Journey to Babel happening after Amok time is so incredibly funny because in that episode Jim learned that Vulcans have a heat cycle and his first officer has to fuck right now or he'll die. Met Spocks WIFE and also learned that T'Pau the most influential person on Vulcan is related to Spock, got into a messy three way divorce arc between T'Pring, Stonn and Spock, then having to literally fight Spock to the death and DIED. And yet after all of that extremly personal drama Jim witnessed Spock still didn't tell Jim who the fuck his parents are. Like the man is insane, your best friend and captain saved you from a fuck or die situation, got you out of a loveless marriage, literally died for you and you still won't introduce him to your mom and dad.

every week, I spend more and more time wondering how people who came into TMAGP cold (because they were told they could) are processing the recognition gasp rollercoaster that is the alchemist AU

maybe a silly question. but one of my favorite aspects in house of usher is that when they are spiraling towards their own demise, the lighting in the environment of their death gradually becomes brighter and colored in the color associated with the specific character who's dying. could you explain me how this effect was achieved? was it vfx or was it actually happening during shooting? can't help but imagine that the last case would be something so cool and inspiring to all the actors involved.

It was all done on set - we designed the lightning to change throughout each of those sequences in favor of our chosen character color. It got pretty surreal at times (especially with Tamerlane's greens in episode 6, which was my favorite deployment of this idea.) Michael Fimognari (the DP) would also go out of his way to include a light source of a different color in the shots, not only to help the saturated chosen color feel more intense (and not lose its impact), but to make it clear that this was happening on set and in the environment, and not a post-production color overlay or digital effect.

For example, when we did the club sequence in episode 2, we were using blue and gold lights to paint the crowd, but would pepper in the occasional red (Perry's character color) as Verna entered the scene. As Perry's death became more imminent and Verna began to move through the crowd, we would phase out the blue and gold in favor of more and more saturated reds, but use sprinkles of the other colors to the very end so that that we didn't go "red-blind". When Verna and Perry talk privately, you can see that we left several lamps on so that their white and yellow light would prove it wasn't a wash or an overlay, and we'd gradually increase the brightness and saturation of our red lights. The effect was hypnotic and surreal on set. Very glad you enjoyed it and thanks for noticing!
