What a fantastic week in the Atacama desert. We made some lifelong friendships and went on some great day and night adventures all the way up to 14000 ft where the night sky was the best that we've ever seen. Here is one of many shots from the third night of our astro tour.

Sometimes my favourite time to photograph the night sky is right before it gets really dark. This night started off with a beautiful wash of some red and green air glow 🌟✨ Canon r6, iso 6400, sigma 28mm f1.4, 15seconds, stacked for focus.

I hope many of you are having a Happy Easter!! Here is my newest version of the Rosette nebula in natural light colours featuring the beautiful star cluster NGC 2244. This was created from a relatively short total exposure for my type of light pollution as I ran out of time to collect more frames before it slipped behind the black walnut trees at home. I will probably revisit this lovely part of the sky with narrow band filters in another year but I do hope you enjoy this view!✨🔭 Imaged with the Astrotech 8in RC, AP 0.67 reducer, @skywatcherusa EQ 6pro, SBIG 8300 @sbigimagingsystems , Astrodon LRGB filters, Lx130min, R,G and B x 50min each. Still running strong on Windows Vista for 15 years.

This past 'typically cloudy' winter, I decided to make a much better effort to sieze any clear sky opportunities to collect deep-sky data even if it was just an opening of a few hours here and there. As a result, I finally have an image of this beautiful nebula. 'The Running Man Nebula Sh2-279' is very mesmerizing with it's hydrogen gas peeking behind dense dust that has reflected star light shining on it and giving this three dimensional appearance of a running stick figure. This was one of the best auroral displays that I've seen since 2004 here in the Niagara region in southern Ontario.After a quick check on our weather station website, in the afternoon leading up to the event, I saw the banner that alerted me that the sun was pretty active and that aurora was a possiblity. So in the evening I set up my camera for sequenced exposures on my front steps facing north. It was initially cloudy but I knew that breaks were possible. It was worth clearing space on my memory card to take tons of frames that might later get deleted. Well after a good couple of hours, the high cloud deck thinned out at the perfect time to reveal an incredible outburst.  Incredible from our perspective being this far south. After scrolling through several hundred frames, I found a few favourite shots to share. 

I'm glad that so many of you also took the opportunity to do the same thing and set up your camera to catch this display despite the clouds. It's amazing that the sun is still two years away from the solar maximum so let's look forward to more of these events.

The Milky Way galaxy with its colour and structure is revealed in an exposure of only 20-seconds near one of the lodges in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. We will be going back here in the middle of May when the Milky Way orientation will look like this by 10pm and after midnight the galactic center will be directly overhead. There are also some large beautiful night sky objects that can't be seen from North America like the Eta Carina Nebula and Large and Small Magellanic clouds. We still have some spots left for our San Pedro workshop from May 18 to the 24th so send me or @yuribeletsky a message if you are interested in getting all the details and joining us. Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) taken on Feb 13th when it was magnitude 6.9. I wish I had more opportunities to image this comet. It was so amazing to see the many images online showing how it transformed from day to day. Anyway this is one of my versions... Here's another shot of Venus and Jupiter. I took this one between the walnut tree branches from home yesterday evening. I was too tired to leave home so I had to get a little creative. If you zoom in, you can see Jupiter's moons! The pair will still look close tonight... in the west after sunset. I'll have to reshare this image on Halloween. This evening really exceeded our expectations✨... with Jupiter and Venus getting closer in the next 24hrs I figured it would be a good idea to take any opportunity to go out and capture it even the skies weren't clear. In the winter season we get so much cloud and depending on where the clouds are, it can make for a huge success or a complete wash! After dinner I checked the satellite imagery and thought there would be a chance for a few breaks along the western horizon and there were🫡!! My daughter and I just had to wait patiently on location while we froze our fingers and toes a little. We weren't prepared to spend a long time out🧤🧣.. should have known better. Anyway, we found this spot several minutes from home by surfing google maps. All we wanted were a few nice trees 🌳. If you didn't get a chance to capture this beautiful conjunction this evening, there is another chance tomorrow and the day after (March 1 and March 2) depending on your weather. When I saw the "Aurora Warning" banner at the top weather station website last night, I excitedly set up my camera to take sequenced exposures through the night. I couldn't see anything happening but I figured if something flares up, my camera will catch it. Well to my surprise and utter joy, in the early morning I scrolled quickly through hundreds of images and there they were... numerous frames of the Northern Lights. It's been years since we had aurora like this from here. I was on the south side of Lake Ontario so the lights along the northern horizon is the Greater Toronto Area. The light pollution did not stop the show from being captured. I know a bunch of my Ontario friends did not get much sleep last night🤩 🌠📷 Canon 17 to 40mm @17mm. Iso 1600, f5.6, 15seconds. This past Family Day long weekend I went to Niagara Falls 🇨🇦 with my youngest daughter to enjoy some time away from home and meet up with Taku photography and his community for the Niagara Falls Sunrise Meet. We had a blast and met some really wonderful photographers and made some new friends (listed below). In the evening we enjoyed dinner and a beautiful fireworks display over the falls. In the morning despite it being cloudy we all got up super early to catch some pictures in the pre-dawn sky. The meet-up ended with a wonderful pancake breakfast. Thanks for planning this Taku!! Here is a close up view of a small reflection nebula called vdB 27 that is amid the vast dustiness of the Taurus molecular cloud. The star that is iluminating it is a variable called RY Tauri. These are the types of nebulea that I absolutely love because they are a fun challenge and off the beaten path. This is a collaborative effort with my friend Paul Mortfield who acquired the data with his telescope in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I hope you enjoy the view✨.
