i will forcibly romanticize everything i do for the next twelve to sixteen business days, fill my sketchbook like an unknown artist from the 12th century has possessed me, and somehow end those few weeks with nothing but longing for how it was before.
(aka i read if we were villains and the secret history back to back)

Something something Blind!Regulus AU in which Regulus is blinded at five or six because Walburga casts Cruciatus directly at his face and the spell damage is too severe to be fixed.
Sirius and Regulus’ grandfather Arcturus sweeps on scene while Regulus is still in St Mungos because an incident like this is Too Severe to go away with money and threats, and so he takes in both boys because if you’re casting Unforgivables at your children you probably shouldn’t be a parent???
Regulus and Sirius grow up far more well adjusted - though Sirius is still stifled by the world of upper Pureblooded society and Regulus still struggles because of his #trauma - and though Sirius still moves in with the Potters at 16, it’s an amicable split from his family and Regulus is only upset with him for as long as it takes him to pick up on how much easier it is to study without Sirius running shrieking through the corridors.
Regulus gets on reasonably well with the Marauders & Co - especially Remus, and by extension especially Lily - and has a great big Faerie Hound as a guide dog to help him around the school.
Key points:
-A blind Regulus, while still reserved bc that’s the kind of person he is, has never had to learn how to school his expressions, and so he smiles a lot more openly, and makes faces when he’d annoyed, and when he starts Fifth Year and everyone has the revelation that he’s kind of hot, actually, this becomes a Problem.
-He makes endless blind jokes, and then feigns outrage when other people try to make them back. He thinks he’s very funny. Sirius wishes he’d stop.
-Pandora helps him invent a bunch of accessibility spells; ones that turn textbooks into braille, ones that will read text aloud for him. When the Marauders make the map, Remus uses one of hers and Regulus’ charms for the corridor mapping, one that in its original form helped Regulus keep track of where he was in the castle at any one time.
-At every Sorting he plays a game with Barty where Barty will describe an incoming First Year laughably incorrectly - sixteen feet tall, blue hair, fourteen eyes, that sort of thing - and Regulus will guess which House they’re going to be Sorted into. He’s yet to be wrong. It drives Barty crazy.
-All his friends pick up the habit of telling him before they’re going to touch him, and announcing what they’re doing whenever they move around a room, to the point that they all do it when Regulus isn’t there too. When Dorcas and Marlene start dating Dorcas always prefaces reaching for Marlene with ‘I’m going to touch you’ and it never fails to make Marlene go bright pink.
-Lily picks up on the fact that when he teases people and it makes them blush, he’s always delighted when someone tells him; so when they spend time together, whenever he makes her go pink, she holds his hand against her cheek so he can feel the warmth. It never fails to make him ridiculously happy.
-When his friends drag him to Quidditch matches he does running commentary based on what he can hear, which leads to some funny moments like James almost getting hit by a bludger, and the crowd going ‘oooh’, only for Regulus to commentate ‘that sounded like a near miss from a bludger. Sirius Black’s terrible aim strikes again; will he ever hit his mark?’ and twenty feet above him (because Barty cast a sonorous charm on him) Sirius throws his hands in the air in exasperation and almost drops his beaters bat.
(After that match McGonagall bans Barty from amplifying Regulus again; Barty only agrees if Regulus gets to do the official commentary for the third/fourth match at the end of the year.)

Remus, to Regulus: James has an insufferable crush on you, he told me to keep it secret but it’s just so infuriating, and I have to tell someone-
Regulus: I know. He kisses me “as a form of greeting,” but it’s just because he likes me.
