WEC & IMSA news and rumors round up

A lot of news and rumors have hit both IMSA & WEC in recent weeks. So I thought it'd be nice to make a post gathering an summarizing everything including sources. I'm only sharing what I personally think are reputable sources and I'll try my best to make it clear whether it's a rumor, something said by official sources or actually officially confirmed by people involved (through social media etc.)

BMW, Rahal Letterman Lanigan to split

First reported by racer.com and then taken up by other major news sources. BMW and RLL are set to split following the 2025 IMSA season. This has been confirmed by a BMW spokesperson. Who will replace RLL has not been confirmed but it is currently rumored to be Team WRT, who already run BMW's factory Hypercar effort. DSC has also reported that it is yet to be confirmed whether the WRT effort would be Endurance Cup only or a full season effort.

Lamborghini Temerario GT3 revealed

Lamborghini revealed their new Temerario GT3 which will be the Huracán GT3's successor. The car is set to make its competitive debut at the 2026 12H of Sebring. It will be a gradual rollout with Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer, Rouven Mohr saying if everything goes well they will have 10 cars available. This means customer teams will continue to run the Huracán GT3 sharing the track with the new Temerario.

Genesis Drivers Rumours

Speaking to Sportscar 365 Hyundai Motorsport President Cyril Abiteboul said Genesis is taking a wide approach to driver requirement ahead of their 2026 debut season in WEC. So far Pipo Derani and Andre Lotterer are officially confirmed to be part of developing the car. While both are also expected to take on racing roles. Juncadella who is part of the Genesis backed IDEC Sport LMP2 effort in ELMS, is also heavily rumored to have a seat next season. Mathys Jaubert and Jamie Chadwick, Juncadella's teammates are also part of a driver trajectory programme. According to Sportscar 365, António Félix da Costa, Stoffel Vandoorne and Mathieu Jaminet are among the names that have been linked to a possible move in recent weeks. Abiteboul has also hinted that Genesis is set to reveal fresh names in September “at the latest.”

WEC Hints 42-Car Grid Possible Amid Manufacturer Influx

With Genesis, McLaren and Ford joining the Hypercar class the coming years the WEC grid will have to expand to accommodate the manufacturers. Which is why, WEC has hinted that the total size of the grid could reach 42 cars in the coming years

PONOS Racing enters ALMS in LMP2 next season with the dream of an all-Japanese Le Mans effort

Ponos will join forces with K2 R&D, which has previous experience in LMP2 to compete in ALMS the coming season. This will be with sights on an all-Japanese effort at Le Mans.

Jenson Button will leave Cadillac JOTA after the end of this season

Jenson Button has confirmed to Sportscar 365 he will leave Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA at the end of this season. He plans to step back from a full-time racing career due to shifting priorities and a desire to spend more time with his family. This means it opens up a new seat at the Cadillac factory programme. Who will step in, in his place is unknown. But, it's also expected to be the only change in the line-up with all other drivers staying on for next season.

McLaren reveals their LMDh at Le Mans while key programme details are also revealed

McLaren revealed its LMDh show car which will debut in the 2027 WEC season at the 24H of Le Mans earlier this year. The new McLaren Hypercar, which will run with a Dallara chassis, will be designed internally. United Autosports will run the cars in WEC. James Barclay, current Team Principal of Jaguar TCS Racing in Formula E will join as Team Principal of McLaren United AS, starting in September.

Return to Silverstone in 2027?

According to DSC, WEC is close to signing a deal, which would see Silverstone return to the WEC Calendar for the first time since 2019. There has been talk of expanding the calendar for a while now. But teams voted earlier this year to maintain an eight-race calendar for 2026 due to cost concerns. However, several sources claim a deal is already in place which would see the Silverstone race run before Le Mans.

Change at Peugeot

After signing a contract with Stellantis for a Formula E race seat, Nick Cassidy also looks set to join Peugeot's Hypercar effort. According to The Race, at least one driver is expected to leave Peugeot this winter, and possibly more. Which could also open the door for their current reserve driver Théo Pourchaire. Also reported by The Race earlier this year, Peugeot is working on a new car. But when that will be allowed to debut depends on ACO's decision relating the terms of the extension of the current rule set.

Private Hypercar entries in ALMS starting in 2026/27

Leading up to the 2025 24H of Le Mans the ACO announced that privateer Hypercar entries will be allowed to compete in ALMS, as a Pro-Am class starting with the 2026/27 season.

