A Master List of Every Austin Restaurant Opening in Fall 2017
A lavish spread from Be More Pacific, set to make the leap from food truck to brick-and-mortar this fall.
Ah, fall. The air gets a little crisp, the leaves (sort of) start to change, and new restaurants open in a frenzy.
With the inevitable delays, reading the tea leaves of Austin hospitality can be difficult, but we’ve done our best to give you a comprehensive, alphabetical list of Austin restaurants set to open by the end of November. With everything from a new Filipino brick-and-mortar to a downtown food hall around the corner, it’s never too early to start putting on that winter weight.
Anthem, serving Asian fusion like flat bread egg rolls and craft beer, will come to the Millennium Rainey high-rise by the end of fall.
A second location of Austin Daily Press will be opening at 4620 E. Cesar Chavez St. by late fall with an expanded menu that moves from tacos and tortas to tapas.
Be More Pacific, the punny Filipino food truck, is going brick-and-mortar in the former home of Rebel Pizza Bar. By the end of October, expect a full-service experience with a tasting menu for dinner, a casual counter-service lunch, a lavish Sunday brunch, and a full bar. 7858 Shoal Creek Blvd.
Better Half, from the owners of Wright Bros. Brew and Brew, will be bringing light meals, coffee, beer, and a full bar to the 1203 W. Fifth St. space most recently occupied by local ridesharing app Ride Austin.
The Highland area is set to have more dining options with the opening of Brewtorium in the fall. The 6015 Dillard Cir. restaurant will have pub grub like pizza and bratwurst to go with owners Chris Rauschuber and Whitney Roberts’ brews.
Captain Quackenbush’s Coffeehouse and Bakery will try to recapture some of its late ’80s Drag vibes this fall by opening a larger space at 5326 Manchaca Rd., the former home of Strange Brew.
Colleen’s Kitchen in Mueller’s busy Aldrich Street District could be open as early as late fall. The project from Sean and Ashley Fric will bring Southern hospitality to the ‘hood.
Confituras Little Kitchen will have plenty of fresh biscuits, served with preserves from Stephanie McClenny’s essential jams and preserves line. The 2129 Goodrich Ave. space will also act as a culinary incubator for other chefs. Expect to also see their wares in the jewel box shop, opening in early fall.
Cookbook Cafe, the ELM Group concept that will draw its menu from the archives, is shooting to open October with the new Austin Central Library downtown, but can’t confirm yet. The project will include a full bar program, good news for those who prefer their Anna Karenina with a little bit of vodka.
Signs indicate that Cosmic Cafe and Beer at 121 Pickle Rd., the crowdfunded beer garden and food truck court that took over the space that Buzz Mill abandoned, is nearing completion.
Epoch continues its recent expansion by converting an old service station at 3900 Far West Blvd. into a third location (a fourth is planned in Plaza Saltillo). Expect pots to start brewing by mid-October.
The Fairmont Hotel, opening in late fall at 101 Red River St., will be a culinary wonderland of five projects, including wood-fired temple Garrison; food hall Revue (featuring a Italian, Pan-Asian, and a bakeshop concept); the Good Things coffee shop; and two bars, Fulton and Rules & Regs.
Fareground, the downtown food hall managed by ELM Group will feature Dai Due Taquería; Antonelli’s Cheese Shop; Easy Tiger Bake Shop; Ni-Komé sushi and ramen; Henbit and Honeybit, two concepts from Emmer & Rye’s Kevin Fink and Tavel Bristol-Joseph; and Contigo Fareground. The concept is still eyeing a late fall opening at 111 Congress Ave.
Home Slice will expand to a long-awaited second location at 501 E. 53rd St. by the end of fall. The new location will offer the same New York-style pies, plus new menu items and a full bar. Oh, and there’s plenty of parking.
We are looking for updates on Il Brutto, the New Waterloo Italian concept that was first slated to be open by summer at 1617 E. Sixth St.
