5/16 Roundup: Baseball advances to state semifinals
Baseball drops Westover Christian 11-1 in VISAA Quarterfinals
Tumblr media
Christian Carter’s three-run home run gave the Trojans the lead for good
Varsity Baseball took care of business in the first round of the VISAA Division III State Tournament, defeating #8 seed Westover Christian Academy 11-1 in five innings. The Trojans (14-9) were strong in all facets of the game, showing why they earned the #1 seed in this year’s tournament. With the win, Walsingham advances to the semifinals to face #4 seed Fuqua School on Thursday, May 18 at 4:30 PM at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, VA. The victor will meet the winner of the #2 Southampton Academy/#3 Carlisle semifinal in the championship game on Saturday, May 20 at Shepherd Stadium. The Trojans are now just one win away from tying the school record with 15 wins, which was set by last year’s team, and two wins away from the first major championship in program history.
Walsingham would be ultra aggressive on the base path all day, and the strategy paid early dividends. After Tredell Blow (’19) lined a single to left in the first inning, he immediately stole second base to get into scoring position. After Zach Stanko (’19) worked a walk to put two runners on, both Blow and Stanko executed a double steal to put runners on second and third base with one out. Christian Carter (’19) converted, driving home the first run on a sacrifice fly to right to put the Trojans ahead 1-0.
The Bulldogs kept the game tight, and after a few defensive miscues by Walsingham, Westover Christian was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning off a two-out double off the center field wall. The Trojans responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, as Christian Carter hit a towering three-run home run -- his second of the season -- over the right center field fence to kick the Trojan offense into high gear. Walsingham was able to add two more runs in the frame on an RBI single by Jacob Miller-Bopp (’21) and a fly ball off the bat of Eddie Kinney (’17) that brought home Jack Estep (’18). At the end of the third inning, the Trojans were ahead 6-1.
That lead would prove to be more than enough, as starting pitcher Jacob Miller-Bopp was terrific on the mound. Now working with a lead, Miller-Bopp held the Bulldogs scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. Walsingham’s offense closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth, sending eight batters to the pate and ending the game by mercy rule off an RBI double off the right field fence by Zach Stanko to seal the 11-1 win.
Miller-Bopp finished with a complete game and allowing just one unearned run off three hits to improve to 3-0 on the year. Christan Carter finished with a team-high 4 RBIs, and Jacob Miller-Bopp and Zach Stanko both went 2-3 at the plate. As a team, the Trojans finished 15-15 on stolen base attempts, led by Tredell Blow and Jack Estep with four apiece.

5/1 Roundup: Baseball wins in 9 innings; Golf records season-low score
Baseball edges Portsmouth Christian 3-2 in 9 innings
Tumblr media
Tanner Schobel doubled home the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.
It took a season-long nine innings, but Varsity Baseball emerged with a 3-2 victory on the road against Portsmouth Christian to push their record to 12-7. The Trojans are now winners of three straight and are now beyond halfway through their longest stretch of the season: five games on five consecutive school nights, including three on the road.
Box Score (GameChanger)
The Trojans received an excellent performance from starting pitcher Zach Stanko ('19), who allowed just two runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. The two runs came in 4th to give Portsmouth a 2-0 lead, which the Trojans promptly erased in the 5th, as an RBI single from Tanner Schobel ('20) and a run scored by Luke Pitchford (’17) on a wild pitch tied the game at 2-2.
From there, the pitching staffs would hold the offenses in check. The Trojans rode Stanko into the 7th inning before turning the ball over to Schobel to escape a two on, one out jam. Schobel allowed the first batter to single to load the bases before striking out the next hitter and inducing a groundout to close the inning. Tredell Blow ('19) took the mound in the 8th inning, stranding a runner at third base to send the game to the 9th.
After the first two Trojan batters struck out, Jack Estep (’18) drew a walk and Tanner Schobel followed with a line drive double to right field, allowing a hustling Estep to score from first and giving the Trojans a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Portsmouth Christian would get the tying run as far as second base, before Blow induced a fly out to left fielder Estep to seal the game and earn the win.
The Trojans hit the road again today, as they travel to Peninsula Catholic for their penultimate conference game of the season; first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 PM. Walsingham finishes its regular season on Wednesday against NSA, as the game scheduled against Gloucester for Thursday has been cancelled.
News & Notes
Varsity Baseball received good news in the VISAA State polls, jumping from #3 to #1 in the May 1 edition on the heels of defeating previous #1 Southampton last Friday. This marks the first time in program history that the team has been ranked first overall. The state committee’s final poll will be released on Wednesday, May 10. The Trojans are now all but assured to host a state tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday, May 16.
Varsity Golf was defeated by Summit Christian 183-206 on Monday, but the 206 strokes represent the lowest score of the season for the ever-improving Trojans. Golf concludes its regular season today against NSA.
Varsity Girls Soccer fell to NSA at home 8-0 on Monday. The Trojans wrap their regular season today on the road against Peninsula Catholic, needing a win to qualify for the TCIS Tournament.

