picture the most stressful situation you can think of.

got it?

what did you imagine? losing a job or loved one? maybe totaling your new car or getting robbed. the possibilities are endless, especially in regard to such a subjective request. normally, when confronted with such a question, jihye might answer with ‘work’ or ‘wedding responsibilities’ or even ‘in-laws’. she led a simple life, one without many problems, or reasons to worry, especially while she was living with her soon-to-be husband who helped issues melt away.

what she couldn’t find, what wasn’t there, wasn’t something her husband could simply console her for. stepping out of the bathroom, she felt ill. realistically the situation was one they’d spoken about and they hadn’t tried to actively avoid, but suddenly she was terrified. there was still so much she wanted to experience, despite her constant pessimism. there was too much in the world to do and see, but now she’d just have to try harder.

jihye sat on the edge of the bed, nausea washing over her as the realization sunk in, but there was still a glimmer of hope. she’d been forgetting that there’d been no test, that she had’t truly confirmed it yet. the walk to the bathroom, 13 steps, was the longest walk she’d ever seemed to take. from beneath the counter, she pulled out a box that would soon dictate her fate and pulled out one of the sterile white tests.

after one struggle to pee, a walk back into the bedroom, and two agonizing minutes, her phone beeped to remind her to go check. this was it. as she opened the door and reached out to the counter, her legs nearly gave out. two pink lines. there was no time before she was at her phone again, tears falling down her cheeks as she stared at the engagement ring on her slim finger.

The sense of desperation that pushes an agitated sigh past his lips unfurls within his chest, his grip on the plastic cup of iced coffee briefly tightening as eyes travel from one end of the cafe to the other. Every table is filled with a patron with only a few seats to spare, and as he strides away from the queue now, he’s a bit perturbed that he has no place to sit. It hadn’t been this way when he had first entered, as they had all been in the line to order their own coffee, but of course some part of him decided that it was still a passable idea.

He supposes that he could just leave, but he still has an hour until he has to be at work, and he certainly doesn’t wish to stock shelves this early in the day. Such a petty excuse, yet he rolls with it as he walks further throughout the cafe, slipping between tables and pushed out chairs filled with people until he spies one with only a single young woman, a bag filling one seat whilst the others remain empty. He doesn’t even contemplate that she may been waiting on someone, or multiple someones, and makes his way over before halting at the tableside and giving a greeting in Japanese, a sheepish smile of sorts tugging at his lips. “Excuse me,” a slight bow follows, and he straightens, “but can I sit here? There’s no where else, really–”

jihye looked a bit out of place in the bustling cafe, all on her own with her laptop open before her. she’d found a sliver of time to work without the distractions of being home. it was too comfortable there, work was only something she groaned about in the mornings, confiding in her pillows. in the cafe the air was thick with conversations that she didn’t need to pay attention to and the smell of coffee alone was enough to keep her focused.

well, focused enough until a soft voice carries into her ears. it’s close enough that she has a hard time brushing it off, and when she looks up, she flashes a pleasant smile. it was only a matter of time as she had been taking up an entire booth by herself. she was sure her fairly cold, concentrated expression had scared away more than one person, but it was a bit comforting that the other had stopped. “ah, feel free to sit,” she nodded, lowering her laptop screen to usher him toward one of the empty seats, “it’s no problem.”

Moment like these were sparse, especially with any spare time they had together. With the whole table littered with textbooks and discarded coffee cups, he found relief in watching Jihye – the doe-eyed girl – across the table.

“I found it quite incredible that I– that we managed to get time for us,” he said, scratching his cheek with a small smile across his lips. “Because time is so consistent, a flow that can’t be disrupted by most things. In truth, I find the theory about time so interesting. Don’t you think so too, Jihye-san?”

those very doe eyes are lost in a text book, somewhere a million miles away. his voice cracked her thoughtful expression and she turned her gaze up to watch him as he spoke, nodding slowly. it was quite rare to have a bit of time to solely dedicate to spending with the other and she quite enjoyed it.

“theories about time? well, i agree it’s very interesting, though i find it incredibly difficult to grasp at times. such an abstract concept, it manages to appear so stable,” she paused, pushing the end of her pen between rosy lips. “what’s stopping us from dismissing time altogether and forming a new system? wouldn’t that be incredible?”
