Q. Is August 30th the day this world's Sung Hyunje was implanted, or is it the day the original Sung Hyunje was born? I'm also curious why Sung Hyunje places so much importance on birthdays (birthday parties), and if there was anything you paid special attention to when you were setting the characters' birthdays.

In the story, his birthday is the day he was implanted. In the original world, the size of the planet and the speed of rotation and revolution were different, and the date calculation was also different. However, Crescent Moon kept the original birthday and the time that Sung Hyunje was implanted as close as possible. This is because matching the conditions as much as possible makes implantation easier.

I think Sung Hyunje's self-love is as strong as his belief that his day of birth must be celebrated. Because of this, even though he's completely sick of it, he still tries not to skip it. For a similar reason, he tends to take care of celebrating the birthdays of people around him, even if it's just out of a sense of obligation. ^^ That's also why he feels sorry about Kang Soyoung's birthday. Kang Soyoung also knows this, which is why she sometimes does things that cross the line on the day after her own birthday, things she would normally find it difficult to do.

Han Yoojin and Han Yoohyun's birthdays were decided by matching them up to multiple different meanings and significances. Other characters' birthdays were also chosen while paying attention to the imagery associated with the relevant date ranges, even if not to the same extent as those two.

근서 22.08.13 20:11 작중 생일은 심어진 날입니다. 최초의 세계는 행성 크기와 자전, 공전 속도가 다른 만큼 날짜 계산도 달라집니다. 하지만 초승달은 가급적 원래 생일과 비슷한 시기에 성현제를 심었습니다. 조건을 최대한 유사하게 맞추는 편이 심기 쉬워지기 때문입니다. 성현제는 자기애가 강한 만큼 태어난 날을 축하해야 한다고 생각합니다. 그래서 질릴 대로 질린 상태임에도 빼먹진 않으려고 합니다. 비슷한 이유로 주위 사람들의 생일도 의무적으로나마 챙겨주는 편이에요^^ 때문에 강���영의 생일은 미안하게 여기고 있습니다. 강소영도 그것을 알기에 자신의 생일 다음 날에는 평소에는 하기 힘든 선 넘는 짓을 저지르기도 합니다. 한유진과 한유현의 생일은 여러 가지 의미가 있는 만큼 그에 맞추어서 정했습니다. 다른 캐릭터들도 저 둘 정도는 아니나 해당 시기의 이미지를 신경 쓰는 편입니다.

Q. Was there ever a time when Sung Hyunje was extremely flustered / taken aback* by Song Taewon and Han Yoojin.

It is mostly to the level of feeling slightly taken aback*, there usually isn't anything that could be said to be to the level of being 'extremely' taken aback.

When it comes to Song Taewon, the time before the regression when he died protecting Sung Hyunje, that would have to be the time when Sung Hyunje was most shaken*, right?

With Han Yoojin, such incidents happened a few times during the story, didn't they? As for pre-regression Sung Hyunje, he was probably most taken aback* the time his hair got grabbed? ^^

Note: * The root-noun in the word translated as 'taken aback' here is 당황 (danghwang), which doesn't really have a perfect 1:1 translation but is a type of emotion that can be best described as a mix of fluster, confusion, panic and embarrassment. It's the feeling you get when you're caught off guard by an unexpected, awkward, or startling situation and you don't know how to react.

The root-noun in the word translated as 'shaken' is 동요 (dongyo), which refers to a state of agitation, emotional unrest, or inner turmoil.

It is the feeling of being deeply unsettled or shaken by a significant event, a piece of news, or a profound realization. Q. Before the regression, why did Sung Hyunje choose to go to Switzerland, of all places? He had traveled to many countries, but he chose Switzerland as his base. Is there a reason why he chose Switzerland out of all the countries? Also, can I ask roughly how many times Sung Hyunje was "replanted"?

The influence of Song Taewon was significant (in this decision). Since Sung Hyunje received Song Taewon's "Eclipse" specifically as an inheritance and legacy, he searched for a place that would suit Song Taewon, where he could have lived a comfortable life that was worthy of him + a location far away from Korea. On top of that, it would also have to be able to serve as the backdrop for the postcards he planned to send to Han Yoojin.

However, he didn't chose Switzerland specifically from the beginning. As long as it was pastoral place located within the Alps, any country would have been fine, it didn't really matter.

As for the number of times he was "replanted," I will share that it is a three-digit number, but I will leave the exact count to the reader's imagination. ^^

송태원의 영향이 큽니다. 송태원의 월식을 유산으로 받았으니 송태원에게 어울리며 그가 편하게 머물만한 삶이 있는 장소+한국에서 멀리 떨어진 곳을 찾아갔었죠. 그에 더해 한유진에게 보낼 엽서의 배경이기도 했습니다. 다만 처음부터 스위스를 고른 것은 아니며 알프스 산맥이 있는 목가적인 장소라면 어디든 상관없었습니다.

