Interestingly, I saw a similar post a few months ago. It's about "Why is Volo more reviled than Cyrus or other villains (is he?), even though Volo wanted a better world without pain unlike selfish Cyrus". I don't know if that post is the beginning of this comparison. Anyway the situation is similar.
I don't agree with the refutation that Cyrus is more morally superior to Volo, but I can see why randos get mad. Because both sides did same things to each other. I mean, didn't Volo act solely for himself? Didn't Cyrus want a better world without pain? Cyrus explains that the reason why he create a new world just for his justice is that he cannot create a perfect world without doing this. He thinks he should leave only logic in the world to remove conflict, but no one agreed. As if no one agreed with Volo, who believe removing everyone to make a better wolrd. They both wanted a better world, but they also have a selfish side just for their own justice.
And now, I understand what causes people to make these comparisons, and what they want to convey through this. They feel Volo is portrayed as more evil than he really is in the fandom. So we have to talk about the good side of him. But this kind of false comparison is not the good way.
Yes, the problems that Volo fans feel are similar to the problems that Cyrus fans have had for a long time. They've been in hell since DPPt was released, and now it looks like Volo fans have been added here as well. But even during the DPPt era, there were some people can discussing Cyrus' good side. I think we can do the same thing for Volo too, without any issue. True good side does not require comparison and it can be praised on its own.
(I feel really strange about randos' argument. I doubt they understood the character correctly. At least all Cyrus fans I saw like Pt)
Me: I believe Volo's motivations for a better world being built upon emotion is endearing to his character, and serves as an interesting contrast to Cyrus's desire for a world without spirit solely for himself. I also think it suggests Volo truly does have kindness and compassion in his heart.
Some Randos: So you hate Cyrus, then? You think he doesn't have any redeeming qualities?! Here's several essays that prove Volo is a sociopath and Cyrus is actually morally superior!! (And Platinum got his character wrong!!)
You say your blorbo is being misunderstood? Welcome to hell, I've been here since LA was released.
