origins

daniel was born to an affluent family in oxford, where he attended prep school and got into heaps of trouble roughhousing it with the other rich, lazy, entitled children. daniel met charles xavier early on when he went to america to live with his father after his parents separated. he did nativ and volunteered with MDA rather than immediately entering university, but when he did he got into berkeley. cue the surprise of no one. charles and daniel remained in relative contact and during one of daniel’s rebuilding projects, he met up with lehnsherr, pryde and xavier in jerusalem and helped return some stolen artifacts to a local museum. daniel’s background at that point was in philosophy and ethics, and he entered medical school with the express purpose of pursuing clinical psychiatry. during his undergraduate years he met an older adviser named alan who took a shine to him, and they became involved. alan was a mutant and active on the mutant rights scene, and he was charming and funny and pushed all the right buttons; excepting that the dynamic was heavily imbalanced, they appeared happy on the outside. new haven should’ve been a breath of fresh air, the din of bruises and the taste of ash in his mouth from where his mother had died, helpless and alone, thousands of miles away while he struggled to escape the boot on his neck. yale medical was top notch, he dove himself into it and locked everything else away, joined mixed company and aepi and went to MRA protests. to the outside world, happy and contented. the real escape came at last, starting his residency at 26 he got matched to mount sinai and integrated flawlessly into the psych department. cultivating a reputation as someone confident and capable in his own abilities, while being grounded enough to connect with the patients. it was healing for them, and it was healing for him. after finishing into a prestigious fellowship at landstuhl, the US military base, daniel was asked to provide counseling services to the students at the xavier institute, to which he wholeheartedly said yes.

origin story

carmen was born in the endless desert of arad as the youngest of four siblings. his father died of a withering cancer during the course of ruchami’s pregnancy with him, and she raised them on her own with the meager scraps of her job sewing up rich people’s suits. samuel’s death left her withered, and carmen grew up desperate to fix his family, putting on many different hats but ultimately settling for over-achiever. then there’s the draft, some people care more than others, and carmen saw tzahal as his only option. if he went back to arad he’d work for ruchami’s boss, a cantankerous waif with shaking hands and more wrinkles than constellations in the sky. he ate slept breathed and pissed army until he made it through gibbush and was chosen for shayetet 13. carmen served for six years during which time he met teri gan on vacation with her family. after this teri visited as often as she could, sometimes staying with her extended family to spend more time with him. on one of her visits she revealed she was pregnant with kitty, and he resolved to make their transatlantic romance work (which it did!) during charles’s time in haifa volunteering with ICRC/ITS, carmen met both him and erik lehnsherr as well as daniel shomron and helped them recover stolen artifacts from a museum, which were being sold illegally at auction. despite not being a mutant, carmen made it known that he was an asset and they all parted on good terms. when he exited the service he immigrated to the united states to be with teri, and they moved to a modest home in brooklyn, new york. years later they would discovered that kitty was a mutant at age 13, and they turned to the xavier institute to help her, charles remembering his old friend offered carmen the chance to teach contact combat at the school. retired at middle-age was not a great look for him and no, devorah, i’m not going to work in your pastry shop because your son, the teenager you call “the manager,” is seventeen and i’m pretty sure i caught him fucking his girlfriend by the water cooler, so, not into that. (read: he readily accepted the teaching post, thank-you.)
