Textual Analysis - ADS A03
I chose Little Baby's Ice Cream " This is A Special Time " and Nyahahakbkxjbcjhishdishlsab@!!!! Basta RC Cola! as my two commercials.
Little Baby's Ice Cream "This is A Special Time" focuses their visuals in terms of the lighting with a frontal lighting and they chose a very limited monochrome color palette. It had a very clean, crisp, and bold black background. They did a close-up shot with only one angle which was an eye level angle so that it would keep the viewers’ attention focused. In terms of sound effects they added a very soft but not too loud sound effects of an ice cream truck which wouldn't interfere with the voice over of the narrator. Each version of the voice over was very different in terms of phrasing, subject, and pacing. It also has mixed and matched sentences, half sentences, and single words. It resulted in an odd rhythm and a combination of words that heightens the atmosphere. The director Doug Garth Williams created this message. He states that he often thinks about confounding expectations when creating his works. He used a very strange concept of advertising an ice cream using a tight budget. Some viewers might think it’s a creepy video from the dark web because of how odd it looks, especially the actor who was just staring and eating the cream from their head and staring wide at the camera. Some might feel disgusted while watching it and it would make them not want to buy or eat ice cream anymore. It shows that people have different concepts of advertising things and it would make it stand out more because when people see things that are done differently, it would catch their attention. Usually ice cream comes complete with its own implicit branding. We would usually think of childhood, summer days, innocence and family. The director turned all that on its head. He made a very unusual and somewhat disturbing commercial and his pre-existing associations with ice cream provide the perfect context to amplify those aspects even more. That's the reason it's been so successful. The message that was being sent was so people would be more open to see that there are pretty much different ways of advertising a product. My insights about the content's message was that it made me change on how I view advertising should be done and that it can be done in an odd manner. I will accept the message of this media because this just shows that even if it’s odd, it will still get the attention of the viewers whether they take it seriously or not.
Nyahahakbkxjbcjhishdishlsab@!!!! Basta RC Cola! focuses their visuals in terms of lighting using hard/harsh lighting. They used a variety of angles and shot types, such as medium close-up , medium, close-up, medium long, and macro shots taken from eye level, ground level, shoulder level, and over the shoulder angle. In terms of sound, they added highly dramatic music to the commercial to heighten the drama and give viewers the impression that they are watching a soap opera. They chose sentences that are frequently used in cliche storylines that are included in many Philippine dramas, which would definitely attract the audience's attention. The film's director, Marius Talampas, and the independent production company Gigil created this message. In order to provide "fresh insight into the content," Gigil hired a director who isn't very "commercial." Dionie Tañada was the writer of the commercial, which lasted 1 minute, 37 seconds. The commercial was created to mimic local Philippine soap opera cliches. Here, adoption is a common theme in telenovelas, which are immensely popular. They reasoned that it would be clever to deceive us into thinking we were watching a soap opera, which would later turn out to be something quite different. Because of the glasses on his back, the son in the commercial realizes that he is not related to his parents, which the mother then proves by revealing that she also has an RC Cola bottle inside her head. People could be taken aback by the sudden removal of the mother's head, which reveals a bottle of RC Cola and the four glasses on the boy's back. Some viewers might also be confused by the commercial's message and find it absurd. This advertisement aims to be strange overall. They made the commercial specifically for younger audiences in the hopes that it will grab their interest, which it did. They were aware that the best creative technique for engaging a younger audience was comedy. Gen Z people are drawn to work that is illogical, passionate, and wild. Since this kind of job isn't often seen on a regular basis in the Philippines, they saw this as a major change. Despite having many rivals in the soft drink industry, they were able to produce a commercial that would move people, which was the message being sent. My insight of the content's message was that creating bizarre advertisements would truly attract the attention of viewers, regardless of whether you were promoting a small business or facing tough competition. I'll accept the commercial's message since it helped me realize that even if your work appears absurd, people will still appreciate it. We are now gradually getting exposed to advertisements that are completely unusual.

