mark lee calls you dude like it's your actual name and it's honestly starting to mess with your head. not just the word itself, but the way he says it; so casually and seemingly meaningless, as if you're just another one of his friends. except he doesn't treat you like just another friend, does he?

he shows up at your apartment with coffee and your favorite pastry — your usual, stays up until the sun rises as he helps you with assignments he doesn't quite understand, lets you wear his hoodies until they smell more like you than him.

“dude, you're gonna ace this exam," he said last week while quizzing you for the third hour straight, and you wanted to grab him by the shoulders and ask why he cares so much if you're just his dude.

the mixed signals make you question everything. because mark is sweet and attentive, remembering every little thing you tell him, but then he goes around and calls you dude.

you've started paying attention to how he talks to other people and much to your dismay, he doesn't call anyone else dude as much as he calls you that. it's just you, it’s always been you, and you can't figure out if that makes it better or worse. it’s almost cruel, the way your name slips from his mouth less often than dude does.

sometimes you catch him looking at you like he wants to say something else, something that starts with a different word entirely, but then he seems to catch himself and out comes another "dude" like clockwork.

last month he almost kissed you after a party, both of you drunk on the way the moonlight made everything feel possible, but right when you thought he might finally do it he pulled back to say "dude, we should get you home," shattering the moment like glass.

what you don't know is that mark has been in love with you since month two of your friendship and his habit of calling you dude started from panic.

he'd almost called you baby while you were both studying in the library, the word right there on his tongue, and he'd choked it back so hard he started coughing. now he's stuck in this horrible pattern where every time he wants to call you something more endearing, like you deserve, dude comes out instead by some kind of emotional muscle memory.

he lies awake thinking about how your face changes when he says it, every piece of hope flickers in your eyes for just a second before you smile and pretend it doesn't hurt. mark knows he's hurting you and he hates himself for it, but he's terrified that if he stops calling you dude and lets himself say what he really means, you'll realize how pathetic he is and leave him with nothing.
