Arguments
Ruby: Can I stay in your dorm tonight?
Jaune: Why?
Ruby: Well, Yang and Blake were arguing about if boobies or butts were better. Then they started yelling, then the yelling turned to moaning, and it was really just hard for me to read my manga with all the noise, so can I stay over here?
Jaune: ...Yes, which manga?
Ruby: Ma-
Insert loud screeching noise here
Ruby: Oh, and can Weiss stay too?

(AToH) - Antagonist Outline: Adam Taurus
Now, let me first say that I'm not an big Adam fan nor hater. I'm not going to go on a rant about wasted potential, though I will say I think the "crazy abusive ex" thing kind of just falls completely flat for me. So I'm just going with the "revolutionary who takes things too far" approach instead.
He is going to be Blake's foil and personal protagonist, of course. They're going to have more of a big brother/little sister dynamic. With Adam being 23 at the start of Volume 1. So 6 years older than Blake. With them having known each other since they were very young and a lot longer than they did in canon.
(Side note - I've decided to change Blake's backstory a good bit, but I won't get into that here.)
I'm keeping the Dust mining part of his backstory. May or may not keep the SDC branding, definitely going to have a scar there no matter what though. Gonna have it come up earlier in the story too.
He will be leading a cell within the White Fang that happened to be operating around Vale at the time Blake leaves. Though they did also operate in north-western Anima and a little in Atlas. With Ilia not being in the cell when Blake left... for reasons.
In terms of his combat abilities, he really doesn't have much if any formal training. Maybe a little bit from some White Fang sympathetic huntsmen. But I'd imagine most of his combat ability comes from pure experience and raw talent.
And also just having a very strong semblance.
I'm going to say that for overall combat ability, Adam would be considered above average for his age. And probably would be a handful with most good pro huntsmen. Though he'd probably be able to constantly beat the more average and below average huntsmen that he would regularly encounter, and Academy students would pretty much all be no match for him. Except for maybe the very top of the classes.
Really, if they sent any top huntsmen after him, he'd be screwed. He more just survives on knowing when to retreat, in the beginning at least, and not being a big enough problem for anyone outside of maybe Atlas from sending someone that strong after him.
His story is probably going to play out mostly like it did in canon. Though I'd like to give him more interactions with the whole of the main teams.
Don't have a ton plotted out for him just yet though.

(AToH) Schedules
Ruby: Ugh, why do I have to take an extra class on Friday. It's Friday!
Weiss: It's a leadership course. You need all the help you can get in that regard, I would like to live, and I will not have a partner that misses classes. So you are going.
Ruby: But Friday is when I clean my babies.
Weiss: That's just part of being the leader, but if you really don't want to attend this class, maybe I can attend it for you.
Ruby: Really?
Weiss: Yes, I'd like to have less to catch up on after they realize how much of a mistake it was to make you the leader.
Ruby: ...

(AToH) The First Morning
Weiss wakes up on the first morning of classes with a soft light shining through the curtains. Finding that all of her new teammates are still asleep, and the dolt bed precariously hanging above her's hadn't crushed Weiss in her sleep.
Clearly she had managed to wake up earlier than the alarm Weiss had made Ruby set the previous night. After sitting up and stretching, Weiss decides to enjoy the few quiet moments she'll have before walking disasters that were her teammates woke up.
But first, she was going to send a message to Winter. Simply to let her know about the current situation with her team. But when she opened her scroll she discovered something terrible and remembered something worse.
It was 8:37.
And their first class started at 8:00.
~~~~~~
Port: While it important to learn the common behaviors of grimm, never forget that-
Professor Port is cut off when a loud shriek is suddenly heard.
Port: Hmm, seems Goodwitch has found her first victim of the year. Now as I was saying,
(AToH) Vale - The Mediator Kingdom
Vale is an UK style constitutional monarchy. With the monarch having very little actual power. Vale is divided into several semi-autonomous departments which all maintain their own regional council, and with the capital also having it's own council.
A majority of it's national council being elected directly by the citizens, with some seats being appointed by department councils. With the headmaster of Beacon Academy also having a seat on the council, as with the other kingdoms, to represent the Huntsmen of the Kingdom.
