OK! I haven't tried this as of yet, I've been a bit busy, BUT! I have a complete rule set for two players (as it is in the podcast)!

You will need:

Two identical decks of cards

Some way of marking the cards

Before starting:

Take 18 cards from one deck, and mark them with the 9 animals (two of each)

Play:

Begin by setting stakes. One player asks a question, and then the other does, and the first player decides if the set of questions will be played or not. If they choose to pass the set, the player who asked the second question then asks the first question.

Shuffle the deck, and split it in the middle, placing one pile as a face-down draw pile, and the other as a face-up discard pile.

Deal two cards to each player

During a player's turn, they may either hold/stay pat (depending on how close you want to stick to original poker), or flip.

Flipping is where a player discards one card, and may either take the top card of the face-up discard pile, or the top card of the draw card.

Holding/staying pat (for those who don't play poker) is where you do not wish to change your hand, and keep the cards you have.

Once both players hold, each flips their hand, and the best hand wins.

Animal cards, in order of precedence:

Goat

Sheep

Pig

Guinea Pig

Vole

Rat

Mouse

Hamster

Shrew

Hands, in order of precedence:

The best hand is a two and a goat (naturally)

In any hand, an animal is percieved as better than a standard card.

Animals are checked for rank before number cards.

Animal cards are seen in order as above, while standard cards are seen from lowest to highest, before you reach pairs.

Pairs can be of either suit or number, and follow standard poker precedence if of the same rank (ace being the highest, two being the lowest), and then pairs of suits should be added together (a two is worth 2, a three is worth 3, and so on so forth, with a jack being worth 11, a queen being worth 12, a king being worth 13, and an ace being worth 14), with the highest sum winning. These pairs of suits follow after pairs of the same rank.

A pair of animals is worth nothing.

Example hands:

3 of hearts, vole vs 5 of diamonds, shrew - first hand wins

3 of hearts, vole vs 5 of diamonds, vole - second hand wins

Whoever wins has their question answered by the other player.