Intero Ristorante, another entry into the Austin Italian race, will open in the Bud’s motorcycle building on 2612 E. Cesar Chavez St. in October. The project from former Vespaio chef Ian Thurwachter and his wife, Crave Chocolate’s Krystal Craig, will focus on snout-to-tail cooking.
Komé is renovating the Cash America Pawn building at 5301 Airport Blvd. to be their new location, with an October goal. The expanded dining room will have much the same menu, but the drinks will be revamped with the coming of a new liquor license.
Local, a new Austin location of a popular San Antonio coffee shop, will open in the Seaholm in early November, bringing with it pastries and desserts from Bakery Lorraine.
Houston import Peli Peli is taking over the shuttered Cantina Laredo space at 201 W. Third St. by the end of the year. Those who can’t wait for the restaurant’s South African fare can get a preview at this weekend’s ACL Festival.
Polvos, the long-running Tex-Mex joint, is taking over the old Prelog’s space in the 360 Tower for its third location. Although a sign is up, there’s no word on the exact opening date.
Casual East Austin eatery Revelry Kitchen & Bar (not to be confused with the Revelry event space that also hosts culinary happenings) will be opening a north location at 6215 N. Lamar Blvd. by late fall.
Green greens purveyor Snappy Salads is opening the first Austin location at 701 South Capital of Texas Highway any day now.
Soto, or at least something Soto-ish will be opening in Lamar Union any day now. Although the restaurant will not share the name of the Cedar Park original, some of that restaurant’s favorites will be making their way to the new menu.
Suerte, from former Odd Duck chef Sam Hellman-Mass, will draw inspiration from traditional Mexican cooking techniques. The 1800 E. Sixth St. location should be open for business in late fall.
TLC, a new comfort food concept from the owners of J. Blacks, will open in the possibly cursed Lamar Union development by the end of October.
After a long series of pop-up dinners, El Chile Group’s (El Chile, El Chilito, Alcomar, El Alma, and the recently-shuttered El Sapo) Peruvian restaurant and pisco bar Yuyo should open … sometime. A location has yet to be announced for the long-awaited concept.

Turmoil on Madison Avenue as Marketers Push for Change
The world’s biggest marketers are taking aggressive steps to change how they buy ads, triggering upheaval across the advertising industry.
Consumer products giant Procter & Gamble Co. PG 0.23% said Thursday that it slashed spending on digital advertising by more than $200 million last year, after a recent push for more transparency had revealed such spending to be largely wasteful.
The cut is a sliver of P&G’s overall annual ad spending, which was $7.1 billion in the fiscal year that ended in July, but it represents an important shift after years of marketers raising digital ad spending almost reflexively.
Meanwhile, WPP WPP -8.38% PLC, the world’s largest ad agency company, on Thursday logged its worst performance since the financial crisis, posting a decline in net sales for the year and projecting no growth in 2018. Among the reasons: Big clients like P&G and Unilever PLC have been stepping up their campaigns to cut ad agency costs.
The developments highlight the fallout as marketers reassess their relationships with ad agencies and big tech companies like Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL -2.94% Google in an increasingly complex media environment.
WPP shares tumbled 8.2% in London, and the news affected rivals including Publicis Groupe SA, PUBGY -2.91% which fell 3.4% in Paris.
Marketers aren’t cutting their ad spending overall. Global ad spending is projected to rise 4.3% this year, according to GroupM. But, as they contend with pressures on their businesses, marketers are focusing on how to rein in costs paid to agencies, limit the number of agencies they work with, and make ad spending more efficient. They are also bringing in-house some creative and ad-buying functions once handled by agencies.
“It’s time to disrupt this archaic ‘Mad Men’ model,’” P&G Chief Brand Officer Marc Pritchard said Thursday at an ad industry event.
Mr. Pritchard has been pushing digital giants including Google and Facebook to improve safeguards to keep ads from appearing around controversial content, and to allow independent verification of the data they release on the reach of ad campaigns.
He said the companies have done much of what he asked, including providing better metrics. But in part thanks to the enhanced measurement data and transparency, P&G realized some people were seeing the same ads far too many times, and that the average view time for a mobile ad in a platform like Facebook was only 1.7 seconds.