On Porsche's WEC & IMSA future

According to Sportscar 365: "There has been speculation on a potential altered WeatherTech Championship effort for Porsche amid budget scrutiny, something that is understood to also be impacting fellow German LMDh manufacturer BMW in North America, but to a larger degree with the Munich-based brand." However, Porsche LMDh factory director Urs Kuratle is confident the German manufacturer will continue its works efforts in both IMSA and WEC Kuratle has also confirmed Porsche is in talks with another team that could run a Porsche 963 customer effort in IMSA next year. Sportscar 365 understands the possible new GTP team is an existing Porsche customer.

Lando looks up to see Oscar standing in the doorway to his driver’s room, holding out an old Quadrant t-shirt that’s so worn that he pretty much just wears it to play padel or to get ice in the middle of the night at this point.

The image of it almost makes laughter bubble up in his chest: Oscar trying to be quiet as he rifles through Lando’s suitcase while he sneaks out of his hotel room in the dead of night, tossing aside neutral team kit shirts and designer tops alike to find the raggy old t-shirt that Lando’s worn to death buried in the bottom so that he can take his walk of shame to the hotel room down the hall.

But then, when he gives a touch more thought to it, it makes him go hot all over. Oscar, wearing his shirt. Not just any shirt, but one that specifically from his brand, one that he’s worn a hundred fucking times, one that anyone who knows him well would know is actually his if they saw Oscar walking by in it.

He wonders if the shirt smelled like him when he put it on, notes of his deodorant and aftershave clinging onto the fabric through wash cycles. He wonders if that’s why he chose it.

It makes something possessive rise up in him, even though he’s not meant to be feeling that way about Oscar of all people. Oscar is just the guy he sometimes shags during race weekends, fucking properly before media days and trading hand jobs and blowies when they have to worry about getting in the car. He’s a convenient stopover while Lando can’t be arsed to find a proper girlfriend that sticks. He’s no different from any of the people he takes home from clubs for a night together.

Except, it occurs to Lando that he hasn’t taken anyone home from the clubs in a bit. Not since he and Oscar turned scattered hand jobs in moments of frustration into something a bit more regular.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad for Oscar to start nicking his shirts every day.

“Don’t mind at all. Sorry that you managed to find the one with a hole in one of the pits,” he says casually, even if he feels like anything but.

Oscar shrugs. “I don’t mind it. It’s not as if I was popping in for a press conference. I just needed something because my shirt was, y’know, compromised.”

That’s a nice way of reminding Lando that he absently grabbed it to wipe come off his stomach last night. Fuck, maybe if they have a quickie now, he can make the same mistake all over again and send Oscar out in his t-shirt for the entire team to see.

Except, they’ve got a meeting in ten. Might be a bit too quick of a quickie, even though the thought of Oscar wearing his clothes already has his dick twitching in his trousers.

“Sorry about that, mate,” he tells him. “You’re welcome to borrow anything you’d like. Blanket offer.”

“Thanks.” Oscar’s smile is soft, but his face is entirely unreadable. Lando hasn’t got the faintest idea if he’s feeling as crazy as he is about wearing his clothes.

“You could also just stay next time,” he adds, heart beating in his ears. He thinks he’s done a good job at playing it off as casual rather than a plea.

Oscar pauses for a second, eyes widening a touch as he must realize the implications of it. Waking up together is a line that they haven’t crossed yet— Oscar always sneaks off right after Lando falls asleep. But Lando wants to see what Oscar looks like when the morning light filters through the blinds. He wants to see how messy his hair gets when he gets up in the morning and he wants to kiss him on the mouth before they’ve had a chance to brush their teeth.

“That’d be nice, I reckon,” Oscar says finally. “Maybe tonight, then?”

Lando grins. “Tonight,” he agrees.

He nods. “I’ll be sure to bring my toothbrush.”

Oscar gives him a small wave and disappears back towards his own driver’s room and Lando buries his face in the shirt. It’s got the faintest hint of sweat in it, smells exactly like Oscar after they’ve fucked, obviously. It’s fucking delicious, in a way it shouldn’t be.

Maybe over the break, he’ll invite him back to his apartment. That way, he can actually see Oscar wearing his clothes when they make breakfast together.

One day, maybe they’ll lose track of whose shirt belongs to whom. Maybe it’ll all just be theirs.

The sound of it makes him fucking mad.
