Once upon a time, there was a boy born to a fairy and a merman.  Neither did he have a tail like his father, nor wings like his mother. His parents, too, were no longer with him.

Mukashi mukashi yosei to maaman kara umaretekita shounen ga imashita. Kare ni wa chichi to onaji youna shippo mo naku haha to onaji you tsubasa sae mo inakatta. Jibun no ryoushin made mo, mou soba ni wa imasen deshita.

For a long time, he longed to return to the ocean where his father used to live. However, he could not breathe underwater.

He had no friends among the fairies either. They did not treat him as one of their own but simply… saw him as a cursed hybrid. Therefore, he set out on a journey to return to his father’s homeland.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. At last, the boy had reached the beautiful blue ocean. Sparing no time, he settled himself down on the golden, sandy beach.

Hibi ga shuu ni nari soshite shuu ga getsu ni tatta koro, yatto otoko no ko wa kirei na ao umi ni tadoritsuita no desu. Jikan wo mudasezu, kinniiro no you na sunahaba ni nekkorogarita no deshita.

A few days later, he noticed a nearby settlement with people like him who neither had wings, nor a tail. Reluctant at first, he eventually introduced himself to the leader and the members of the group.

Suujitsu go, kare wa nanto, kizukimashita, chikaku ni shounen no you na shippo mo tsubasa mo inai jinbutsu ga itan da to. Saisho wa shibutteita ga, yagate sono hitotachi to karera no riidaa ni jikoshoukai wo shiteitan desu.

The boy eventually grew up to be a brilliant, handsome young man. And despite being desired by the young women in the settlement, his heart remained with the sea. He did, however, took the chief’s daughter’s hand in marriage.

Yagate, shounen wa subarashii to utsukushii seinen ni narimashita. Soshite soko no josei tachi ga kare no koto wo nozondeiru ni mo kakawarazu, shounen no kokoro wa umi ni nokotteimashita ga, shounen wa shuuchou no musume to kekkon wo shita no desu.

It was a strange day. The man was preparing to set out to fish when his wife warned him against doing so. The sky was painted grey, almost as if a bad omen were to come true.

Aru fushigi na hi, seinen wa tsuri wo suru tame yuukou no junbi wo shi ikinari tsuma ga sou shinaide to keikoku shimashita.

But he did not listen.

Demo, shounen wa kikanakatta no desu.

It did not take long for the waves to grow uneasy; yet, he felt peace in his heart. Perhaps it was his time to go.

Shibaraku ga tatte ooki na harou ga kimashita nano ni, naze ka kokoro no naka ni wa totemo anshin deshita. Moshikasuru to mou iku jikan kamo shirenai.

In his final moments, he wished for himself to be reunited with his parents. The sea engulfed him and his body sank to the bottom of the ocean.

Shounen no saigo ni,  ryoushin to no saikai wo negaimashita. Shounen no karada wa umi ni nomikomi kaitei ni shizumemashita no desu.

Everything became white and the man was pulled into an embrace. Both his mother and father were smiling warmly at him.

Subete ga masshiro ni nari soshite shounen wa gyuutto dakishime raremashita, kare no haha to chichi ga shounen ni atatakaku hohoemi nagara.
