💙 The Intervening Years
by rosemu (@roserocksrapidly)
G, 11k, Lan Sizhui & Wangxian
Summary: Wen Yuan grows up into Lan Sizhui and Xian-gege is there for every step of the way. Kay's comments: Writing this rec with literal tears in my eyes. It was really, really good, but it also pulls a mean punch. In this story, Lan Sizhui keeps his memories of his time in the Burial Mounds, which is already gut-wrenching enough, but he also grows up with his Xian-gege, who lives in the Gentian House and isn't well-liked by the Lan Clan, but always looks after his little radish. I don't want to say too much, but prepare for major sads. Really loved the way Sizhui connected with Jingyi in this story. Excerpt: After his lessons, Zewu-jun walks Lan Yuan to the Jingshi. This is his absolute favorite time of the day. Some days, Father is able to sit up and some he is completely bed-bound, but he always listens attentively as Lan Yuan excitedly tells him about his day. If he ever thinks Father’s reactions are subdued, Xian-gege is always there to balance him out with large grins and teasing remarks. On really good days, sometimes they even go out back behind the Jingshi and play with the rabbits. Father piles bunnies on top of him and Xian-gege laughs and laughs, saying “Lan Zhan, you’re just as bad as me, burying our little radish like this!” Father just smiles and adds another rabbit to the pile. Those are Lan Yuan’s favorite days. Eventually, Lan Yuan has to leave and go back to the loneliness of the disciples’ quarters once again. Father hugs him gently and Xian-gege kisses him on the head in goodbye. Then, Lan Yuan goes to sleep and wakes up the next day to do it all over again.

Vinegar Dreams
by chiyukimei (@chiyukimei)
E, 4k, Wei Wuxian/Wen Qing
Summary: Everything had started when Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning returned from Jin Ling’s one month celebration with their heads low. Few months after their close-off from the cultivation world, here laid Wen Qing with Wei Wuxian naked laying on top of her, sleeping peacefully on her shoulder’s crook. How did they reach this point was a whole another story. Kay's comments: Something a little (a lot) different from my usual recs, since I am a Wangxian-shipper 99% of the time, but sometimes... Sometimes... I crave Wei Wuxian/Wen Qing too, especially that good Burial Mounds found family flavour. Here they get together after they found the Yiling Wei Sect and it's really sweet, especially the found family vibes of it all, but also, the smell of vinegar is strong. I tagged ambiguous/open ending because the author couldn't bring themselves to completely go against Wangxian and that was neat too :D Excerpt: Seeing Wei Wuxian’s shocked face, she said, “When you said family, I thought, I thought…I…Wei Wuxian…let’s forget it if you don’t…let’s forget it!” Wen Qing was a proud woman ever since the beginning. It wasn’t a normal thing for her to stammer, let alone have that mad expression. If she looked and spoke like that then she should’ve loved for real. If she loved someone, then that meant she trusted that person with her entire being and she would do anything to protect them. Wen Qing began to leave, then suddenly Wei Wuxian grabbed her arm. “I wasn’t joking.” He said. Wen Qing, “…What…?” “I wasn’t joking when I said we’ve started a family. Even if I did, don’t you know every joke has a bit of truth in it?”

G, 2k, Songxiao
Summary: In the aftermath of Wen Ruohan’s trial, Song Lan put in a request for a two-month leave from work and took Xiao Xingchen down to Chongqing for the summer. “I’m still recovering,” he said, when Xingchen made worried noises about Song Lan having been away from the office for a total of four months out of that year. “Don’t worry, Xingchen. What with the trials still going on, I’ll be surprised if Wangji makes it back to Tianyun before Christmas.” So they packed their bags and went to Chongqing, armed with a list of things to do and see while they were there. Or: Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen, and an impromptu honeymoon.

