âI mean, at least you learned how to do it, thatâs good!â Elijah said and smiled, nodding slowly as Rafe told him the story. âItâs not crazy, everyone around here has to do it, were you really expecting someone to come into your room and clean your clothes for you? You would have no clothes by the end of the month.â Elijah said, shaking his head. âYouâve been cleaning your room, right?â
âThey donât even do that?!â Raphael was livid. Being expected to take care of his own clothes was one thing, but cleaning? Like a maid? That was the straw that broke the camelâs back. âWell, someone has been cleaning my room. I just assumed the help was doing it. Must be my roommate then. Oh well. I should probably tip him.â Itâs customary in America right? Thatâs what he thought. Every time he went to New York with his mother she made a point of teaching him that Americans expect tips for services.

Charlotte looked up, eyebrow raised as she finished prepping her pointe shoes for class, staring at the boy who had just walked in with a pile of laundry in his arms. âUhmâ congratulations?â she asked, wondering if she was being punked. âHave you.. never done laundry before?âÂ
âNo, have you?â Rafe gave her a funny look, then told her as if this was an obvious conclusion. âIn my home and in my old school this was done by the help.â There were in fact a lot of things that Raphael had no idea how to do because heâs always had employees, nannies and concierges to figure things out for him. At least he was eager to do all of these things, at least for the time being. He saw them as curious novelties.

âI am very proud of you, Raf!â Ashley mused jumping up and giving the boy a hug, knowing that the school had been an adjustment for him. âYou know you could always take them out to be dry cleaned that way you donât have to do it yourself but Iâm still very proud.â
âOh thank you!â Rafe liked Ashley. She was always nice to him, from the day he arrived to that camp until now. So naturally he wanted to do all the things he could to be in her squad. Not that Elijah wasnât being helpful and overall great and patient, but the boy really felt like branching out and not being an extension of his step-brother. âI got an idea! We could go to the laundry shop together! We would save a trip and I would get to know the town peoples better.â

âI learned how to do my laundry!â The boy exclaimed as if this was a huge breakthrough. âI was under the impression that the Help would do that for us, and I even asked daddy to call the school because the dirty clothes were piling up!â He told the other this very worrisome story as if it were a charming tale, and in a way the french accent kinda worked towards that goal. âTurns out, we have to do it ourselves! Crazy, no?â

âI mean, what were you going to do if the first laptop broke down or something? Or someone stole it from you? You would lose all your files⌠Donât worry, Iâll help you put everything in a Cloud and then you wonât lose all your precious files.â Elijah told Raphael with a smile. Elijah noticed that Raphael looked down when he told him not to talk to the school board. He didnât mean to give him an order, but it didnât make sense that Raphael would go and talk to someone just so he could have his closet. âIt wasnât really a joke⌠It was just a metaphor, Rafe, because you brought a lot of stuff. I seriously donât know where youâre going to keep all of this? And it might annoy your roommate too. Iâm sure thereâs some things that you donât need.â
Rafe just shrugged at Eliâs question. He was never the type to think things through and he wasnât planning on starting that right now. At least he listened to Elijah, and immediately gave his half-brother a whiny sigh and sucked his teeth before looking over at the chests. âI suppose I could do without the cocktail and formal chests, for now.â He then pointed at two of the chests and asked Elijah: âWhen is prom, by the way?â

A sigh of relief escaped the boyâs lips, though he had a feeling the date might mean something different to Jacob then it did to Rafe. Still, he would make it a night Rafe wouldnât forget. âThereâs an arcade downtown that I rented out for the night. Thereâs a bowling alley and a pizza place inside. Just you, me, and a bunch of games.â He then shrugged, adding âAnd a few employees to make sure we donât steal shit.â
âSounds fun!â He typed enthusiastically before going in for a somewhat long kiss that almost turned into a make-out session in the middle of the hallway. Rafe couldnât really believe that Jacob would want anything serious with him, so the boy was trying to condense all the fun as quickly as possible so that when he eventually pissed him off or made Jacob bored of all his Raphaelisms, there would be something nice to remember him by. âIâll see you there! đđđâ Send.

âAre you kidding me? You bought a second laptop because the other one is full? You know you can keep your files in a Cloud, right? Then you can delete everything but itâll still be in the Cloud.â Elijah said, shaking his head at the thought of buying another laptop just because the other was full. âYouâre not going to talk to the school board, theyâre not going to provide you with a closet, Rafe. This is all the space you have and you have to deal with it.â Elijah said with a sigh as he kept looking around Rafeâs room. âFine, you can keep some of your clothes in my room, I have some space because unlike you, I didnât bring my whole house with me to school.â
âI did not know about this âCloudâ you talk about.â Heâs seen some messages pop here and there about saving his files to this cloud, but dismissed all of them as mumbo-jumbo for nerds. Which was exactly Elijahâs area of expertise, it seems. Then he talked a little like his older brothers... Being imposing and giving orders. He told himself Elijah was different, but in the end it was like a sort of conditioning, listening to his brothers like that, so the boy just looked down a little awkwardly, thinking about what did he do to upset Eli when he heard the comment about the chests. âWhole house, hahahaha!â Rafe gave his step-brother a giggle, being relieved that he wasnât truly angry about this situation, given that he just made a joke about it... Or at least that was Rafeâs idea of a joke. It had to be a joke, right?! âOh Elijah, you entertain me!â