“Once we got transparency, it illuminated what reality was,” said Mr. Pritchard. P&G then took matters into its owns hands and voted with its dollars, he said.
Related
P&G, whose brands include Tide, Pampers and Crest, has said that it is looking to cut an additional $400 million over three years in agency and production costs, having already saved around a combined $750 million in recent years.
Mr. Pritchard didn’t specify which digital companies P&G had reduced spending with, but one of the biggest reductions was with Google’s YouTube. P&G suspended advertising on the popular online video service a year ago after ads appeared alongside objectionable videos.
YouTube has added more human reviewers and given marketers more control over where ads appear, while Facebook’s recent newsfeed algorithm changes helped address concerns over the quality of content, including news, on its platform.
“P&G is a great partner to Facebook,” Facebook said in a statement. “We’re proud of the work we’ve done together, particularly in the areas of third-party verification and brand safety.”
Google declined to comment.
P&G said it hasn’t reduced its overall spending, but has shifted those digital dollars into other areas.
For their part, big ad agency companies that have traditionally bought advertising space on behalf of marketing clients are under pressure to reinvent themselves to remain relevant as the industry changes. Advertisers are demanding that their agency partners be more transparent about media-buying, so it is clear that agencies are getting the best possible deal for the clients and aren’t receiving rebates from sellers.
Advertisers also want agency-holding companies like WPP to streamline their complicated organizations—alphabet soups of agencies that were assembled through years of acquisitions. Mr. Pritchard called for companies to combine their creative and media operations to foster better collaboration.
The ad giants haven’t made that bold of a move yet, but are working to come up with ways for clients to work with advertising staff that was previously siloed.
“We have to alter our model,” WPP Chairman and Chief Executive Martin Sorrell said in an interview.
“We’re clear on the destination,” he added. “The changes that are taking place are pushing us to do it faster.”
This year alone, WPP has announced the merger of its public-relations firms Burson-Marsteller and Cohn & Wolfe and said that it would consolidate five of its branding agencies into one. In 2017, it combined its media agencies Maxus and MEC to form Wavemaker; moved its digital agency Possible into its customer-relationship marketing business Wunderman; and created WPP Health & Wellness out of its four large health-care agencies.
WPP executives often refer to this approach as “horizontality,” while rival Publicis is trying to unite its operations in a restructuring dubbed “The Power of One.” Omnicom Group Inc. OMC -1.81% has also been pushing to simplify areas like customer relationship management, national brand advertising and public relations.
WPP’s results Thursday showed that the changes so far haven’t been enough to counter the industry’s headwinds. Investors expected sales to be broadly flat after the company had cut its forecast three times, so they were spooked by the year-over-year decline. The firm also said it is setting budgets for 2018 on the assumption of no growth in revenue and net sales.
In the fourth quarter, organic net sales were down 3.4% in North America, 2.6% in Western Continental Europe and 3% in Asia Pacific. The bright spot was the U.K., which rose 9.1%.
“2017 for us was not a pretty year,” Mr. Sorrell said.

U.K. Looks at Glaxo’s Use of Third Parties in Bribery Probe
A GlaxoSmithKline building in London is shown in 2013.
“In the course of its ongoing inquiry, the SFO has requested additional information from the group regarding third-party advisers engaged by the company,” Glaxo said Wednesday in a securities filing. The company said it informed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice of the SFO’s inquiry, and is “responding to their requests for additional information.”
Glaxo in September 2016 agreed to pay the SEC $20 million to settle civil charges it violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, an anti-bribery law, when its Chinese units paid health-care professionals to prescribe its drugs. Glaxo didn’t admit or deny wrongdoing but agreed to provide the SEC with updates for two years on its efforts to improve its compliance systems, the SEC said.
Also in 2016, the Justice Department concluded an investigation of its own and said it would take no further action, a Glaxo spokeswoman said via email on Wednesday.
The SEC and Justice Department declined to comment. The SFO didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment after U.K. business hours.
Glaxo said it couldn’t estimate the potential financial effect of the issue and hadn’t made any provision for them in its accounts.

