just having the stark realization that the failed act of rebellion was 24 years before katniss volunteered. that begs the question of whether or not there were more attempts. did johanna suffer the same fate as haymitch? did the capitol lie and say she was hidden the entirety of her games because she was given a similar (failed) assignment from beetee? did they have to erase countless hours of footage? edit things to make it seem like she was never where she actually was, simply hidden away from the chaos? how many mockingjay figures did they cycle through before landing on katniss? how many did they cycle through before the revolution actually began?

ooh Haymitch whose dad died in a mining accident leaving himself, his mother, and a little sister, Haymitch who brings in extra income by working in the woods, and sells to the Peacekeepers and just wants to spend the afternoon after the Reaping hanging out with someone he likes, just like Katniss, except where Katniss' mother barely did anything due to her trauma, Haymitch's mother held her family together and ensured they did what they had to do to keep their heads above water.

forever thinking about the parallels between the haymitch/maysilee friendship and the katniss/rue friendship. arena alliances, only days-long and doomed to fail. haymitch and katniss - idealists despite their hard, gruff, exteriors - refusing to accept the temporary reality of the alliance. haymitch running for maysilee without thinking twice despite their broken alliance. katniss burying rue in flowers. both of them holding their ally's hand as they die. both their stories inherently disproving snow's thesis about the games being an exercise in selfishness. both their stories bridging panem's social divides (a seam boy and a town girl. two girls from different districts). the mockingjay pin connecting the fiftieth arena to the seventy-fourth.

The devastating parallel of Haymitch not being reaped, he was just taken because he was trying to protect the girl he loved. And the next time he’s reaped he’s replaced by a boy trying to do the same thing.

haymitch sending katniss the bread from 11 in the aftermath of rue’s death hits so much harder with the knowledge that mags sent him the coffee and strawberry ice cream after maysilee died

he was inviting her to cry to him the same way that mags had for him, the same way katniss does in mockingjay