Vale, being a victor of The Great War, has often positioned itself as a neutral third party and has helped settle several disputes between the other kingdoms. It has attempted to maintain positive diplomatic ties to the other kingdoms and has offered some measured support for Menagerie. Focusing largely on avoiding another large scale war at all costs.
Similar to it's diplomatic policies, Vale's domestic policies have focused on steady growth of the economy, slow frontier colonization, and sustainable resource extraction. While also maintaining a moderate approach to the Faunus rights issue.
Though many have criticized Vale for not taking stronger stances against Faunus oppression, Mistral's lack of action against slavers and bandits withing it's borders, Atlas' military buildup, etc. With some claiming that Vale is only interested in maintaining the status quo instead of solving Remnant's many problems.
Author's Notes -
Vale very much represents the present. With a lot of it's actions being a result of the Great War, and Ozpin not wanting another large war to break out. So a lot of it's policies and actions tend to be more focused on maintaining the status quo.
A Tale of Huntsmen: Shipping
Ah RWBY shipping, a topic that has no controversy or animosity at all.
But to be more serious, I'm a bit of a multishipper, though I'm not really going to make shipping the focus of this project. Some relationships will pop up during the course of the story, but don't expect the whole thing to revolve around any one relationship or anything like that.
Maybe some spinoff one-shots if I'm feeling like writing some fluff.
I will go ahead and confirm that most canon romantic relationships, up till the end of Volume 9, will also appear in this project.
So, Bumbleby and Renora will be happening. Sun and Ilia will still have their crushes on Blake. As well as Pyrrha with Jaune. Though as they never officially "got together" I'm not sure if I'm going to actually have them start dating. Weiss and Neptune will have their thing still. Though whether or not it lasts this time, we'll have to find out.
As for the canon relationships I'm not keeping, Blake and Adam would be the major one for now. Since I'm aging Adam up a little bit and in general I don't think it really adds much. I'm also ignoring any relationships that were established outside of the main webshow of RWBY. So nothing from the novels or elsewhere.
Outside of the few canon pairs, I really don't have any other ships 100% planned out. We're probably not going to end up with any of the really crack ships and definitely no poly ships.
We'll see.
A Tale of Huntsmen: Misc Team Plans I
CFVY -
They're going to serve as mentors and as a measuring stick for RWBY and JNPR. Probably going to get some interaction with Blake and Velvet. Maybe have them and Jaune form a bit of a temporary alliance at some point.
They're going to be a B team in terms of plot importance. So I'm not really going to have them have big character arcs or anything. Might have them do some important stuff at some point, but they're mostly just there to set a standard.
CRDL -
They're very much going to be active rivals to RWBY and JNPR during at least the early Beacon arcs. Also going to try to flesh them out generally. Basically I want CRDL to foil the main teams while also being an example of the flaws in the current huntsmen system.
Cardin is effectively going to be a foil to Jaune and Weiss. Since I'm going to have him be from an influential "old huntsmen" family. Kind of a "what you will become if you don't change" for Weiss and and a "You could've been like him" for Jaune.
I'm going to have one of them be a former high level tournament fighter turned huntsmen in training. Like Pyrrha. I've considered doing more a "burnout" angle. Having him basically drop out of combat school, but I guess go the apprenticeship route after that. Or maybe just have him be really good like Pyrrha, but be more of an ass about it.
Maybe both?
Don't really know what I'm doing with the other two yet, but I think I'll probably figure it out as I keep fleshing out the huntsmen system.
SSSN -
Probably going to introduce them a bit later in the story. Since I'm having the Vytal festival take place at the end of the year. Other than that, I'll probably try to give Sage and Scarlet some more time to shine. Not really a whole lot I'd want to change with them, at least at Beacon.
STRQ -
Qrow is probably going to be introduced a little bit earlier.
Raven... is still Raven.
Taiyang is going to be more involved in the plot, though probably more so after Beacon. Might have him show up to lead a mission or something.
Summer... is still dead.
Might do a prequel fic for them eventually.
A Tale of Huntsmen: Ozpin's Agents
Ozpin's inner circle will remain the same as far as who's currently in it and a lot of their stories will probably remain somewhat the same.