Q. In the beginning, after Han Yoojin was grabbed by the back of his neck when he tried to look at Sung Hyunje's status window, did he never try to see it again? I thought he might have been able to check when Sung Hyunje was asleep...

After they became business partners, Han Yoojin did not try to look at his status window again. The same goes for Moon Hyuna, Song Taewon, and the others as well. While it's partly because the other party is a sensitive S-class, but it's also because after they became somewhat close, instead of unnecessarily trying to sneak a look at their status windows in secret using the the Sprout Skill - which only shows partial information - he would rather ask the other person directly ^^.

There was one time when he subtly poked Sung Hyunje, asking about his skill list and stats, saying he was curious about them, but he didn't get a detailed answer.

동업자 비슷하게 된 이후로는 상태창을 보려 한 적이 없습니다. 문현아나 송태원 등 또한 마찬가지입니다. 상대가 예민한 s급인 것도 있지만 어느 정도 가까워진 후로는 일부 정보만 나타나는 떡잎 스킬 상태창을 굳이 몰래 보려하기 보다는 상대에게 직접 물어보고 있어요^^ 성현제에게도 스킬 목록과 스탯 상세가 궁금하다고 슬쩍 찔러본 적은 있습니다만 자세한 대답은 듣지 못했습니다.

hi! Thank you for your translations, they are so interesting!

Can i ask, what's the deal with Hwangrim? Is he going to become a major character? I thought he was just to be a one-arc wonder, so haven't really been paying attention to him that much in the china arc.

I won't be too spoilery on this one, but I'll just say that he will be back in the narrative eventually. A tertiary character level persona, I'd say?

He comes back into play in the pre-Chatterbox party arc, and proceeds to be extremely funny with hilarious interactions with not just Han Yoojin but also Song Taewon. He has fun interactions with the rest of the cast too - especially Gyeol, Yerim, even Sung Hyunje and Yoohyun.

The teensiest bit of spoiler about his look and name when he makes his appearance next - he next appears as Richard Huang, American Chinese Hunter dressed in an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt that I am pretty sure is worn without an undershirt, leaving his entire massive chest out to be admired (by Yoojin). And also board shorts.

Q. Will Song Taewon eventually ever also go to the pool together with everyone else?

If the S-classes play and let loose properly in an ordinary swimming pool, there's not going to be a pool left, so rather than a swimming pool, they'd probably go to the sea or a river or a lake, etc. ^^

As for Song Taewon, he would try to just watch, but the people around him will somehow manage to drag him in with them, saying "Let's play!".

Q. If Yoojin and the S-class hunters hadn't awakened, how much alcohol would they be able to drink and who would be the strongest and weakest drinkers?

In an unawakened state, Liette is the strongest. Before her awakening, she was also quite a heavy drinker. Even if she wasn't a born S-class hunter, she'd still have a very strong tolerance and for the most part, doesn't get drunk easily. Noah also has a strong tolerance, though not as much as Liette, and his family, in general, has a high alcohol tolerance.

Yoo Myungwoo doesn't enjoy alcohol, but he has a high tolerance. Moon Hyunah likes alcohol, and her tolerance before awakening was quite a bit above average. Han Yoohyun and Kang Soyoung are also slightly above average.

Han Yoojin's tolerance had increased quite a bit before he regressed, but at the time of the story, it is about average. Sung Hyunje's is similar to Han Yoojin's, and before his awakening, he barely ever touched alcohol. Song Taewon has a surprisingly weak tolerance to alcohol; it runs in his family, and he even had a hard time because of it before his awakening. ^^

As for Park Yerim, I haven't really thought about it since she is a minor, but I'd guess her tolerance would be stronger than Song Taewon's and weaker than Han Yoojin's.

Q. 유진이와 스급들이 각성하지 않았으면 주량이 어떻게 되는지, 누가 제일 강하고 약한지 궁금합니다. └ 근서 23.02.11 20:07 비각성 기준으로는 리에트가 가장 강합니다. 각성 전에는 상당한 주당이기도 했지요. 태생 s급이 아니더라도 강하며 웬만해선 취하지 않습니다. 노아도 리에트만큼은 아니지만 강한 편이며 집안 자체가 술이 센 편이에요. 유명우는 술을 즐기진 않지만 강한 편입니다. 문현아는 술을 좋아하며 각성 전 주량은 보통보다 조금 많은 정도입니다. 한유현과 강소영도 보통보다 약간 윗줄이에요. 한유진은 회귀 직전에는 술이 꽤 늘었었지만 작중 시점에서는 평균쯤입니다. 성현제는 한유진과 비슷하며 각성 전에는 술을 거의 입에 대지 않았습니다. 송태원은 의외로 약한 편입니다. 집안 내력이며 그래서 각성 전에는 고생한 적도 있어요^^ 박예림은 미성년자라서 생각해 본적 없지만 송태원보다는 강하고 한유진보다는 약한 정도이지 싶습니다.