Textual Analysis - ADS (04)
The first ad I chose is the downy antibac ad. Here is the youtube link to the ad: https://youtu.be/mAP_WbYwUVc
The phrase "99.9% antibac protection" was utilized in this advertisement since it worked with the brand safeguard. You'll see that only the downy antibac safeguard uses 99.9% compared to other downy variants since the safeguard purchased and owns the line. This implies that other cleaning products cannot use this line since the safeguard company may bring legal action against them. You'll notice that the video's introduction uses the color green for the section about odors and germs. They chose the color green because it is often associated with disgust, like in the movie Inside Out. Additionally, the young child made a puking expression to emphasize how foul-smelling the garment is due to the germs. They used a very dark and gloomy background to emphasize the sadness and concern of the mother about the clothes that are smelling bad because she can't dry them outside due to the bad weather. Dark and gloomy backgrounds are often used when there are sad scenes in drama movies. So it is fitting that they used that kind of background in that particular scene. On other hand, they used bright and luminous lighting when they introduced the product. Light is a symbol of hope, so they are implying that the product will solve the problem. In addition, the mother's voice is much softer than the voice introducing the brand. A louder voice will appeal to the audience as energetic and lively, so if the mother's voice is loud, it won't appeal to the audience that the mother is sad. After using the product, you will notice that they added flowers, and the lighting is not dark anymore. The whole family is also smiling, which means that they are happy and contended. The flowers added gave it a much fresher and cozier vibe which I think is great when promoting a fabric softener.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the director of the downy antibac advertisement. The constant change of lighting and sound effects attracted my attention. I often see this on television, so when I saw the activity, I immediately knew what to choose for the first advertisement. I feel like Filipinos will understand it similarly to me because the Philippines is like the home of drama movies and we often see this kind of theme. The lifestyle that's shown is the housewife who takes care of the child and the house chores would not need to worry about the clothes smelling bad when dry indoors. The husband who works will also be happy when he comes home with clothes smelling fragrant. The purpose of the message is to let other housewives know that they can use the downy antibac when it's raining to avoid having foul-smelling clothes. I am amazed by how much thought they put into this advertisement. The casted actors also fit their roles. I will accept the message of this advertisement because it is family-friendly and there are no offensive messages in it.
The second ad I choose is Master: ang sikreto ng mga gwapo https://youtu.be/NQ7KD7LkDSg The guy acting cool while walking in the middle of the campus at the beginning of the video is so funny. The humorous aspects of the video came from the background music and his exaggerated expressions and poses. My only problem is the judgemental faces the girls on their campus made just because of the pimple on his face. Acne's a sensitive topic and is insecurity of a lot of people, so I think they should be careful when advertising skincare products, especially products made specifically for acne. I also didn't like the scene where the girl pointed out the guy's acne because I know and have experienced it firsthand. Moving on to the lighting, I like how they used a black background mixed with gold lighting when introducing the product. It made them look more mature and manly which can be appealing to the male audience, their target market.
The Master Philippines created this advertisement. The setting they chose is at school, and gave the actors the role of a Cassanova in the school while the girls are admiring them from afar while playing the background sound "mahirap ang maging gwapo." This caught my attention because I am a student and still not over the school love story phase. Some people might not find the first scene as offensive as I do, and it's okay because not all people have the same experience and thoughts. I just don't like the thought that their audience would feel the need to buy this product out of obligation because their insecurity is being pointed out and made fun of. The message that's being sent by the company is that if you use master, your face will be cleaner, and it might help reduce your pimples. Your face will be much more handsome with no acne like James Reid, and the girls will fawn over you. This message is being sent so that guys who suffer from acne will buy this product in hopes of reducing their acne.
The visuals, sound, setting, and theme have a lot of potentials, but the way they executed it was just not for me. The advertisement was published around six years ago, so I understand that they were not sensitive and aware of how they might trigger a sensitive insecurity in the audience. I would have to reject the message of the advertisement because it is on television and other media. They also have a large audience, which means they should have been much more cautious and done several checks before publishing it. They should also know that anything you post online can not be taken down and will remain there for a lifetime.