Why Not Me?
by Eleanor_Fenyx (@eleanorfenyx)
G, 26k, Lan Jingyi
Summary: Lan Jingyi knows that he's a Lan by blood. He wears the Lan family headband, with its special embroidery and everything. He's a disciple like everyone else, even though he's not so good at sitting through his classes, and he's racked up more punishments than anyone else in his age group twice over already. He's trying, so why is it none of his family want to raise him? Maybe they don't know he's here, in the children's home. Maybe they just need to learn who he is and they'll take in their orphaned cousin with open arms. If he could only learn to behave and earn their approval then he'd be set with a new family to take over for the parents he doesn't really remember, but why is behaving so hard?! Mojo's comments: Oh, I LOVE me some lonely, unloved Jingyi stories, and this one delivers. I think I might have cried for the whole first chapter, because poor misfit BABY! He's just so full of feelings that he splits at the seams and they all come jumbled and spilling out. But that's good, because it turns out there are people who will actually LISTEN to him. And then it turns out that there are people who will love him, too.

Hi, I love your blog and have found so many gems through it! Thanks so much for the good work!
May I request you to rec a work of mine through the "Proud Authors Spotlight"? This is a sex-cursed WangXian fic written for the Close Quarters Exchange, in which WWX hides from the cultivation conference in the Jinlintai library after getting a sex curse, where he runs into LWJ. There's a bit of dubcon due to the sex curse, but it all turns out well for WangXian. Less smut, much angst and pining, and a canon-divergence with a happy ending. Thanks so much in advance!
Bearing that jasmine-scented night unfading in my heart
by jiah (@jianghuseparatist)
M, 22k, Wangxian
Part of the Close Quarters Exchange
Summary: Take her, whispers the amulet. The curse whips through him then, and he bites off a whimper before it can form. Take her, it sings through his blood. Look at her, she’s practically inviting you to take her, with her wide eyes and soft lips and softer body. Think of how blissful it will be to let go of this strain and sink into her softness like a sharp tooth into the supple, unbroken flesh of a grape. Wei Wuxian will die rather than give in to the curse. But before that, he’ll use what remains of his mind to do what he does best — research this curse and find a way to break it. As luck would have it, he’s stumbled into the one room in Jinlintai that nobody is likely to enter tonight — the library.

E, Series, WIP, 184k, Wangxian
Summary: A night-hunt goes wrong, and Wei Wuxian is scapegoated for the death of the Jiang Sect Leader and the destroyed core of the Jiang Sect Heir. As punishment, his core is taken and given to Jiang Cheng, and he is stripped of his cultivation credentials and expelled from the sect. What everyone forgot was that Wei Wuxian was wearing the standard issue body camera that each cultivator wore on training missions and high-risk night-hunts. Struggling to make ends meet, Wei Wuxian finds his way to Caiyi Town with the doctor who performed the surgery, a partial core still secretly in place. His application to work at Cloud Recesses is summarily rejected by the hard-edged Second Jade of Lan after an unfortunate initial encounter. But things change when someone hacks into the Jiang systems and releases the footage of what happened. Kay's comments: The series is still a WIP, but the main story is complete! I am so weak for Kizu's modern AUs with cultivation, they are great. Especially the world building and how the cultivation society might function in a modern AU shines in this story. Definitely not a story for fans of the Jiang family, but a story for everyone who wants to see some retribution for the things Wei Wuxian went through. Here, Jiang Fengmian dies during a night-hunt accident where Jiang Cheng's golden core gets destroyed and Madam Yu makes Wei Wuxian give his golden core to him, unfortunately for her, his body-cam is still filming everything. Wei Wuxian finds himself taken in by Wen Qing and her family and we get the sweetest found family and Dadxian vibes here and then meets Lan Wangji as well, who's highly judgemental at first but soon finds himself drawn to Wei Wuxian as well. This story really got it all, the drama, the horny, the softness, the restitution & humor. Excerpt: Still Wei Wuxian forced himself to at least try one last time. “You could also interview me. Have me talk to your best talisman experts,” Wei Wuxian said, forcing himself to keep the desperation out of his voice. “Interviews are scheduled based on receipt of proper credentials and references.” “I don’t have any, at least not right now. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be a great teacher.” “No references, no interview.” “Come on. Look, ask me anything about talismans. You’re an experienced cultivator, right? So you must know enough to at least interview me to see if I know what I’m talking about.” “Simply ‘knowing about something’ is not sufficient. Our lecturers are renown cultivators, and masters in their fields. No references, no interview.” Wei Wuxian felt frustration well up in him, especially at the reminder that Lan Wangji didn’t see him as a cultivator. No one would, in his current condition. Why would they? He didn’t have a functional core, which was the main scale against which all cultivation efforts were measured. He thought he had done a good job of not getting his hopes up about the teaching position, but the suffocating feeling constricting his chest was calling him out for being a liar. He should have known better. Why did he never learn? Some people had luck on their said, but Wei Wuxian had never been one of them. “Right. Of course. Because it would be impossible for someone who wasn’t born to the fucking clan nobility to ever actually be good at something, and the cost of taking the mastery test makes sure that other people can’t do it!” Lan Wangji’s lips parted slightly, like he might say something, but his expression was as opaque and emotionless as before. Wei Wuxian didn’t need to sit around and listen to him defend the clan system. “Good to know that the Lan are just the same as all the other sects,” Wei Wuxian continued, his lips twisting into a sarcastic smile. “Thanks for making that clear.”
pov alternating, modern setting, modern with magic, yu ziyuan being an asshole, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family bashing, canon divergence, golden core reveal, burial mounds ensemble as family, golden core transfer, golden core transfer fix-it, top lan wangji/bottom wei wuxian, dual cultivation, strangers to lovers, misunderstandings, meet ugly, families of choice, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort

Hiiii! I've just read a great story I'd like to recommend for your blog!My favorite kind of story with Misunderstandings and Angst with a happy ending. Hahahhh. In this one everyone believes WWX died in an accident and it really impacted LWJ's mental health. When WWX came back, LWJ decided to hide it from him as well as he could. And of course WWX made an assumption that LWJ is just tired of him and is avoiding him. Anyway, I'm really bad at it hahahh. But the story is definitely worth reading!!! @reluctantways

The Shadows of My Old Palaces, Falling Across the Moats by ChilianXianzi

The Shadows of My Old Palaces, Falling Across The Moats
by ChilianXianzi
T, 8k, Endgame Wangxian
Summary: Wen Qing would probably never know who their nameless cultivator used to be, or what kind of secret grief he hides beneath his bowed shoulders. But the man makes Wei Wuxian smile, in a way he doesn't anymore after Lan Wangji refused to stay for dinner and never visited again. And perhaps, surrounded by death and resentment as they are, perhaps that's enough. After wandering the realm for years in the wake of his wife's death, Qingheng-Jun came to the Burial Mounds - And stayed. Kay's comments: Qingheng-Jun/Wei Wuxian is not a pairing I would have ever read on my own, but since it was written by ChilianXianzi, I knew I had to give it a try and I wasn't disappointed! Nothing happens between them and the story is endgame Wangxian, but Qingheng-Jun certainly develops feelings for our Xiao-laozu. Really loved the idea of him just becoming a rogue cultivator after his wife's death and the Lan clan merely saying he's in seclusion because they have no idea where he is. In the end, it all works out too and he goes to scold his nephews and brother into making things right with Wei Wuxian and the Wens. Mostly The Untamed canon! Excerpt: "Aiyah, Daozhang, you're so good at this," Wei Wuxian sighs, "Are you sure you were a rogue cultivator and not some prodigious farmer, huh?" "My-" Daozhang Zhou's voice falters for the briefest moment, and Wen Qing holds herself against looking up from tending to her own herbs, ears pricking, "Someone very dear to me was fond of growing things, and I suppose I learned some things, watching her." "She used to plant all sorts of things, made them grow so beautifully," Daozhang Zhou continues, his voice now quiet and musing, as if he's not talking to Wei Wuxian anymore, "But she loved gentians, covered her garden with it, and gave me the dried blossoms to keep." Even Wei Wuxian has turned quiet beside the Daozhang, a heartbreaking understanding in his grey eyes. Wen Qing had always wondered what their nameless Daozhang had lost, what ghosts he carries around his shoulders so heavily - But now that she's seen the outline of it forms, it just makes her feel a too-familiar bereftness. A kindred grief. Wen Qing stands quietly, and leaves the two to their shared grief and potatoes.