Baseball beats HRA 9-3
Tumblr media
Zack Stanko accounted for four RBIs in the victory.
Walsingham Baseball picked up its first TCIS win of the year by defeating rival HRA by the score 9-3 of March 30. With the win, the Trojans improve to 4-2 (1-1 TCIS) on the season.
HRA scored the first run of the game to go up 1-0 in the top of the second after capitalizing on a couple of defensive miscues by the Trojans. The Trojans offense showed its first sign of life in the bottom of the third as they were able to plate a couple of runs without the benefit of a hit thanks to walks by Tanner Schobel (’20) and Tredell Blow (’19) and some good aggressive base running.
The Trojans took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth before finally breaking the game open. After two groundouts to start the frame, the next six Trojans reached base including big RBI singles by Luke Pitchford (’17) and Zach Stanko (’19). When the Navigators finally escaped the inning, the Trojans had a commanding 6-1 lead, which would grow to 7-1 after a pinch hit RBI single by Zack Tomek (’18) in the bottom of the fifth. HRA was not quite ready to throw in the towel, starting the sixth with a triple, a double, and a single to cut the lead to 7-3 with no outs. However, Walsingham pitcher Jason Covaney (’18) shut down the rally by retiring the next three batters.
Walsingham added a little insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Zach Stanko picked up his third and fourth RBIs of the game with a two-run single to give the Trojans a 9-3 lead. Lincoln Lubsen (’21) made his varsity pitching debut in the seventh inning, striking out 2 hitters to close out the win.
Jason Covaney pitched six innings while allowing just two earned runs and moved to 2-1 on the year. Christian Carter (’19), James West (’17), and Eddie Kinney (’17) also had hits for the Trojans.

Baseball grabs big state win over Southampton
Tumblr media
Zack Stanko helped turn a pivotal double play in the fourth inning.
Varsity Baseball played host to Southampton Academy on March 27 in the two schools’ first meeting since Southampton defeated the Trojans in the 2015 VISAA Division III Championship. Walsingham was able to gain a small measure of revenge, registering a one-run victory of their own as they held on for a 5-4 win. The Trojans are now 3-2 on the season and will next be in action on Thursday, March 30 as they host TCIS rival Hampton Roads Academy at 4:00 PM.
The Trojans struck first in the game as Tanner Schobel (’20) was able to score from second on a misplayed ground ball in the bottom of the first off the bat of Christian Carter (’19). The Raiders bounced back with a run of their own in the top of the third inning on ground ball double play turned by WA’s shortstop Tredell Blow (’19), which tied the game at 1-1. However, the Trojans regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Lincoln Lubsen (’21) brought in the go-ahead run by working a bases loaded walk and then Zack Tomek (’18) drove in two more runs with a clutch two-out single to give the Trojans a 4-1 lead.
Walsingham starting pitcher Tanner Schobel really hit his groove after being spotted with a three-run lead as he held the Raiders scoreless in the 4th and 5th innings, with a little help on a great double play turned by third baseman Zach Stanko (’19) in the 4th inning. With runners on second and third base, Stanko fielded a sharp ground ball and tagged the lead runner before he could retreat to the bag. His throw to first base pulled Christian Carter off the bag, but Carter was able to return the ball back to Stanko and catch the runner originally on second base trying to advance to third.
After Schobel retired the first two batters in the sixth inning, the Raiders mounted a strong rally and were able to tie the game at 4-4 on back-to-back-to-back two-out hits. That rally ended the day on the mound for Schobel as the Trojans called Tredell Blow in from the bullpen. Blow closed the door in the 6th by getting a ground out to shortstop with runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Still tied in the bottom of the 6th, Jacob Miller-Bopp (’21) and Schobel both worked walks to start the inning. After the next two hitters failed to advance the runners, Christian Carter came through with the two-out, go-ahead single to give the Trojans the 5-4 lead. Tredell Blow came back out for the 7th inning and was able to force a bases loaded ground out to end the game, securing his first win of the season.
