Broken Glass - A Preview for a Possible Fic

Crash, bang!
The peaceful atmosphere of the night was broken by the sounds of someone breaking in. Professor Franken Stein hadn’t been asleep when he heard the noises. No, he had been working on his computer like the night owl—or insomniac, it was really up for debate among most of the DWMA staff—he was.
Now who could that be? Surely everyone in the city would be smart enough to stay away from here, the Professor thought as he stood.
It had been about two days since the remedial lessons with Spirit’s daughter and the Star Clan boy, one day since he had finally agreed to become a teacher at the academy, and it seemed that the list of interesting things happening around him was going to keep getting longer as the days wore on.
The sound of metal clattering on tile drew Stein’s attention to the kitchen and he moved towards the entryway quietly. What could be in his kitchen that someone wanted to steal?
“Who’s there?” he asked as he blocked off the only way out of the room.
There was a girl, no older than fourteen, kneeling on the counter to try and take something out of the cabinet. She was thin and pale, her ratty clothes hanging off her body loosely. Long, knotted silver hair with deep purple side-bangs that framed her face nearly obscured her sharp, olive-green eyes that watched him carefully.
The girl had multiple food items in her arms as she jumped off the counter, eyes darting around as she looked for a way to escape. She looked scared—of him, of the situation she had found herself in, he didn’t know—and he couldn’t help but feel pity for her. She obviously had only broken in to feed herself. Stein was about to offer to let her keep what she had taken and lead her to the front doors, so she wouldn’t have to jump through wherever she had forced herself in with all that food, when she squeaked and promptly dropped everything.
The teen darted off towards a window—That’s how she got in, he found himself thinking as he noticed the shattered glass pane—and jumped through it, sprinting off into the night before Stein could do or say anything.
Franken sighed as he picked up one of the cans she had dropped. The girl was definitely someone of interest. Her soul seemed off, he could tell that much from their fleeting interaction.
While definitely looking human, it felt like a young witches. They didn’t know how to keep up a Soul Protect like most of the elders did, and it was painfully easy to tell them apart from a human. But the girl didn’t have a magical feel to her, not like a witch had.
And then there was her hair, the striking difference in colors that reminded him of his former girlfriend and lover, Bree Nigels. Her side braid had been black while the rest of her hair had been a luscious green color, however.
This girl was definitely puzzling, and Franken Stein decided then and there that he would figure out who she was if he saw her again.
