Gonna get a bit personal on here for a sec just cuz i wanted to share some of my recent realizations as a (probably aego) aroace.

So i've been reading and engaging with shippy stuff since forever (especially as a coping mechanism) so ofc that involves explicit romance and smutty content. And it's all nice and fun until i get a new person in my life i feel a sort of bond forming and then BAM! ANXIETY! OVERTHINKING! cuz my first thought (as a recovering people pleaser who has had shippy stories at the front of their mind for ages) is: is this person trying to get closer to me bc they wanna date or fuck me?? Are they crushing on me?? Do they find me attractive?? Would they still wanna be close friends with me even if they knew i was a non-partnering aroace?? And the most terrifying: *would they be able to guilt trip me into overstepping my bounderies just cuz i'm too attached and don't want to loose them??*

It's this constant back and forth between feeling safe and fuzzy engaging with shippy content and creating it, just that general feeling of belonging yk? And trying to remind myself over and over that irl i'm not required to feel that or want that in any capacity and i'm not broken. And that i can be just as happy as the fanfic pookies without being actively in a relationship with someone.

My dear lgbt+ kids,

Having a crush on someone who is "unreachable" is fine.

This includes: a straight person having a crush on a gay person, a gay person having a crush on a straight person, someone having a crush on an aromantic person (who doesn't want to date at all), someone having a crush on a person who is already in a relationship, a teenager having a crush on their teacher, someone having a crush on a celebrity who doesn't even know they exist, someone still having a crush on someone who already rejected them...

If we automatically label these situations as wrong, we skip quite a lot of steps in our heads. Of course, it would be wrong to actively pursue someone who is clearly not interested in you. That's harassment! It's important to take "No" as an answer - as well as to know that some circumstances are an automatic No. This applies for example to the "They are already taken" or "They are an adult and you are not" situation.

But: having a crush  ≠ actually pursuing a relationship with them! Feelings do not equal actions.

Simply having feelings for someone who is clearly not interested - there's nothing morally wrong about that. In fact, I believe that it's actually a very healthy thing to experience, especially for a young person. It can be painful to feel so much and know that it can never lead anywhere. But this knowledge also makes it a pretty safe place: you can explore your romantic feelings, fantasies, and desires without yet having to involve another person. An unrequited crush may hurt sometimes but it also teaches you a lot about yourself!

Vilifying feelings isn't helpful. Nobody is gross or weird or evil or predatory simply for having an unrequited crush.
