We are on the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR in Fredericksburg, VA Oct. 26, 1974. The Acca Local has arrived to leave fresh GP40 No. 126 for the Fredericksburg yard job. The local crew will be taking GP35 No. 138 back to Richmond. The Acca Local, officially known as the Acca-Dahlgren Junction Turnaround Local No. 3, was a Monday thru Saturday job. During the week, it seldom made it to Fredericksburg, usually turning back south at Milford. On Saturday, it ran to Fredericksburg to make the power swap and pick up any Acca cars. Note that GP35 No. 138 is backwards. The yard job always wanted a unit pointed south and would turn an even numbered unit on the wye. When the Acca Local got back to Acca, you can assure yourself that No. 138 took a spin on Acca wye to get it properly pointed.

Meet at the Diamond
While waiting in Deshler, Ohio, for the sun to drop, and perhaps a train on the Toledo Subdivision to light up the CPL signals, two trains on the Chicago line met nearly over the diamond.

Rockford, Illinois (Part Three)
We're in Rockford, Illinois, on the Iowa line of the Illinois Central (Gulf) Railroad. The first shot here was taken on the west side of the Rock River, at Corbin Street; that's an eastbound train. The second and third shots show a meet of that train with a westbound at Buckbee Siding on the other side of the river, at 8th Street.
You might notice some numbers on the signal post: these indicate that we’re 85 miles west of Chicago. Also, there’s a switcher in the consist, but probably not running, as I think it’s to be delivered to the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway down the line a piece.

Rockford, Illinois (Part Two)
This is a northbound movement on the Milwaukee Road in Rockford, Illinois. We first see the train at Buckbee Street where it will soon cross the Illinois Central. That lead unit, 89C, was built for the Milwaukee in 1949.
The next two shots come from Cedar Street: the train has since crossed over the Rock River and is ducking under the Chicago & North Western, the bridge visible in the second shot. In the going away image, it is entering what was previously a small yard.
One might not think of northern Illinois as being part of the Rust Belt, but looking at a USGS map of this era, one sees just how busy this place must have been back in the day. In addition the roads mentioned above, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy seems to have had a branch line here.

Southbound at TY
A southbound freight on the Illinois Central mainline rolls through Tuscola, Illinois. The IC crossed both the B&O and MoPac (C&EI) at this spot; the tower is just behind the photographer.