I would like some crumbs on han yoojin specifically

Q. Even though Han Yoojin was born early in the year*, he had not yet graduated high school at the time Han Yoohyun entered middle school. Was he held back from starting elementary school? If so, why?

Han Yoojin's parents did not have any intention to send him to school early as someone-with-an-early-birthday*. They thought it would be better for him to match the full international age, and follow the modern system.

Note: Long long long note on age and schooling and Yoojin-Yoohyun age difference follows:

* 빠른년생 (ppareunnyeonsaeng) means "early birthday", i.e, the birth date is in the beginning months of the year (Note from a user on Italki)

So S. Korea has traditionally had another way of considering age. The "Korean age" system considers a person one year old at birth, and adds another year to everyone's age on January 1st, regardless of their actual birthdate. This means a baby born on December 31st (or 25th) is considered two years old on January 1st. The international age system has now been adopted for most legal and administrative purposes but only in 2023 and the Korean age system is still used in many social contexts. But school entry age system is a weird mix of the two.

Anyway, in Korea, elementary school is grades 1-6, middle school is 7-9 and high school is 10-12; and the school year starts on March 1st.

From what I can tell, children usually start 1st grade such that they are age 6-7 in International age.

But under the traditional practice ("빠른년생" System), which is now phased out, the school year entry cutoff used to be the actual birth date being before March 1st. This meant that a child born in January or February would enter school with children born in the previous calendar year. This made them the youngest in their class.

The current school entry system is now based on the birth year - which is more like traditional Korean age system - with the cutoff being December 31st. All children born within the same calendar year (January 1st to December 31st) are considered the same age for school purposes and enter the first grade together when the school year starts in March. Which makes the Jan-Feb born kids the oldest in their class instead.

Since Yoojin's birthday is February 7th, 1996, as per the early-year-birth (빠른년생) practise, which would still be getting followed during that time, he could have started 1st grade in 2002. But as per the modern system, he would start 1st grade in 2003. Which is what his parents seem to have chosen to go with.

Generally, it seems, some parents want(ed) to send children to school early because of the perceived advantage of finishing school early in a highly competitive and hierarchy focussed society. However, research suggests it leads to better social and emotional maturity to start later instead (which also makes sense for Yoojin's character!).

(Sorry, the Yoojin crumb multiplied and became a whole loaf of random info. I thought this was going to be a quick one, and ended up reading multiple research papers about wtf is meant and going on here. I made excel tables and still managed to confused myself for a good long while, before I added more columns and figured things out.

Yoohyun is born in December 2001. Regardless of system being followed he'd start Grade 1 in 2008, which means he would start middle school in 2014. If Yoojin started Grade 1 in 2002, he would have graduated in 2015, but since he started in 2003, he would have started his 12th grade when Yoohyun entered middle school.

Hello, hi! My asks are always open, btw! But I might take some time to get to it, like in this case ^^; Sorry nonny, I kept writing, then adding more context, then verifying in the novel, it got... a bit delayed. Hope this answer satisfies your curiousity though.

Anyway, you are absolutely right that there is something up with Director Song - he is afraid of being in charge and having power, and thinks of himself and others like him (aka S-ranks) as inhuman monsters, stemming from very deep rooted self-hatred.

The core reason for this, aka Song Taewon's backstory, is something that eventually does get revealed in the novel, in a very satisfying arc but it is a very late-novel revelation (as in around Ch 800~).