With Lionheart losing his courage and joining with Salem's faction to his ultimate downfall. Though I'm probably going to show a bit more what an impossible situation he was put in being a Faunus headmaster in Mistral.
Qrow losing his mind, or more accurately becoming an alcoholic, after Summer's death. Then finally going off the deep end after the fall of Beacon and battle of Haven. Before pulling himself back out of it. With some details probably changing.
Ironwood will then lose his heart. Though I'm still deciding whether or not I want it to be to his downfall like Lionheart, or if he'll eventually redeem himself like Qrow. Maybe somewhere in the middle?
100% changing his semblance though.
Inner Circle vs Middle Circle vs Outer Circle
The Inner Circle effectively knows everything about Ozpin, the maidens, the relics, and Salem. Though, of course, there are some parts that Ozpin is leaving out. It's usually just kept to the headmasters of the academies and maybe a few field agents like Qrow and the rest of STRQ.
The Middle Circle consists of mostly high level staff at the academies and a few teams worth of more active huntsmen. Usually forming the other headmaster's own inner circles. They know about the maidens and the relics. Usually there are less than 100 people at a time in the middle circle.
The Outer Circle is basically just huntsmen who are willing to do jobs off the books. With the justification being that the public wouldn't handle it well if the missions they were going on were public. So basically they're just black op huntsmen. It's very much a "need to know" sort of thing.
STRQ
STRQ is a bit of an odd case as far as the Inner Circle is concerned. With them joining basically right after graduating. Which almost never happens, and considering only one of them is left, which probably means it was a bad idea.
Though I'm still deciding whether or not I want Taiyang to still be a member or not.
A Tale of Huntsmen: Team JNPR Initial Plans
With JNPR I'm going to be focusing on largely just fleshing them out and giving them more to do. Both inside out outside of the team.
Jaune Arc
Good old Jaune Arc, everyone's favorite or least favorite character. I'm going to keep him mostly how he is in canon in terms of his personality and what we know of his background. Which we really don't know that much about outside of his great great grandad fighting in the great war and him having seven sisters.
Right now I'm planning on having him and Pyrrha kind of switch backgrounds in terms of who they're based on. So instead of being a lower class farmer like Joan of Arc, Jaune is going to be from a noble family. Or at least Vale's version of one. Though probably more low nobility and kind of "small town wealthy" and not crazy rich like the Schnees.
As for why he's untrained, there's a few ways to go with that. Personally I'm leaning more towards him, and his sisters, being intentionally kept away from the huntsmen lifestyle by their father at least. Though I am going to have him know that basic stuff that you could learn from a 5 minute google search in universe.
Probably going to give him a few "non-huntsmen" skills to kind of balance him out though.
Also probably going to turn down his attempts at wooing Weiss a little bit. Flesh out his rivalry with Cardin and probably turn it more into an actual rivalry.
Also figure out if I want Arkos to be a thing or not.
Now in terms of what Jaune's role is going to be in the bigger RWBY+JNPR group. He's going to act more as Ruby's Lieutenant in a lot of cases. With the pair of leaders being responsible for a lot of the planning that happens.
Nora Valkyrie
Honestly, Nora and Ren and pretty much just named background characters for a lot of the early volumes. So just giving them something to do will be a good start.
I'm going to keep her backstory pretty much the same, though probably with a bit more detail on what they did after the Grimm attack and how they ended up as huntsmen in training. I'm probably going to have them travel around a little bit before going to Beacon. Though probably only in Mistral, and maybe a little bit in Vale.
I'm still mostly going to have Ren and Nora attached at the hip. Though I'll probably have a plotline where they're not together at some point during Beacon.
I'm not really sure what role Nora is going to play in the greater team just yet. Since Yang is going to be more of the team mom, I don't really want them both playing the same role. Going to have to do some more thinking on that.
Pyrrha Nikos
With Pyrrha we really don't know much at all about her background outside of being from Argus. Or really what her motivations for being a huntress/tournament fighter is. So I'll be expanding on that.
As I mentioned in the Jaune section, I'm giving Pyrrha kind of the opposite of Achilles' background. So she's going to start off in a lower class family and be a first generation huntsman. Making her family fairly rich along the way.
