stuff i find myself sometimes, mostly reblogs about vulture culture
if you don't want to see dead animals or parts of them, this blog isn't for you!
he/him
recent unfortunate finds, two separate baby rats. outdoor cats suck :/ but the video, he must've been there for a few hours cos that beetle was eating his tongue
free wood pigeon :) lucky for me he ended up in the bike lane and not a foot to the left over the paint line marking for the cars. otherwise for sure it would've been flattened immediately
I want to show you the process I took the past few days to process this hedgehog, it was great to finally be able to work on it I was very curious to know what it would be like
A friend gave it to me, the same one who gave me a skinned coachwhip snake and a chinchilla puppy
First I have to say that I didn't have gloves as I forgot to buy them and I didn't want to get my hands on this one like I usually would, I don't know salmonella and spikes, so in the whole process I only used metal serrated tweezers and the scalpel
I started by cutting the skin between the lips and gums peeling back, with an incision through the chin through the neck down the chest and abdomen and finally through the arms and legs.
In the end after pushing and cutting here and there the skin finally gave way
I froze the skin since it had a lot of attached tissue and I was already a bit annoyed with the length of the process so I didn't want to work on it now
Then, of course, the only thing left to do was extract the organs, from which I extracted and preserved the testicles, the kidneys and the heart, the latter for a project that I have in hand
Here I had finally finished removing everything I didn't want with my dermestid, organs, abdominal wall, fat and after giving it a good bath to remove blood and fur that adhered to the meat
And in the end, that's how it ended, from being a fresh and shiny carcass to this skinless mummy after spending a night in the constant wind of a fan that I use to dry specimens
It will go directly to the dermestary and hopefully there will be good results, as usual
Despite the length of the process it was very pleasant to work with this odd animal... ye they are so weird
the rest of the bones are soaking now but also here's the current state of the paws and nose of Fig (name of possum found on tracks near-completely mummified and since I was visiting friends they gave me one of their jars to transport which was labeled 'fig' with a date for the last thing that was in there). Still a work in progress but I'm glad I have some amazing parts from her instead of them being dumped on rails forever 🥰
