I mean I’m ace too — I did recognise the vibes, but noted they probably weren’t intentional, and that it wouldn’t be made canon, but also that if any character were to be revealed as ace, Gwen would make sense. Even when she was being written as bi, there were a lot of ace vibes, little things, that were far from intentional, but still there, to point that I wasn’t the only person who noticed, and I knew it wasn’t just me. If it were not for those online discussions (I PM’d one of the ‘Love Unlimited’ team to confirm, those many discussions were why Gwen was chosen), Gwen wouldn’t have been the character that arc focused on.
Considering the “Ace vibes” was literally her canon story of being detached from reality because she’s a reader and they’re characters I only can see this as a betrayal of everything she was just so a creative team could rush to claim a character for the label(s).
Exactly what I’d NEVER want done for a character.
So that’s nice but I hate it on every level.

I mean Gwen’s stories beyond the romance-free ‘The Unbelievable GwenPool’ did have a lot of ace vibes to them, albeit completely unintentional by the writer(s) in question — one could find a lot of ace readings of Gwen online before it was made canon, down to her even appearing on (implied) ace character lists on notable-enough websites — one could look up ‘asexual characters’ on Google and Gwen was one of the first options. So Marvel making it canon did not surprise me, although I was not expecting her to be aromantic in addition.
And yet despite reading her books, being Asexual myself and following plenty of comic readers who are similarly so, none of us thought she’d be.
Hell that’s not even getting into the LU team admitting they knew she was being written as Bisexual but decided to rush to say she’s Asexual just because.
It was a shit decision and they should fucking apologize for the audacity alone.

Pitfalls of Being a Marvel Reader Who’s Asexual
Me: Well, I hated them retconning Gwenpool into being AroAce since y’know that wasn’t a thing with her before and just doesn’t make any sense.
Also Me: At least Marvel will eventually reveal Nadia Van Dyne / Wasp is Asexual.
Marvel: It’s true Nadia’s Asexual! Here’s a Gwenpool story revealing it!
Me again: Yeah, I’m used to expecting nothing and still being disappointed and that’s not changing I guess.

It’s just very depressing all around because I just can’t support changing a character when there’s not any evidence of the thing. Let alone a story that invents evidence.
And it especially sucks because the whole upcoming Pride special might finally officially say Nadia is AroAce but if they do it now it’ll just be a Gwenpool aftermath thing. So it’ll effectively taint the character that everyone was really pushing for it because now it’ll be tied to the character no one really expected it of.
Why The Gwenpool Retcon Doesn’t Work
Recently in Marvel’s Love Unlimited Marvel revealed that one Ms. Gwen Poole was Asexual and Aromantic.
Now on one hand, hurrah a canonical aromantic and asexual character!
On the other hand…it genuinely doesn’t make any sense.
The comic does its best trying to squeeze Gwenpool into that square peg but it has to casually try to reformat all her prior experiences in both her original series to do so.
Otherwise ignoring all her prior history and romantic interactions by saying all her interactions were clearly showing her distanced from legitimate romantic connections with characters, which in a way it DOES but only because and here’s the big mega actual textual part of her story
SHE’S A HUMAN FROM OUR WORLD STUCK IN THE COMIC WORLD
(or thinks she is, that’s in the air).
It’s one thing to look for subtext in a series, who doesn’t? But the series’ fatal flaw is otherwise ignoring all the actual text of her character up until this point to try to make it work.
And that’s not even getting into the admission by the creatives behind it that Gwenpool was otherwise chosen at random just because they weren’t allowed to do so with Wasp/Nadia van Dyne.
Gwenpool deserves better than an after thought story by creatives bitter at another character not being available to use. And Aspec representation definitely deserves better than it being randomly thrown on to a character that it makes no sense for.
I say this as someone who’s loved Jeremy Whitley’s work including stuff like Princeless, Raven the Pirate Princess even Unstoppable Wasp…he missed the mark massively.
And I hate to have to say this but I’m sure someone will whine but I’m Asexual myself

Seeeing the Gwenpool Reddit have to make a whole post about not disparaging the Love Unlimited story because so many Gwenpool fans dislike it is great.
Sorry but it sucked. It was genuinely bad and everyone connected to it should he embarrassed and apologize.
Hopefully Marvel or DC make another cool AroAce character to make up for Gwenpool soon

Jeremy Whitley’s big AroAce story in Love Unlimited could’ve been perfect but he had to do it with Gwenpool of all characters.
I haven’t seen a fumble that bad in a while.
Just absolutely annoying.
And she’ll be stuck with this.
Marvels not been able to do anything really great with her since her initial run ended and now they pull this crap.

This was I believe in reference to Magneto’s daughter who had the power to talk to birds/animals in X-Men Apocalypse
Is that “Chat”?
The power similarity is uncanny.
