Do you mind terribly if I borrow this idea?
My vampires CAN walk into the sunlight but doing so would reveal what they would look like if they aged normally
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Younger vampires don’t have much to worry about but older vamps have reason to avoid sunlight as they age. They are still immortal, but their aged, sunlit selves are significantly weaker than their non-sunlit forms. Vamps over 100 years old run the risk of crumpling over, fully immobile, but still conscious

“It’s still rather dark… do you have a light?”
“I can cast a light spell on the lantern.”
Amaryllis offered, before smirking knowingly.
“I take it you had something else in mind?”
“As a matter of fact…”
With a wave of his hand, Hiroshi summoned wisps of turquoise foxfire to help them see through the fog and early morning darkness.
‘Heehee! We look like a ghost carriage now!’
He thought gleefully, imagining what passersby would think.
He turned back to Amaryllis, who held out the reigns to him.
“Uh…”
“What’s the matter, Lord Green? Don’t you know how to drive a carriage?”
“… is it anything like driving a car?”
The woman next to him looked puzzled.
“What is… a car?”
“It’s a sort of metal, horseless carriage we use in my old world…”
At her further confused expression, he just sighed.
“Nevermind. You can drive. I can take over if you get tired.”
“How kind of you, my lord. But how about you take the reins for a while? I can teach you.”
“Oh, that’s fine. You don’t have to-“
“I insist.”
She said sternly.
“…okay.”
He conceded reluctantly, not sure if he liked the amount of sass in her tone.

Excerpt:
“Pleasure doing business with you.”
Though a smidge hesitant, Hiroshi reached out and shook the Duke’s hand.
Blue-white foxfire wreathed around their enclasped hands for a moment, finalizing their contract with each other.
“Same here.”

Cover art for Book 1, Ch 24
I don’t really have a good excerpt this time, so I’ll just give a quick summary.
The characters celebrate the pagan festival of Mabon by the children going apple picking and then everyone making stuff with said apples.

Cover art for Ch 23: Avery Twist
Excerpt:
Once back outside, he had to duck into the shadow of the building to avoid the lantern light of the patrolling guard.
He was grumbling something about feral cats, which made Avery smile in mirth.

Cover art for Ch 22
Excerpt:
“Well, I should probably be off with these. Will you be returning to the Inn today?”
The copper haired girl asked as she hefted the box full of plates.
“I think I might. Do you need help with that?”
“No, I’ll be alright. I appreciate the thought, though.”
“No, I insist. At least let me make them easier to carry. [Lightweight Cargo].”
He pointed his staff at the plates, and as Erica held them she could feel them get lighter.
“They’re light as apples now! Thank you, Doctor!”
“It’s no trouble. See you later, Erica.”
“See you later!”

a feel like the new generation of fanfic readers NEED to understand that clicking on a fic (interaction) does nothing. ao3 has no algorithm. your private discord discussions of fic do not reach the authors. if you do not actively engage with writers they will stop posting. this isn’t social media this is community.

Cover art for Book 1, Ch 21
Excerpt:
As he looked inside, he had to double take as he saw multiple utensils and empty pots floating in midair, moving erratically yet not colliding with anything.
In the middle of this chaos stood Richter, trying to comfort his visibly upset daughter, a damp and dirtied rag in one hand and his wand in the other.
The red haired man looked up to see Hiroshi in the doorway.
“Close the door.”
“What happened in here?”
Instead of answering right away, Richter patted his daughter on the shoulder before approaching the intruder.
He looked like he wanted to tell him to leave, but then closed his eyes as he put his wand behind his ear.
“This happens sometimes when she gets upset. I trust you, young man, not to tell anyone. Please make sure she calms down. I’ll go deal with the… difficult guest.”
Richter said regretfully as he walked past the confused fox, dodging a stray ladle, to the door.
While Richter walked out, Hiroshi stepped further into the kitchen while the door closed again.
Once they were alone in the kitchen together for a moment, Erica turned to face him. Her tear stained face was red with embarrassment.
“I… I’m sorry you had to see this. I haven’t had a very good day.”
She gestured to the floating objects.
She sniffled, trying to breath and wipe her tears away to calm down.
Slowly, the objects descended until they fell to the floor and countertops with a gentle clatter.
Hiroshi involuntarily winced as he heard some plates break.

Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!

Cover art for Book 1, Ch 19
Excerpt:
He breathed heavily as he leaned against the last archway.
Looking up, he stopped short as he saw a structure he’d only heard of in children’s tales and superstitions.
“Is that…?”
Before him stood the Ancient Castle, its crumbling stone held together with thick vegetation, trees replacing some of the broken columns he could see from the outside.
He never thought he’d actually get to see it.
A sharp whistle drew his attention away from the beautiful sight, his gaze moving directly above him.
Aron couldn’t help the gasp that escaped his lips when he saw the robed figure sitting up there, looking down at him like a disapproving parent.
The sun shone just behind the figure, silhouetting their frame, making Aron squint as he tried to get a good look.
He could make out animal ears and a large tail, or perhaps multiple tails, before he felt a sharp pain in his neck and everything suddenly went black.

Cover art for Book 1, Chapter 18
Excerpt:
Within this hidden chamber was what looked like a small building.
Stepping inside, he again ignited his foxfire to see. It resembled a Christian chapel, with pews and an altar at the end, all hewn out of the surrounding rock.
Instead of a cross at the altar, there was a statue that stretched to the ceiling.
It depicted two people, a man and a woman, with the man on the right and woman on the left.
“That looks like the statue in Aerwinya…”
Hiroshi observed.
There were more statues in place of where stained glass windows would be, depicting other people. Presumedly, they were all from whatever religion the elves followed.
“What did they call it again?… Ara… something.”
“I believe it was Arath, Master.”
“Arath, that’s it! Thanks, Hisui.”
There were four pillars, each depicting a different person. One he recognized as Hecate, on the left closest to him.
She held her arms clasped together in front, as if waiting patiently for her turn to speak.
The other three were a mystery, but he could guess as to their properties.
Opposite Hecate was a woman who looked as if water was flowing all around her, or she was made of water, similar to Lady Aki’s elemental form. Her hair and dress flowed together to the ground like a waterfall.

Cover art for Book 1, Ch 17: the Gathering
Excerpt:
It was quiet when the last of the arrivals entered, but the room wasn’t empty.
Scattered around the table were five other individuals, who all looked up.
Hiroshi spotted Kerry, who sat off to the right. The deer faeman nodded to him.
The kitsune took that as an invitation to sit next to him, with Bari seating herself on Hiroshi’s other side.
Looking around at all the unfamiliar faces, Hiroshi figured they represented the other local non-human settlements.
Across from him sat someone he thought he recognized.
Then it hit him.
‘Isn’t that the Cheif? Kara’s father. What was his name? Rudy?’
Their eyes met briefly, nodding to each other.
In all the time Hiroshi had lived in Colchester, not once was he given the chance to meet the Chief in person.
He looked like his children, with messy dark hair and blue eyes that regarded Hiroshi with approval.
He wore a cloak, similar to Kara’s, that protected him from the sun, as well as a long sleeved tunic and gloves.
Further down was a woman whose hair seemed to be made from leaves, her skin bark-like in appearance. She reflected the changing seasons in her hair, green at the roots and red and orange near the ends.
‘She must be a dryad. I didn’t know those lived around here.’
At the head of the table was the host of this little meeting, the King of the local elves alongside his Queen who sat next to him.
The King wore his hair down, long silver-white side bangs framing a strong and fair face with pale eyes that betrayed his true age. He wore something resembling a celtic version of a Chinese hanfu, a crown of petrified wood resembling antlers adorning his brow.
His Queen wore something similar, her coppery hair loosely pulled back into a half braid tied with hemp cords. She wore a circlet of similar material to the King’s crown, woven into an intricate pattern. She had green eyes that regarded everyone in the room with a kind interest.