Sending a reader rec! I want to highly recommend this wonderful magi-historical MDZS fic that I just finished. Wangxian are wu, basically historical Chinese shaman-type figures. The plot is unique and creative and Wangxian are just wonderfully characterized. Plenty of hurt/comfort, plenty of plot/case fic, plenty of literal fluffy bunnies, it's got something for everyone! Bonus: the author clearly did their research, from what I remember about historical Chinese religion from my college religious studies days (while still making it accessible to people that know none of that). @flamingwell

Summary: Lan Wangji could not hope to find any other person like this, at least not so far from their home. But wu speak to birds and beasts across the realm. He may be known to them. He may be recognized, somewhere. The ravens and the hawks hear the name and cry it to the skies; the mouse and the fox both carry it with them through snow-washed fields. Below ground the beetles gnaw it into roots and bark. Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian. OR: Tasked with finding the Yunmeng Jiang's missing wu, a young man called Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji recruits a familiar and travels across the land in search of him. His familiar, a black hare with a little too much personality, seems to have his own secrets.

Brand New Moves
by tawaen
T, 7k, Wangxian
Summary: In the most ambitious heist ever planned, Team Rocket attempts to steal two legendary Pokémon – one from the Burial Mounds Gym Leader, Wei Ying; and one from the Snow White Pavilion Gym Leader, Lan Zhan. These two former rivals are paired up to battle against one another for the first time since becoming Gym Leaders! Will they be able to defeat Team Rocket? Or will they loose their composure and their Pokémon? (Just joking, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan never even notice Team Rocket. They only have eyes for each other!) Kay's comments: It's been a hot minute since I last consumed any Pokémon content, but you don't have to be very knowledgeable to get the gist of this fic. Rivals fem Wangxian meet again after years apart to battle, now both as gym trainers and it goes differently than expected. Really loved the slow clearing of the past misunderstandings between them and of course the Wen-Wei found family vibes. And Wei Ying the MILF. Excerpt: “Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan breathes out raggedly. She comes up to the top landing, but doesn't get any closer. “Can you tell me what I did wrong?” Wei Ying tries to keep her voice even, “You didn't do anything wrong.” She doesn't succeed. Her voice breaks as she says that. “You forfeit the match. You are crying. Please, what can I do?” Lan Zhan keeps her voice soft. Before today, they have not spoken in almost four years. Wei Ying has never heard her be so gentle. She clearly will not leave until she knows Wei Ying is fine. So Wei Ying just needs to convince her of that, somehow. “You really didn't do anything wrong. I just wasn't expecting to see Froslass again. I swear, I just need a moment. Then I'll be fine.” Lan Zhan sucks in a breath, “I traded to get Froslass because the other person told me you were the original trainer.” “I'm glad she's with you. That's... I really am happy. I'm just surprised.” Wei Ying sternly tells herself that she is happy. This is what she originally wanted.

T, 5k, Wangxian & Wei Changze/Lan Qiren
Summary: Wei Ying learns quickly that he cannot be seen by the Jiang. Or, more specifically, he can’t be seen by Madam Yu, who seems to be around the streets of the city more than she ever had been before. Her seeing him will result in the usual spoken barbs, but also in lashings with the sparking purple of Zidian if there are few around. - Or, the one where Wei Changze returns. Kay's comments: Recently re-read this gem and loved it just as much as I did when the story first came out. Having Wei Changze and Lan Qiren getting together works surprisingly well and of course it's a delight to have Wei Ying grow up in Gusu, as a Lan. It starts out heart-breaking and then it turns out so soft and the petty part of me enjoyed watching the Jiangs flounder as well. Excerpt: Qiren looks as if he’s seen a ghost when the disciple leads Wei Changze into his office, dropping his brush. In a way, he has seen a ghost. “Changze,” he gasps, stumbling to his feet, nearly overturning his desk in his haste, “you—how? The boy??” “She’s gone, a-Ren,” and he can’t keep the grief out of his voice. He’s had five years, yes, but really he’s only had the past week. “I almost died during the hunt; I didn’t remember anything—not until a week ago. a-Ying—” He almost feels like he’s going to collapse if he has to think about what a-Ying went through for months, years, when he should’ve been loved and cared for. “Sit,” Qiren says, leading him to the table, hand remaining on his arm as if when he lets go, Wei Changze will disappear again. “a-Ren, they threw him out,” he says, because he has not been able to talk about this with anyone else and he cannot hold back any longer. “Fengmian didn’t even know if he still lived; my son, like he was naught but some trash!”

