So like can literally anyone else bother to acknowledge that the Dead Souls Daigo dress substory fucking sucks on so many levels or is the sexual harassment and transmisogyny and homophobic stereotypes suddenly okay when the "pathetic loser character" (per much of the fandom's opinion) is the butt of the joke or something
#yakuza dead souls#daigo dojima#goro majima#rent-lowering gunshots#i think people genuinely just see Daigo In Drag and/or Confirmed Gay Majima and/or Drag Mother Majima (post-goromi)#and then that's their primary takeaway#majima took advantage of life or death circumstances to put a man through transmisogynistic humiliation rituals hashtag e could save them#majima wanted a kiss and a “bl-” from a man hashtag queer icon who cares if it's sexual harassment#(he only wanted the kiss but the localization felt the need to play up the predatory aspects even more)#just sucks all around#i want to note interpreting it that way is distinct from reinterpreting it that way while addressing the issues#but idk. i don't want to reinterpret it#i think it's fine to do so but whichever route you take you end up with a “rehabilitated” majima#and it feels disingenuous on some level for that to be the dominant vision in the fandom

Well...
I do love Majima's sex positivity speech during the Minato Girl's subplot in PYIH, but I can't help but think he maybe wouldn't be saying quite the same things without the amnesia. Maybe a little in the present day, but definitely during the 90's-early 2000's era.
90's-00's Majima would probably think that kinky, freaky sex is something that only bad nasty pervert people have. Good people have nice, soft, cute vanilla sex, because they love and care about each other. If you want kinky freak sex, it's probably because you care more about the sex than the person you want to have it with. Because you're a nasty freak pervert.

Could the same thing have happened to Majima? If Sera were to propose a dissolution, I would think Shimano would be against it, and Majima backing him would be in line with what's expected of him as captain. Shishido, on the other hand, betrays and usurps Watase and Tsuruno, acting against what's expected of him as lieutenant to join forces with his abuser and their enemy. Watase's guard dog bit him, as Akame put it. Majima's actions in that scenario would be the "safe bet," relatively speaking, while Shishido's were a life-altering gamble.
Even if Shimano were for the dissolution and Majima were to betray him, there's no one Majima could turn to who's abused him more than Shimano. I think that's a big difference in terms of the weight it holds when their actions and/or motivations align with their abusers, too: Majima's "savior" and abuser are the same person, while Shishido's "savior" (or "saviors") and abuser not only aren't, but are themselves in oppositiion.
one thing I really like about gaiden is that the obvious Shishido-Majima parallels (the hannya mask, the knife, the fixation on Kiryu, the survival of the fittest mentality) work so well to flesh out why Majima continued to stick by Shimano

like Majima, Shishido is abused physically, emotionally, and likely sexually by the guy he ultimately sides with, because it's better to cling to the life he feels comfortable in--one ruled by violence and the structure provided by the yakuza--than to break away from the abuse and have to face a directionless existence. better the devil you know, and all that. they both believe they're not suited for civilian life, and they're likely right about that. Shishido understands the rules of the yakuza, he knows his role, he has power and influence and his fists can carry him to the top. monsters like Nishitani III are just a necessity in that line of business, and can even be beneficial to someone who can endure them--and survival is something both men pride themselves on
those same feelings were certainly an inference that could be made about Majima's loyalty to his abuser prior to gaiden, but it's nice to have it spelled out and explored further. we really don't get to see much from Majima on his exact feelings, but Shishido tries to punch his into Kiryu and I really enjoyed seeing that
