Someone once compared me to a dragonite and I was extremely offended because I think they look incredibly dopey (Dragonair however is one of my faves forever, and if I had one in real life I'd like to never evolve it) Point is, this short made me feel different. I just kind of love how reformation in Steven Universe is this beautiful metaphorical and also literal rebirth of characters. Previously for the previous reformations, they seemed to be good, in a way necessary. Like, something terrible happened, and they needed to take stock of their situation and refocus their energy. But like, with this recent Amethyst rebirth, it felt more out of nowhere, kind of depressing in a way, and sort of shameful. Like, Idk, When I fail at something once, and then get back up again, its applauded as not letting one bad event get me down. But when you keep hitting your bottom repeatedly, it’s seen as a pattern, a problem, not like you can actually ever fix yourself because you’re just broken. 

“You can do anything you want to Amethyst!” is a thing that resonated, just because the constant endorsement that all that is holding you back is you, is something that puts more pressure on you and makes you feel like you must just be shit. But she’s right. She is stunted, and it is hard to feel like you’re capable of anything when you have such a clear disadvantage. But that shouldn’t define you. 

Steven Vs. Amethyst may not have been a plot-heavy episode, but it was some of the best character development in AGES. I kinda wanted to cry.

Over the Garden Wall Process by Steven P Hughes Inspired by the miniseries Over the Garden Wall

I previously posted this illustration (with the title), and thought I’d share the version without it, as well as the initial sketch. Plus, since this image is 20″x30″ I thought I’d include a couple closeups. 

Another thing worth sharing is that I used - almost exclusively - @kyletwebster‘s photoshop brushes to create this; the new spatter brushes in particular really helped shape the mood and atmosphere of the image.
