Summary:

For your German states do you include their history or is it more like "Everyone came into existence somewhere between 1946-1949"?

(Especially regarding things like Bavaria and Brandenburg)

Thanks for the question! I headcannon Germany's states to be divided into two distinct groups: the Seniors and the Juniors.

The Seniors are, like you described, states that have an extensive history and used to be kingdoms/duchies/markgraves etc., until they lost their monarchial status and got turned into states (see Weimar Republic and the end of WW2). The personifications that fall into this category and I consider to be older than Germany are Bavaria, Hesse, Brandenburg, Saxony, Thuringia, Schleswig-Holstein and Saarland.

Then there are the Junior states, which fit your second description. They are younger than Germany and were all born after WW2 and between 1945 and 1952. Since their birth symbolized the dissolution and/or unification of former states and territories, I headcanon that the personifications that came before them died to pave the way for the "new ones". A good example would be Baden-Württemberg, who is the result of the territories of Baden, Württemberg and Hohenzollern getting united into a single state. The same goes for the rest of the Junior states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The idea of "old" and "young" states has its merits in the general discussion surrounding the German states. It's no surprise to me that the Junior states are even called "Bindestrich-Bundesländer", because they are the direct result of two or more territories being fused in favor of organizing Germany into the federal republic it is known for today.