Media and Information Literacy B10
Like many people, media is a huge part of my daily life. My favorite media by far would be YouTube. I just love how easy it is for me to browse through videos and the efficiency of it to provide me with content that fits my interests is what I love so much about it. YouTube is one of the most significant sources of information that helps me in improving my skills. I have been using it since I was a kid. The number of videos I watch on YouTube has increased over time. Every day, I spend about two to five hours watching videos for entertainment and continuously learning new stuff.
The kinds of media that I am familiar with are print media, broadcast media, and social media. First is print media. The oldest media in the form of newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and other printed material. It was the only form of entertainment available in the 80s and 90s. For all varieties of political, social, entertaining, and educational news, people relied on various print news sources. Second, broadcasting media. This type of media is used to broadcast information about events or happenings around the world. For example, a radio station can broadcast live news from the Philippines to its audience. In addition, television stations can broadcast local news to their audiences. The third is social media platforms. These are platforms that allow users to share information with others through the internet and other social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. I think the most powerful of them all is social media because they have many advantages over traditional forms of media. It allows you to stay connected with people who are far away from you. This is one of the main reasons why people use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The influence of media has an impact on many aspects of a person including voting, personal views and beliefs, and shifting a person’s understanding of a certain topic as a result of false information. I believe that the benefit of media is that people have access to the most recent news at their fingertips. The disadvantage of media, in my opinion, is that people spend far too much time on the internet watching or binging shows. Some media topics are inappropriate for children; restricting access to content can be hard for parents. Some television shows and social media can be extremely addictive to most children and adults. Some people attempt stunts that have been shown in the media, resulting in severe injuries.
I believe that media and information literacy is important because they help people understand the messages that are being conveyed to them. My expectation for this subject is that it will be slightly challenging but also enjoyable for me. I hope that I will be able to understand the lessons and I will do my best to finish the activities and tasks assigned to me. I don’t have a particular question regarding media that I would like to be discussed in class.

Media and Information Literacy 04
My favorite media is Tiktok. Tiktok is an app where people can post videos of themselves dancing, singing, talking, literally anything but nothing inappropriate. I like Tiktok because it is entertaining. Since I have a short attention span and am easily distracted, I like Tiktok because the videos are short and only limited to three minutes. Tiktok is also informational since professional doctors, trainers, and dietitians advise people and tell them what to do and not to do. Like in other media, fake news is also circulating on Tiktok, so you should also be careful. I spend around five hours watching Tiktok per day. I started using Tiktok in December of 2019 up until now.
There are three types of media: print media, broadcasting media, and internet media. These media all disseminate information to people around the world. First, the print media involves newspapers, magazines, and books. They contain words and images. Broadcasting media involves audio and videos like television, radio, and movies. Lastly, internet media includes websites, apps, and social networks. They all provide information in the form of video, text, and audio. Some apps like email and messenger can even send messages to other people. Internet media has all you need, so I think it is the most powerful. Media has a great impact on our lives because it can make us aware of things that are happening around the world. The advantage of media is it is very informational which can help students with their education and adults with their work. People can promote their products and also improve them through the opinions of the people. Media can also keep us entertained by watching funny videos like vines. The disadvantage of media is you could get addicted and ignore your responsibilities or work. People can also get scammed because of fake news or some people disguising themselves as someone they are not. Cyberbullying is also one of the disadvantages of media, this involves saying mean things and posting inappropriate pictures of someone without their consent.
The difference in media between the United States of America and the Philippines is the media in the USA are more advance than in the Philippines. For example, Disney Plus, up until now, we still don't have it here in the Philippines. The USA is also earlier to have much-advanced technology like PS5, compared to the Philippines, people have to wait for months.
