I do enjoy it when a game is clearly trying to use a wildly inappropriate pre-built game engine for what it wants to do, but I don't see why RPG Maker should have all the fun. Do grid-based tactical combat in Inform. Write a rhythm game in Twine. Implement that precision puzzle platformer in Ren'Py. You know you want to.

The ultimate trust isn't about prying all doors open

I am replaying Bridge to the Turnabout right now for reasons, and what I specifically admire about Edgeworth here is that he doesn't pry into the awkward dynamics going on between Phoenix and Iris.

Even though he notices.

He only asks whether she knows Wright. She replies that she 'deceived' Phoenix 5 years ago. She doesn't clarify how, but, she's sure it's better he forgets her and all that happened.

And not once does Edgewoth ask any details. Wright didn't share it with him. Nor did Iris. So he respects it.

He sees it pains Phoenix.

So the only thing he insists on is that Iris comes clean to Wright. Makes it his condition to defend her.

He states it twice, in fact. And again, no trace of question—only the demand that Wright gets to know the truth . . . The way he phrases it is kind of bittersweet to me. 🥺

And don't be fooled, he has all the reasons to want to know! Wright is his dear and indispensable (ugh) friend who's actively hurting, and Edgeworth himself seems to know her from somewhere, but can't quite remember how.

He starts digging into Iris's background after Wright is back on case—

but even then, he's doing it via his own means. To Wright, all he says is resigned,

Even now, he respects Wright's right to remain silent, despite this making his job harder, despite the fact that he's realized that it concerns him personally. That the Dahlia shitshow he was dragged into six years ago has something to do with Iris.

It brings me to an interesting thought. That the kind of trust and bond these two share . . . One might say that the trust is when you have no secrets from each other. But here, I see that the trust is also when your partner chooses not to pry, seeing you being uncomfortable with sharing something. And you trust him with keeping it contained.

So you can lie back in your bed in the hospital, give your most treasured belongings, your identity to the man who flew across the ocean just to see if you're still breathing, and be sure that he will always have your best interests in mind. That the secrets you don't want him to know will stay safe and closed, no matter how curious he is.

That's the ultimate trust to me.

A wizard that regularly breaks into the gem shop where magical gemstones are cut from rough stone into their more commonly known sparkly faceted shapes - but he doesn't steal any of them. He sweeps the floor. Bags the stone crumbs and shards and dust he sweeps up. Breaks out again. The goblins who run the gem shop never bother to investigate why the floor just cleans up on its own, they assume that they've got a house elf or something.

So the wizard takes the shards and all, and grinds them all into evenly sized teeny tiny crumbs, and mixes them all together. The magic gemstone chips and crumbs become something new: magic pocket sand. Nobody knows what it'll do to you if he throws it at you. Least of all him.

my new thing whenever an embarrassing memory jumps up out of some backwater neuron to t-bone my present-day thought process is to declare a statute of limitations. like i can burn down an entire building in the state where i live and the law deems it both unfair and illegal to prosecute me after six years have passed, i think that thing i said in high school can be expunged from my record.