Austin Chamber Publicly Supports $1.1 Billion School District Bond
Austin school district documents obtained by the American-Statesman indicate the district could close four underenrolled campuses under the bond proposal: Brooke, Metz, Norman and Sanchez (pictured) elementary schools. 2011 Jay Janner/AMERICAN-STATESMAN
The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce on Thursday endorsed the Austin school district’s $1.1 billion bond proposition that will go before voters in November.
“The success of Austin ISD is intrinsically linked with the success of Austin,” chamber board Chairwoman Ellen Wood said. “Quality public education is a crucial tool in recruiting employers to the region. This bond will help keep the Central Texas region competitive in an increasingly demanding marketplace.”
The endorsement was considered a win among supporters of the bond, the largest attempted in the school district’s history.
Trustee Cindy Anderson said having the chamber’s support is a nod to the district that it is educating students with the skills necessary to meet the workforce’s needs.
“I do feel like it’s a big vote of confidence,” Anderson said.
The Austin school board decided to place the bond on the ballot as a single proposition, a departure from previous bond elections.
But after the failure of half of the district’s $892 million bond package in 2013, which was broken into four propositions, district officials decided not to hedge their bets on this one.
More recently, Round Rock voters shot down all three school propositions in that district’s $572 million bond package.
Despite the large sum, such bonds in other districts, such as Dallas and Houston, have succeeded.
The Austin district also said the bond’s passage wouldn’t increase the tax rate. Austin district officials said that for this bond package, they could layer the debt over time in such a way that the tax rate wouldn’t increase.
Wood, during Thursday’s announcement, said the chamber’s board of directors gathered financial experts who crunched the numbers, using conservative projections, and concluded there is a “very high probability” that the bond won’t raise the school tax rate.
However, the bond plan includes the possibility of closing or consolidating schools, which has drawn criticism from some in the community. Trustees haven’t discussed the closure of specific schools publicly, only showing a line item on bond package documents that unspecified land sales would lower the cost of the bond package by $40 million. But documents obtained by the American-Statesman indicate four underenrolled schools could be shuttered: Brooke, Metz, Norman and Sanchez elementaries.
The possible closure of the East Austin schools prompted some community members to announce they are forming their own political action committee, Save East Austin Schools.
Monica Sanchez, who made an unsuccessful bid for school board three years ago, is co-founder of the political action committee. She said the group will oppose the bond unless the school board amends the facilities master plan to “equitably redistribute resources to East Austin schools.”
“The bond process was and is critically flawed,” Sanchez said. “The bond, if passed with the current Facilities Master Plan, would continue Austin ISD’s and city of Austin’s long history of institutional racism. We call on all Austinites to participate in creating more equitable and integrated solutions for the benefit of all Austin public school children.”
In a letter, obtained by the Statesman under the Public Information Act, an Austin district trustee last month mentioned possible school consolidations to state House Public Education Chairman Dan Huberty, R-Houston.
Because she couldn’t attend a legislative hearing, Trustee Julie Cowan asks Huberty in the letter to consider the additional facilities funding for districts in House Bill 21. Cowan said if the bond passes, the district plans to rebuild or modernize 16 schools, but adds that the rising costs of living in Austin has driven families to neighboring districts, which will prompt the school district to close schools. Ultimately, the Austin district didn’t get any additional money from HB 21.
“We will be consolidating many of our underenrolled schools, which is financially prudent, but emotionally difficult for many communities,” Cowan said.

Austin Mayor to Address Plan for Downtown Homelessness
AUSTIN, Texas — As the city of Austin continues to grow, so does its homeless population, with many of those in need concentrated downtown.
At a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, Mayor Steve Adler and several community leaders will unveil the city’s plan to help house those who are dealing with homelessness, and to relieve overcrowding at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless.
Adler has been an advocate for addressing the homeless population that is part of what he calls the “downtown puzzle.” Last December, he sent a letter to his colleagues on the city council outlining his main objectives for 2017, with ‘downtown homeless and the ARCH’ listed as the second item.
