Dev. Log #1 - 02.13.2020 // Camera Fun Time
So hi no one can see this yet, but I wanted to make a post just to get this formatting down and start documenting because the game’s already come along a decent ways. Log is under read more.
So like right now I’m still working on just creating areas and NPCs and just content in general, and tonight I made the first draft of the finalized polaroids:
These are items you can get a specific locations by using the Camera (gifted by Luna) at certain locations. I want there to be 15 total but only 10 required, and a chance that they can fail, and drop a unique “failed” polaroid, based on how the camera can be inconsistent in real life.
I don’t quite know the percentage but I’d like it somewhere between 50% and 80% success rate, I’m gonna be testing out with 66.6% (2/3) personally.
My goal for the project longterm is to eventually have full custom spriteart for everything, and these are a middleground at the moment between the engine-default resources, and what I want at the end of the day. I’ll probably revisit these as the game progresses but I just wanted to get a sketch down.
Fun fact is that the first one is actually a redraw! I did this earlier draft a week or two ago when I was testing the Camera so I could finish designing the mechanic, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. I still don’t even know if I like how the new one came out, the mountain one looks good though.
Now, to pivot I want to talk about the item interface. So at the moment, I have obtained a plugin that lets me use these pictures, and redesigns the items screen to actually be useful for a game more like mine.
I’m trying to get rid of the item name on the right text box, and the “Max HP Heal”, etc. etc on the middle box as I don’t really need either. But I want to like try and have the text at the top inside the box next to it instead, or something like that. Just to declutter this a bit because it’s really noisy.
I need to get rid of the “Weapon”, “Armor”, and “Key Item” menus as well just because I have no use for all of them, I’d like to make subcategories but that will come in time.
To circle back around, I might as well show how the camera system works at the moment. So, what you do is when you see a particular point of interest, you walk up to it, and the game will prompt you with a cinematic view.
(Pardon the text spacing, looks like I did forget something.)
But anyways, once here, if you haven’t taken the photo already, it prompts you to. You can take the photo and have a chance of failing it, or choose not to.
(Once again, line spacing, and the text is going to be edited slightly.)
If it succeeds, you get the item as normal (seen above). If it doesn’t, you get the failed version.
So, yeah! I really don’t know what else to put here as this is so early still, but I wanted to at least document one item just so I can show people what I’m working on. This is one item for one character, and I plan to give each of the 19 main characters an item each, most won’t be as in-depth as the camera, but I’d like to at least make it content-rich. Oh! One more thing before we go...
There are NPCs that can ask you to take photos of them, and if you have the camera, you get money for it with no penalty (despite the text mentioning film cost), just a little bonus option for going out of your way to interact with things!
And of course, the camera isn’t required for these, it’s merely a way to earn extra money doing it! If you don’t have the camera, the following dialogue occurs and you don’t get paid. No harm no foul.
Ok, that’s all for now. Thank you for reading if you made it this far! If you have any feedback on how it works or what you’d like to see, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
