actually post rescinded i JUST remembered the sequence where hikigaya met yukinos mom and they're all sitting in a meeting discussing the organization of a prom with levels of tension as if it was a scene in the godfather.
this type of blend is actually all throughout the series so I wonder if wataru wanted people to really contextualize these genuinely heart wrenching and emotional sequences with "these are children in high school feeling more pain than the common pauper of the 1800s because they're afraid of losing each other's phone numbers" and that in itself is an extra layer of genius because Yeah growing up kind of sucks sometimes
if oregairu were like 20% more camp it could have easily ended up as a scooby doo/persona 3 style detective series where the trio are going around solving mysteries but it also would have maintained its emotional core so the mental image of these three losers so clearly in love with each other having this les miserables level drama happening within their group while on the outside it's like "thanks service club for finding my cat :)" is so funny to me

i dont think i will ever get over how in oregairu we have this sprawling emotional dynamic narrative between hikigaya yukino and yuigahama as like the only people these three have ever truly connected with and been fully honest and genuine and emotional where they each feel each other's pain so truly and how the love-triangle aspect of it all was entirely secondary to all of them being concerned that they'd lose each other as friends and each of them have extenuating circumstances that affect their bond and they're worried that the small but true bond that they made here will disappear after they graduate and they'll never reconnect once they go off on their separate ways but they all love each other so much and
and like to everyone else they see this shit happening and go "can you guys fucking calm down. its highschool"
