Arrowhead is dying. She was found with a cancerous tumor and was even presumed dead the previous year, her apparent disappearance blamed on nearby villagers - though in the end she turned out to still be alive and breathing.

This is her on her last leg: as thin as ever yet still finding the strength to attack crocodiles, a rare prey amongst tigers. She takes after the iconic females of her bloodline and I will surely miss her when she goes with them, the old Ladies of the Lakes.

Another opportunistic kill; with the grass in the Timbavati being as dense as it is, the scrub hare population as blossomed. This abundance of small meals has served the leopard population of Tanda Tula very well this year.

Of all the big cats, leopards have the largest range, spanning 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia. But since leopards have been erased from about two-thirds of their historical range, many populations have become isolated.

Due to their wide range, stealthy nature and ability to survive in many different habitats, it’s challenging to categorize leopards as a single species, according to the IUCN. To help with that, scientists recognize eight subspecies of leopards:

🐆 Amur leopard

🐆 Indochinese leopard

🐆 Sri Lankan leopard

🐆 Indian leopard

🐆 Javan leopard

A subspecies is a is taxonomical rank below species. It’s usually used for populations that are isolated or that look different but that can still interbreed.