I've got two stories to boost this time around! Two events took place this week: the MXTX Remix and the MDZS Mixtape, and I wrote a story for both events.
For the MXTX Remix, I finally got to write a Lan Wangji stays in the Burial Mounds AU, which is something I've wanted to do for a while. It's a canon divergence fix-it with a happy ending for Wangxian and the Wens and got the softest vibes.
🔒 Hold Me Tight
by thelastdboy (@thelastdboyy)
T, 8k, Wangxian
Summary: They were not going to be able to live in the Burial Mounds forever. They probably wouldn’t even be able to live in the Burial Mounds for long, but as it was, Lan Wangji allowed himself to hope that they would be able to continue surviving here as long as necessary and one day, they would be able to escape this place.
~*~
The second story, which got written for the MDZS Mixtape, is a modern AU with a reincarnation twist. Wei Ying meets Lan Zhan at university and soon falls for him, if only Lan Zhan was a bit more approachable! He has his parents alice and supporting him and two little sisters as well. The last chapter will be uploaded today!
🔒 Have We Met Before
by thelastdboy (@thelastdboyy)
T, WIP, 6k, Wangxian
Summary: In his opinion, Wei Ying was adjusting well to his new life as a university student far away from his hometown and family. He got into new hobbies, made some amazing friends and did well in his studies. Now, if he could only befriend that handsome guy, he kept running into. Something about him caught Wei Ying's attention and he just couldn't stop thinking about him. It almost felt, as if they had met before. Seeing him reminded Wei Ying of the smell of sandalwood incense and the taste of a fragrant wine, while making his heart yearn for something he couldn't quite name.

The Laoshi and The Yiling Laozu
by chiyukimei (@chiyukimei)
M, 7k, Wangxian
Summary: Burial Mounds era Lan Qiren and Wei Wuxian had time travelled. - Lan Qiren narrowed his eyes. “You’ve heard of the Patriarch of Yiling before, boy?” Wei Wuxian watched his former teacher with suspicion, “Laoshi, you’ve been there when the sun was shot?” Lan Qiren nodded. Kay's comments: It's rare to find a Lan Qiren time-travels story that still feels close to his character like here. Though he's still a much nicer uncle than he is in canon, he actually needs some time warming up to Wei Wuxian after accidently time-travelling together with him. It's also extremely cute to see how much Wei Wuxian enjoys running around younger Lan Wangji and playing with him. Excerpt: A few days later, Lan Qiren caught sight of Wei Wuxian running alongside Lan Wangji, trying to make him smile and shouting non-stop: Lan Zhan this, Lan Zhan that. He tried hard to not roll his eyes at that childish behavior. God forbid, this man was twenty years old, and still, had no trouble blending in with the fifteen-year-olds. After Wangji left, he stopped Wei Wuxian. “What are you doing?” Wei Wuxian asked with a surprised face, “What am I doing?” Lan Qiren, “Why are you pestering Wangji?” Wei Wuxian bit his lower lip, “I’m not pestering him. I just want to be friends with him.” Lan Qiren, “Why?” Wei Wuxian happily exclaimed, “Isn’t it obvious? He is an upstanding, righteous, and beautiful person. Who wouldn’t want to make friends with him? If he smiled a bit all the sisters would be running after him.” “…Hmm, maybe that’s a good thing he doesn’t smile. You don’t have to deal with all those ladies Laoshi!” Lan Qiren grumbled, “Shameless!” Wei Wuxian, “Hah! That’s what Lan Zhan says, all the time! I really forgot how strict he was even when he was a teenager.”