Still spoilery but short answer without too much detail is that his Lunar eclipse / Plunder skill is also connected to Transcendants, and he was in fact, also 'planted' on earth, specifically to absorb/kill Sung Hyunje. Throughout his childhood, this 'power' inadvertently caused the death of Song Taewon's entire family, starting with his younger brother when they were very young children, whose death was directly responsible for Song Taewon surviving instead; and ending with his father three years ago, who died cursing him and calling him a monster and trying to kill him - causing him to Awaken. This has, understandably, given him major survivor's guilt and trauma and self-hatred. ---- Start of Detailed Answer ---- - As has been revealed in some of the recently translated chapters, Song Taewon aka "The Lunar Eclipse" is the only person who can kill Sung Hyunje, using his "Plunder"/"Looting" skill. - It is eventually revealed that while Song Taewon is not a Natural-born S-rank or a Source's Vein, he has been specifically "planted" onto Earth by a Transcendant to consume Sung Hyunje. - However, Song Taewon's nature of "The Lunar Eclipse" demands to consume power (in form of people's life energy) to grow and thrive. His self-repression is both the reason why he's so bad at using the power, but at the time the reason why Korea even still exists, because without that repression, the Lunar Eclipse should have consumed the whole country to prepare for being able to consume Sung Hyunje. - Anyway due to this need for additional sustenance beyond just human food, as a child Song Taewon used to be small and sickly. Due to this he grew up in the city with his parents (to access medical treatment), but his stronger, taller and healthier younger brother was sent to their grandparents to live in the rural area. Even so, the younger brother was very loving and protective of his frail brother. - However, at one point in their childhood, they got into an accident while playing. Song Taewon was hurt pretty badly, but the brother refused to leave him, and instead tried to help him. Unfortunately, this almost-certainly-eventually-fatal-for-Taewon injury triggered the "Lunar Eclipse"'s self-preservation instincts and it caused Song Taewon to absorb his brother's life energy - leading him to survive at the cost of his younger brother's life. - After this incident, Song Taewon gained the health that his younger brother used to have and grew strong and tall like the brother used to be. He majorly repressed this memory, and does not remember it consciously, but it had a profound effect on him, and caused the start of his extreme self-repression due to survivor's guilt. - At some point during middle-school, he and his mother got into an accident and again - his mother passed away but he survived, also due to her life force getting consumed by the Eclipse. - At this point, his father started to blame him for the deaths of his brother and mother. This was shut down by Song Taewon's grandfather, who took him in, instead. - Eventually, the grandfather also passes away - implication is maybe due to the Eclipse, as well? By this time Song Taewon has finished school and come to the city for university. After he becomes a police officer, he reconnects with his father again and their relationship starts more or less improving - with just the past as a taboo. - Then a Dungeon Break happens when Song Taewon is with his father. His father Awakens as a highish-rank at the same time, but in response to the rush of power, goes crazy and starts attacking Song Taewon, calling him a monster and blaming him for the deaths of his wife and son. This triggers Song Taewon's Awakening, causing the father to finally also get consumed by the Eclipse and pass away.

Aka the Trauma Conga Line which is the reason why he is the very model of self-repression and self-hatred.

Q. Does Sung Hyunje personally manage the aquarium at his house? I understand that all the fish in the aquarium are caught and brought in by Sung Hyunje, but I'm also curious if they are saltwater or freshwater fish.

Because he has to spend several days at a time in dungeons when he goes in (on raids) and also has a lot of work as a guild master, there are professional caretakers who manage the aquarium.

When he has free time, he does take care of it himself. The big central tank is freshwater and mainly contains fish from dungeons, and there's also a separate saltwater tank.^^

Q. 성현제 집 수조 관리는 성현제가 직접 하나요? 수조 물고기들은 모두 성현제가 잡아온 거라고 알고 있는데, 해수어인지 민물고기인지도 궁금합니다. └ 근서 22.07.10 20:36 직접 하기에는 던전에 며칠 씩 들어가기도 하고 길드장으로서의 일도 많기 때문에 전문 관리인들이 있습니다. 한가할 때는 직접 하기도 합니다. 가장 큰 중앙 수조는 민물로 주로 던전 산 물고기들이 있으며 해수항도 따로 있어요^^

Q. Did Song Taewon, Han Yoojin, and Kang Soyoung enjoy fishing with Sung Hyunje? Why did Sung Hyunje want to go fishing together with them?

Kang Soyoung was sick and tired of it. She's the type of person who doesn't want to do anything with her boss besides dungeon raids. ^^

Song Taewon is the type of person who is well-suited to fishing. Specifically, what he likes is quietly casting his line and hoping that he catches no fish.

If Han Yoojin got the the opportunity to go fishing leisurely, it would probably suit him quite well, too. If he sees Sung Hyunje catching fish well, he would probably grumble and interfere trying to mess around with him. And if the fish don't bite well, he would jokingly tell Sung Hyunje to shoot some electricity into the water. Electro-shock fishing is illegal, by the way. ^^

As for why, Kang Soyoung was mostly just dragged into the situation because she was around. The reason for Han Yoojin and Song Taewon being there with him, would be because Sung Hyunje hopes to share his hobby with them. He wants to do a whole lot of different things together with the two of them.

Q. Will Gyeol-ie ever call Sung Hyunje 'appa' (dad) or some other title or name acknowledging him as a guardian?

Given Han Gyeol's personality, it will be difficult for him to acknowledge Sung Hyunje as a guardian. Maybe if Sung Hyunje becomes frail due to old age or if he shows some weakness, but there is no chance of that happening ^^

As long as he is able to think of Sung Hyunje as an adult stronger than him, he will comfortably continue to grumble and treat him poorly without a second thought.

He did it because it was convenient, but also because he surmised that Han Yoojin had been thinking of him when planning the bread (for the buffet). Han Yoojin had specifically requested that the white bread being served had to be served with the crusts still on, without fail. ^^

Bread served on the Original Sung Hyunje's dining table was always served with the crusts already cut off from the start.