I think media and information literacy are necessary because media is very powerful and it can make your life easier or harder. So people using media needs to be very careful. They should be a good decision maker and know where to allocate or use the information they acquired through media. People should also be wary of scammers and fake news. Since the media is evolving, it is much easier for people to disguise and con someone and even hack through your account. So instead of taking advantage of advanced technology and using it for bad purposes like bullying someone or spreading fake news on the internet, we should give proper feedback without being unnecessarily mean and transmit informational and educational information. My expectations in this class are to be fun and have fewer essays and more class activities. I would also like to learn more about media to use it extensively for my convenience and to be updated of my surroundings.

Media and information Literacy 03
My favorite media medium is social media. It has a huge impact on people because it's accessible to everyone, makes it simple to communicate with others, and allows you to freely express your own opinion about a certain issue or topic. The benefit to me is that I learn more about global issues and get to witness ones that aren't frequently covered in the media. I have been using social media since I was young since, and I typically spend 12 hours daily because I was exposed to technology growing up. Print media, broadcast media, and the internet are the several media types that I am familiar with. The internet is the most powerful media in my opinion because it's so simple to post something, whether you're looking for a missing person or browsing for a video explaining a lesson you didn't understand in school. You can also stay in touch with your friends and family at anytime and anywhere.
The advantages of media to us include making our lives easier, making communication with others faster and more accessible, and the fact that everything around us would be different without media. Because certain media may contain some of our personal information that hackers may access and track our whereabouts with, one of the disadvantages of media is that it may put us at risk. In the media, posers and scammers are common, and occasionally we run across some of them. Television is a popular for news, sports, entertainment, and advertising. Cable television is a system where television shows are delivered to subscribers' television sets via cable as opposed to a broadcast signal. The newspaper is often published daily, weekly, or at other regular intervals that offers news, opinions, features, and other material of public interest. Magazines are publications with articles and images that often focus on a specific subject or specific area of interest. The method by which people interact with one another through the creation, sharing, and/or exchange of information and ideas in digital communities and networks is referred to as social media. People in both countries value freedom of speech, which is similar to how the media in the Philippines and the United States operate. Nowadays, people would post on social media about something that had happened to them or to someone else that they wanted other people to know about. This also contributes to the growth of a supportive community on social media. Another similarity is that people commonly discuss problems from the past because they want others to learn from past mistakes or to see what a particular person has been doing wrong. The difference between the two nations is that the Philippines uses the media to disseminate false information, particularly during the recent election, whereas the United States uses it to advocate for others about political issues.
It's best to understand the history and basic details of how media was established as well as how people would find information and communicate when media wasn't very advanced at the time, in my opinion, because media may improve and change more as we get older. If we could learn more about how to use the media, it would also make our lives better. I don't have any big expectations in this class; as long as it's entertaining and not boring, everything will be fine. There are no media-related questions that I would like to bring up in class.

Media and Information Literacy (23)
My favorite source of media is any type of media that plays music such as Spotify, YouTube Music, or just the music player on my phone. I often use music to pass the time and I find it relaxing no matter what situation I'm in.
I've been using apps like these since I got my first phone at age 12 but I've been addicted to music -specifically 90s music- since my dad gave me his old music player at 4 years old.
Other than music I know the famous types of media, print and news media, internet media like YouTube and Facebook, and old school live broadcasting media like TV and Radio.
Obviously, to someone like me social media is the most impactful type. It just has a more widespread audience and user-base now. It's the go to media even for the other types of media I listed. You can find that they all have their own websites and YouTube channels now.
Our country has most of the media present in other countries. We have news sites and channels like GMA, TV Patrol, CNN Philippines, and much more. We have our own entertainment studio for movies and TV, made in the Philippines, with Channel 5 and ABS-CBN.
I think that the media in the U.S. definitely has a higher budget. Just one look at their movies, shows, and journalism opportunities can tell you that. This is obviously due to the fact that we're a struggling third-world country and they are living in the "American Dream".
Media and Information Literacy is necessary to ensure that you don't get sucked into a misuse of media. From fake news to scams, a person who is well-versed in Media and Info Literacy will have a higher chance of avoiding these.
I don't really have any questions or high expectations when it comes to class. I've known media since I was born so I have learned much about it through both good and bad experiences. I guess I just expect to do the best I can to ace the class.
