ch. 18 — insufferable pda minus the p

stepping outside the clinic, you feel the september wind brushing against your cheeks. you get the urge to sneeze from the coldness of the air but it never comes; leaving you feeling as if a book has left you in a bad case of a cliffhanger. you scrunch your nose, in hopes of drawing out the sneeze yourself.

“you just spent a day in an animal center and now you’re acting like a cat?” childe, walking beside you teases and when you turn your head towards him, you try to resist the urge to play with the man’s hair. in your defense, he looks more like a cat than you are— with his orange hair and mischievous personality.

“will it kill you to be less annoying?” you fake the anger in your voice and childe seems to notice as he takes this as some sort of encouragement.

“what do you mean? this is me being less annoying already.”

an over exaggerated huff leaves your mouth and you start taking longer strides in attempt to pull ahead but with childe being sculpted by gods themselves, effortlessly catches up in no time.

the next thing he does surprises you— out of nowhere and without any warning, he wraps his much larger hand around yours, tugging at your hands to draw you closer than him.

“what’s the big idea?” you tug back, “no one’s around, we’re basically alone right now. you don’t actually have to hold my hand, you know.” you say as you take a quick scan of your surroundings, only seeing the flickering street lights above you, and the occasional stray cat that crosses the street.

“just to make sure.” the boy replies as if it’s the most logical explanation. “you can always let go of my hand if you want to though.” he says and you don’t even bother. because even if you do try to, he’ll never let go of yours and you’d just end up like a toddler following an adult.

“have you always been brazen?” you ask out of blue, taking the initiative to get to know the man before you as you two walk home. you’re already his (fake) girlfriend, why not make a friend out of him?

this comment, of course, doesn’t offend him at all. just like the kiss that you gave him in that cafe, childe takes it with a stride.

“brazen?”

“yeah, like… very straightforward, no filter, no shame at all?” you try to explain, “how you seem to not care for anything at all?”

childe momentarily stills, “i’ll have you know that i do care—“

“i didn’t mean it like that,”

“and i haven’t always been like this.”

you keep silent, worrying that you might have offended him. but with childe’s nature, he doesn’t show the tiny hurt that blooms inside his chest. he shouldn’t mind what you think of him anyway, you two weren’t even close like that. so, he opts to clear his throat.

“i was a shy kid too, you know.”

you look up to him, not responding or anything, earnest to listen to what he has to say, still feeling guilty over what happened moments ago.

“i only talked to my siblings at family gatherings. i hated being cooed over by distant relatives,” he pauses. “was a loner in kindergarten too, can you believe it?”

his laughter draws a snort from you, and you can't help but respond with a skeptical, "really?"

childe meets your gaze with a serious look, "yeah, but then came sixth grade. my brother, teucer, was in fourth grade then. one day, my mom had to rush to the school; the guidance counselor wanted her. teucer was being suspended for hitting another kid." he pauses, wetting his lips before continuing, "teucer explained to me that he had only hit back because the other kid had thrown the first punch—and that was after he'd endured prolonged teasing. i did my best to get the adults to listen, to believe his side of the story, but it was no use. i was dismissed as the quiet, weird boy who always sat in the back of the class and kept to himself."

with a tight jaw and a hard swallow, childe adds, "that day, we found out the boy teucer hit was the principal’s son."

he exhales deeply, the weight of the memory evident, "after that incident, i worked on being more outgoing, more approachable, more likable. i thought that if i could just make more friends, then perhaps people would be more inclined to believe me, to believe us. after all, there's strength in numbers, isn't there?"

the two of you stop walking altogether and you face him. guilt was etched all over his face, his mouth was downturned, his eyebrows were all furrowed.

“it couldn’t have been your fault, okay? the kid was the principal’s son after all,”

childe adamantly shakes his head, “but i could have helped teucer, if only i was more believable and more trustworthy.”

“look, teucer’s lucky to have you as a brother. you tried standing up for him, but you were really just in an unfair situation,” childe finally meets your eyes, guilt and other emotions swirling behind them.

“you were just a child, and so was teucer. the adults, especially those in positions of authority, were the ones to blame. they should have handled the situation more carefully,” you try your best to comfort him, sending a squeeze to his hand you were holding.

“anyone would be lucky to have you as a family, childe.”

he gives you a wry smile, “is this your way of proposing to me? i just turned 18, you know that right?”

completely taken aback, you raise your available hand to smack him across the chest to which he dramatically exclaims pain at.

“you know what i mean,” you remark, rolling your eyes playfully.

childe teases you, “we’re not even actually dating yet you already want me to be your husband? i should be locked up from women.” he says with his eyes crinkling.

he smiles softly as he gazes at the both of your hands. as you resume the walk home, you feel your grip on his hand grow tighter.