With Pyrrha being discovered by a huntsmen version of a talent agency fairly young. So she's basically the huntsmen version of a child actor. Her motivations being to keep providing for her family and a bit of "destiny". Since she does have a fairly strong aura and great semblance. She does feel that it is her destiny to be a fighter.
She's also probably going to be more guarded early on. Taking a bit to open up to her teammates. With them, of course, becoming very close by the time Volume 3 rolls around.
However, her fate will be the same.
Lie Ren
A lot that can be said about Ren has already been talked about in the Nora section. So this one is probably going to be a little short.
I think Ren is kind of going to play the team dad role of the team overall. Adding a bit of structure to the team and keeping everyone focused when they need to be. He never really takes over Jaune or Ruby's leader roles with them around. Though he can kind of act as a leader if both of them are missing, but he very much dislikes being put into that position.
Other than that, I'm probably going to give him some time with "the guys" once SSSN shows up. Though him and Nora are still going to be mostly attached at the hip during the Beacon arcs.
Probably going to get into why Renora isn't already a thing at some point too.
A Tale of Huntsmen: Team RWBY Initial Plans
Team RWBY is going to be largely the same. Most of the changes made to them are either going to be making things more consistent with information we learn post Beacon.
While also making some aspects of their personalities more prominent and things like that.
Ruby Rose
Ruby is largely staying the same. Though I do plan to make her more socially awkward. With a little bit more focus on her love for weapons and her smithing/engineering skills.
While Ruby has a flat character arc in canon, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I do intend to give her more of a character arc. Mostly revolving around her responsibilities as a leader and huntress, and her living up to Summer's legacy.
I also do want to make it fairly clear that while rather optimistic, Ruby isn't super naive. Since I don't really like how some fanon makes Ruby a little too childish for my liking.
Also going to focus on her lack of hand to hand skills, and generally everyone's weaknesses when it comes to combat, earlier on. Though I'm not sure that's really going to be a problem she fixes, more just a flaw she's going to have to work around.
Weiss Schnee
I'm going to have Weiss' character arc take a bit longer, and I'm changing how she got her scar.
That's pretty much it. Weiss is best girl, I think she just needed a little longer to get to that level.
Schneekos?
Blake Belladonna
Blake is pretty much the same in terms of personality and what's she's going to be doing early on in the story.
I'm going to give her a reason to want to be partners with Yang, since it seems like Blake picked her out specifically and we never really learn why. Obviously we know where their relationship goes in canon, but I don't think "She's hot" is really going to work there. I'll think of something I guess.
When it comes to what exactly her relationship with Adam is/was and how much of her backstory I'm keeping. I'm not really sure at the moment.
Yang Xiao Long
With Yang I'm going to... actually give her something to do in the early volumes.
But to be serious, I want to let her be the bombastic, puntastic, and awesometastic bombshell blonde that she is. While also having her act at the "team mom" for RWBY and JNPR. With a little bit of conflict in balancing those two aspects of herself.
It's hard to go be the fun party girl when you're taking care of your friends.
And her not really knowing how to deal with Ruby being not only her teammate, but her leader.
And don't get me started on Raven.
A Tale of Huntsmen
Hello peoples, this is the start of my little RWBY fanfic/AU/reimagining thing that I'm calling A Tale of Huntsmen (Which might change later, we'll see).
This is kind of just a little write up on what I plan to do here, that will probably be replaced by a less scatterbrained version once I get further into developing it.
What could be considered the main premise of this series, is that I'm promoting JNPR from being the B-Team to RWBY to having JNPR effectively being on the same level as RWBY, except for Ruby who remains the protagonist of the series.
And they will now officially be sister teams.
Now, I'll admit that juggling 8 main characters and keeping each of their plots and personalities interesting is probably going to be difficult. But I'm going to try to do the best I can with this and maybe get some help at some point.
Largely this series is going to focus on expanding on what the original did rather than outright changing everything to something else. Sure, I do plan on changing some characters and lore bits, but I want to keep most of the foundations in tact while also adding my own spin to things.
I'm not sure how this is going to go or how far I'm going to get into making it, but I look forward to seeing what this can become.
