Posted this on twitter about "AI art" I'm not on tumblr very often but I felt like putting this here too
I truly think that anyone who is using AI generators to ‘create art’ for them is fundamentally misunderstanding the purpose of art and why people create art in the first place. Art is not all about this end product.
Sure, that’s part of the reason people make art is to see their final artwork completed, but that’s only part of it.
If you talk to artists of any kind, professional artists who support themselves through their art, artists who work on the weekends, students, children, anyone who has so much as drawn a line. The joy of art doesn’t happen when there is simply a finished artwork in front of them.
It happens during the entire course of making art. From the initial idea to the starting phases, redos, starting over, discovering new ideas, revisiting the same concept years later, to finishing it. It is about the process.
You don’t learn anything from artwork being finished instantly. It is through the process of making artwork that you learn, your skills grow, your knowledge of art and technique become stronger, and you learn about yourself as well.
When I’m talking to artists, the first thing I always want to know is about their process, how did they come up with the idea, how did they decide on colors, the materials they used, how did it change?
This is what ‘AI art’ is fundamentally missing. There is no process. There is nothing to learn from. There is only a prompt entered into a box and then there is a finished product. Art is given meaning through that process of creation and creativity. AI is robbing that from you.
Art is fundamental to humanity, we have been creating art as long as we have existed. The cave paintings are evidence of this. Art and creating is ingrained into us. If it didn’t matter, we still wouldn’t be making and creating art so many years later.
You can’t have art without a process. It becomes meaningless. Why would I care about art that someone couldn’t have even bothered to have created themselves?