In the letter, Adler stated:
“My understanding is that best practices indicate a continuing need for the ARCH to be the downtown shelter. Rightsizing the ARCH and housing the homeless is also just the right thing to do for some of the most vulnerable among us.”
The area surrounding the homeless shelter remains a constant safety concern, but that wasn’t enough to deter one developer. There will soon be a high-rise multi-use project right next door to the ARCH in what is currently a pay-to-park parking lot.
The property, known as “Block 87,” is privately owned by the Episcopal Church and is bordered by Seventh, Eighth, Trinity and Neches Streets.
Conceptual renderings from Cielo Property Group , an Austin-based company, show what the project could look like once it’s finished.
The large mixed-use proposal would also offer a permanent home for the church’s archives. There is no official construction date for the project, but developers hope to break ground sometime next year.

Houston Lender Arranges $123.2M Refinancing For Austin’s Iconic Frost Bank Tower
AUSTIN, TX — Houston-based Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P. officials on Wednesday said they have arranged a $123.2 million refinancing for Frost Bank Tower, the iconic, Class AA office tower in downtown Austin.
In a press release, officials said HFF worked on behalf of the borrower, Lionstone Investments, a data-analytics driven real estate investment firm, to secure the seven-year, floating-rate loan through New York Life Insurance Company.
Completed in 2003 and designed by Duda/Paine Architects, Frost Bank Tower consists of 33 stories of office and ground floor retail space totaling 535,924 rentable square feet, officials said. On-site amenities include a 5,500-square-foot fitness club with shower facilities, a 2,800-square-foot conference facility, full-service bank branch and dry cleaning services, according to the company. The property is 96 percent leased to national, regional and local tenants with Graves Dougherty Hearon & Moody, and Frost National Bank, anchoring the property, officials noted.
Retail tenants include Soul Cycle, Taco Shack, Juiceland, Houndstooth Coffee and Modern Market. Frost Bank Tower occupies an entire city block at 401 Congress Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets in Austin’s central business district.
The HFF debt placement team representing the borrower was led by managing director Colby Mueck and senior managing director Doug Opalka, company officials said.
“Frost Bank Tower is the most iconic trophy office tower in Austin’s CBD, which is one of the most dynamic markets in the country,” Opalka said. “When you look at the most desirable office addresses in the United States, Congress Avenue in Austin is always amongst a very elite peer set, and that is always led by Frost Tower.”
Mueck added: “This transaction is a rare combination of exceptional real estate, an outstanding market, top tier institutional ownership, and one of the perennial leaders in the lending world.”

How To Find An Apartment In Austin
Austin, Texas is a popular place to live and it was recently voted the best city to live in the United States. This means that if you are looking for an apartment, you might be competing with other people who are also apartment hunting. It helps to have a plan when you are searching for your first apartment. Read on to learn some tips that can help you find the apartment of your dreams in Austin.
Before you even start looking for apartments, you should sit down and make a list of the features that are important to you. Write down anything and everything you want, without worrying about how much everything is going to cost. When you have your list written down, you can divide your list into things that you have to have, things that would be nice to have, and things you want to have if money is no issue.
Next, you are going to need to set your budget so you know exactly how much money you have to work with. It doesn’t make sense looking at apartments that are out of your price range. Your apartment budget should be something that you can easily afford. You don’t want to have to stretch to make your rent payments because you will have to be worried about money all the time, and you don’t want that.
Make sure the neighborhood you want to live in is a location that you like. You can see where the apartment is on a map and explore the community to see what is close to your apartment, like grocery stores and places to eat. You can do your initial apartment research online and start looking for units that you like. Once you have a few apartments that you are interested in looking at, you can start making appointments to see them.
Don’t jump at the first apartment you see. Make sure you look at three or four apartments before you apply for one. Your credit score should be decent and you don’t want any evictions on your record or you won’t be able to get approved for the apartment. You might need to get a roommate or have someone co-sign the lease for you. Austin has a hot rental market, but with the right planning, you can find an apartment that you are going to love.