Elijah looked over at the clothes that Raphael had brought. He knew that he was extra already, but once he saw the eight chests in Raphaelâs room, he thought it was way too much. âRafe, I know how much you like your stuff, but you have to realize that this is way too much⌠Who brings eight chests to a boarding school? I mean, is there someone inside of one of those chests?â Elijah asked and shook his head. âAnd why do I have two laptops?â Elijah asked as he pointed at the two laptops in one of the chests that was open. âAnd Picasso didnât paint the Sistine Chapel!â
âThe first one is full of files and I had to buy a second.â His voice cracked a little as he whined. Even though he studied at a boarding school already, it at least had individual suites for the students. And Walk-in closets. His computers were filled mostly with selfies and videos of himself all around the world for vacation, but Raphael spoke as if it was extremely and painfully obvious that this was the reason any person would have two Macbooks. âI should talk to the school council of administration! They should be able to provide me with at least a closet!â To be honest, Raphael never had a problem that wouldnât go away if he called his daddy and made him have a strongly worded conversation. âOr I could keep some of my clothes in your room, if it is not going to bother you...â

Jacob smiled at the kisses before it grew at the signing. He even had the facial expression right. âIâm great, thanks,â he said, signing along with his words. He then took a deep breath, deciding to not put it off or try to delay with small talk. He looked into Rafeâs eyes, raised his eyebrows, and asked âDo you want to go on a date with me?â His heart was pounding out of his chest. He hadnât asked anyone out since his freshman year, and that didnât end well, so to say he was nervous was an understatement.
âSure!â Rafeâs reply was a little too casual and nonchalant, but to him a date had no deeper implications or gravitas. He went on friendly dates with his acquaintances back home all the time. The part he didnât know is that most of his old french contacts didnât really care for him as much as they cared for the kind of experiences he could provide, being so eager to make friends. He gave Jacob a cheeky smile and ran his fingers through Jacobâs auburn hair before taking out his phone and looking how to signal:Â âWhere are we going?â

Rafe was getting used to his new routine. Slowly, but surely. He was already more confident in his ability to speak english without sounding like a computer, his skin was getting a little color and him and Jacob were thriving! One of the few things he didnât really took command of yet was all the math behind imperial units. Thatâs where the guy in front of him comes in. âHey, do you want some soda pop? I bought this large one and it seems that by large they mean that you can swim around in it!â

Jacob was nervous, for sure. He knew that he and Rafe had hooked up, but dating someone and sleeping with them were two totally different things⌠at least Jacob assumed thatâs how Rafe saw it, since Jacob had never really been the hook up type. So, when he saw Rafe on his way back to the dorms, he took a deep breath and walked up, tapping him on the shoulder and waving.
âHey there!â Rafe used his voice out of instinct before hugging Jacob and giving him a pair of kisses, one in each cheek. And then he greeted him with the proper âgood morningâ sign in ASL. The boy found an app that translated whatever he typed to ASL, so that helped a lot. It wasnât perfect, but beat texting all the time. âHow are you doing?â Furrowed eyebrows, pursed lips. He knew facial expression was a big deal when speaking sign language and recently Rafeâs gotten a taste of how it feels being the one who doesnât speak the same as everybody else.

âOh, you are the captain of the american football team!â Rafe knew Americans didnât call it american football, but he thought they should at least change the name to handegg if theyâre not even willing to concede this, because that was one hell of a weird sport for him and soccer didnât have the same ring to it. âMy brother talked a lot about you!â Incessantly, he wanted to say, but he would spare Elijah the embarrassment. âI am Raphael, but my friends call me Rafe. Pleasure to meet you!â

âWhat do you mean you donât need all of this?â Rafe asked his brother with incredulity in his eyes. He tried to be understanding to the fact that Elijah was, for the lack of a better term, small Bourgeoise. âThese are my summer clothes and I hand-picked every single item in these eight chests Elijah!â He spoke as if it was some herculean effort that deserved praise and recognition. âWould you ask Picasso to just get rid of the Sistine Chapel?â Wrong artist, but the analogy still stood. The chests didnât fit the room and their contents were never going to fit the drawers the school gave him. It was a travesty!

âI have been looking into buying one for me because here I can have my driving permit.â Back at home, Rafe would have to wait until he was 18 years old to get his first car, but in the States the boy could already start his driving lessons. That was one of the many reasons he was so in love with his new school (and country!) âI want a Ferrari, but it feels like everybody has one nowadays...â Well, everyone in Raphaelâs circles. He dropped this gem, completely unaware of how it sounded. âIt is a very noveau riche thing.â
he sighed heavily as he stepped out of his car, looking at the few people who gathered around it as he pulled up to the curb. âYes, yes.â holden stated in an exasperated tone as he walked away from the slick new lamborghini his dad had shipped out to him. âIt is new.â while he did appreciate the new car, it was far too flashy for him to want to drive. he would have much rather preferred a bronco or maybe even a range rover. âIf you ask me to take you for a ride, I swear I will punch you right here and now.â @knoxstarters
