Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon vs. Pokemon X & Y (2/4)

Part 2 of the extra long rant

Which is were I have to talk about THAT. Pokémon X & Y felt like it had, by far, the WEAKEST story of all the games. All Pokémon games have pretty poor story telling in general, but at least the enemy team in the game feels at the very least a present enough threat that it draws your attention to when they are around. Team Flare are the least threatening team in the entire series. All teams are tacky in their own way. I mean Team Galactic were basically a bunch of Spacemen with horrible bowl cuts and yet they were obnoxious enough that running into them felt a certain dread. Team Flare on the other hand are just a bunch of Fashion Obsessed deviants whose whole motif is the world isn't beautiful like them. And at the core of that motif is their boss Lysandre. Lysandre is basically this world's version of Steve Jobs, a Silicon Valley tech head who's responsible for the Holowatches, one of which you're provided with at the beginning of the game. The gameplay use of it is just the bottom half of your DS screen but the story use is just for story people to occasionally pop up and tell you where to go. Lysandre is immediately pegged as the bad guy of the game almost as soon as you see him and yet no one really grasps the evil energy he emits. So when everyone is shocked when he turns evil and straight up declares he has access to a world ending weapon, I feel like bitch slapping everyone in the game. I could go on and on about how the story telling is awful, the characters feel flat and, the gameplay is easy but it all culminates in one glaring point: The game just felt rushed. Very often, I found that items and checkpoints I felt that I needed to EARN were just handed over by random NPCs and Story Characters that have little reason to just conveniently hand them over. The game felt more like a Pokémon Game Tour rather than a Pokémon Game in of itself. The player is guided through the motions of a Pokémon game rather than actually playing it. It was rather boring to play, I almost immediately put it down after I completed the main game, not really excited to check out the post game. However, the same can't be said about...

Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon vs. Pokemon X & Y (1/4)

It's a bit of a rant time but a good rant

So, it's been about...13 or so years since I played a Pokémon game, my last game being Pokémon White for the DS, so it's fair to say I haven't been keeping up with the whole Pokémon scene really. I didn't upgrade to a 3DS when it came out, I don't have a Switch so I didn't have access to the new Pokémon games but I at least briefly looked at the new Pokémon when the new games came out and it just didn't spark that new excitement I used to have. However, now that I have my own income, call it a weird itch when I decided to pick up where I left off and bought a 3DS and a copy of Pokémon X and Pokémon Ultra Moon. I was excited to try and recapture the childhood nostalgia of staying up, grinding my party up and going on a wild adventure to defeat the big baddie of the game and beat the Elite Four. I slotted in Pokémon X and started playing. And then within 3-4 days I set it down again because I beat the elite 4 and the game. Yea, so Pokémon X did some different things this time around, one of which was making it so that leveling your Pokémon is WAY easier this time around with the EXP share leveling ALL of the Pokémon in your party at the same time whenever you beat an enemy. This caused something that has never happened to me before. I was dangerously close to the point where my Pokémon would start disobeying me if I didn't beat the next gym. And that was just from paying the game NORMALLY. At the end of the game my party was a Delphox, Mantine, Mawile, Garchomp, Scolipede, and a Pangoro. And the highest level Pokémon on the team was the Mawile despite hardly using the thing. Due to the nature of the new EXP share system and Leveling speeds being different for every Pokémon, no matter what I did, the Mawile just ended up being a higher level than everyone else, finishing the Elite Four at level 82. 20 levels higher than the Champion's Pokémon. As a result of this over leveling shenaniganry, the Elite Four felt more of a push over than an actual challenge unlike pokemon games of years past. I still remember grinding my teeth from pokemon Ruby & Sapphire's Elite Four would kick my ASS every time. It felt like I had to build up a supply kit of Revives, Full Heals, Full Restores, and Berries just to beat them, and many times they'd still run me over. The Champion Diantha hardly came as a surprise to me and yet also was a huge push over. In fact, the only real challenge came from the final fight with Lysandre.
