Meant to post this sooner ... image from last week’s opening of Crosscurrents: Canada in the Making @textilemuseumofcanada. This is a screen-printed yardage by Cape Dorset Inuit artist Ovilu Tunnillie (1949–2014) entitled “Friendly Whales’’ from the 1960s. The following is an excerpt from the didactic panel ... An undocumented collection of 181 Inuit screen printed fabrics created in the 1960s, was donated to the Textile Museum of Canada in 2017. Building on a centuries-old Inuit graphic tradition, printmaking was introduced in Cape Dorset through the establishment of a printmaking co-op by Canadian artist James Houston in 1958. The practice began as an economic incentive for the Inuit, who were making the transition from subsistence hunting and trapping to a wage economy in settled communities. By the 1960s, a number of Inuit artists were using the co-op studio, among them Ovilu Tunnillie, who contributed to the Cape Dorset print program. The program initially included a commercial hand-printed fabric enterprise, but manufactured textiles from the North found a limited market, and this component was ultimately abandoned in the late 1960s. @dorsetfinearts #crosscurrents (at Textile Museum of Canada)
