a yutamaki fic based on the leaks of Gege’s new manga Modulo, written from the point of view of their granddaughter. this is an extended version of my 150 word writing assignment lmao. posting it here bc i just sent my application for an ao3 invitation.

Running, I pulled Granddad across the grass. He stops, as he catches the sight of Grandma, pushing my brother on the swing. They both were laughing so sweetly at each other and it planted the sweetest smile on Granddad’s face. When suddenly, everything stops. The wind was frozen, the sky felt heavy, and Grandma fell to the ground.

Granddad ran immediately to her, letting go of mine, he held her with shaking hands. Normally, Grandma would’ve been smiling at him, but this time she couldn’t. She only tried to caress his hand holding her like she always does, and managed to call him by the nickname she made for him, “Old bean…”, before closing her eyes. My brother was crying but things hadn't fully registered to me yet, until I felt the rain on my shoulders.

Just as the rain started pouring, the maids came in panic. Everyone hurriedly brought Grandma to the Jujutsu Hospital but it was already too late. Granddad never let go of her, not in the ambulance, not while running her to the hospital room, and definitely not after her heartbeat was gone. My brother wouldn’t stop crying, my tears started flowing, the maids were holding each other up, and Granddad was frozen. 

When we were finally allowed inside the hospital room, Granddad went to hold Grandma’s right hand with both his hands. They were the sweetest old couple. It was the first time I ever saw Granddad make that face— as if his heart stopped beating too. And it did. Maybe Granddad did die that day as well, because he couldn’t live without her.

Granddad grew weaker and weaker, day by day, since then. Everyone was worried as he stopped properly eating his meals. He also stayed sitting at the terrace by the backyard most times. I wish I knew better how I could’ve been there for him. The Granddad who runs with me, dances with me, is no longer there. The house turned gloomy. Until one day, we held a funeral for him too. It didn’t take long. Only two weeks since Grandma passed.