Fatherhood's Calling
by Fortune_Maiden (@fortune-maiden)
G, 1k, Xuanli
Summary: Jiang Yanli thought of Wei Wuxian as a son. It made so much sense. Everyone knew that Wei Wuxian lost his mother at a young enough age to barely remember her. And everyone also knew that Madame Yu had never been fond of him. So why wouldn’t compassionate gentle Jiang Yanli start to see that pitiable urchin as her own? But... if Jiang Yanli saw Wei Wuxian as a son, then didn’t that make Jin Zixuan, her husband, his father? Kay's comments: This is the funniest concept and it's absolutely delightful. I never even knew this idea of Jin Zixuan stepping up to be Wei Wuxian's new father figure was something that existed before it blew up on Twitter, but now I can't stop thinking about it. This story delivers on that idea and it's just so funny. The way Jin Zixuan is reckoning with the realization that Jiang Yanli sees Wei Wuxian as a son and what that means for him. Just awesome. Excerpt: After marrying Jiang Yanli, Jin Zixuan had to agree. Jiang Yanli was nothing but affectionate and supportive towards him, but the way she looked at him as his wife was very different from how she looked at Wei Wuxian. It was also, however, different from how she looked at her actual blood-sibling Jiang Wanyin. Not by much (Jiang Yanli loved both of her little brothers immeasurably after all), but just enough to give Jin Zixuan a sixth sense for when the conversation was about to turn to Wei Wuxian. The look on her face was definitely familiar, Jin Zixuan thought, but he couldn’t place it until the day that same look lit up A-Li’s face as she happily announced that she was pregnant.

Summary: A few mornings later, Wei Ying stares up at his ceiling and listens to the wind blowing through the willow tree outside his window. It is 4:15 a.m. and he is wide awake once more. For a while, the howling wind is the only sound he hears, and then, there is movement from somewhere below him. The opening and closing of cabinet doors. Light footsteps tapping on a hardwood floor. The clanging of metal against glass. Lan Zhan has arrived at the bakery. Wei Ying allows himself to be swept away by the symphony of sounds that Lan Zhan unknowingly creates as he begins his day. His breathing slows, and his body relaxes bit by bit. He imagines that he is listening to a lullaby written just for him. And just like a lullaby, the symphony guides him back to sleep. Or: Wei Ying lives in the apartment above Lan Zhan's bakery. Or part 2: Wei Ying learns how to accept Lan Zhan's help. Kay's comments: Everybody wake up, AO3 user sunflowersfield has dropped another soft banger. This was incredibly soft, with Wangxian meeting and immediately both falling for each other and you can just tell with both of them and Lan Wangji makes such a perfect baker! The early hours and the routines and the cuteness of his creations with which he spoils Wei Wuxian - perfection. And I love how they both look out for each other and make space for each other in their lives. Excerpt: Wei Ying has lived above the bakery for nearly two years, but Lan Zhan has only owned it for three months. Wei Ying noticed him for the first time on a Saturday morning. The sun was bright that day, but there was a chill in the air. He was returning from the store, carrying three bags of groceries in each hand and eagerly awaiting the warmth of his apartment. He did not have time to stop. And yet, two things caught his eye: a brand new sign above the bakery door and a glimpse of someone new standing behind the front counter. Someone he felt drawn to. Wei Ying had rushed up the stairs to his apartment and unpacked his groceries as quickly as possible. When he was finished, he ran back down the stairs and out onto the sidewalk. He waited patiently as a mother exited the bakery with a stroller, and he reached out to hold the door for her. Then, he walked inside. "Hi,” he said, and the man behind the counter looked up. "Hello,” the man responded, meeting his gaze. And that was how it all began.
