To slow Don Lueck’s dementia, his doctors suggested that he learn a new skill. He took up art in 2019 and has made more than 17,000 paintings. The mummy of Tiye, with a head of hair perfectly preserved, is one of the most important artifacts in the collection of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo. DNA testing in 2010 identified the Elder Lady, as she had been called since her discovery in 1898, as Queen Tiye, grandmother of Tutankhamun, mother of Akhenaten, and wife of Amenhotep III. She was one of the most powerful queens in Egyptian history. Tiye is on display at the museum’s magnificent Royal Mummies’ Hall. I’ve spoken before about my work documenting the rewilding of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian leopard as a powerful symbol of restoration and regeneration. I’ve spent days and days sitting calmly, waiting and watching these magnificent creatures. Although it can be frustrating (I’m not a patient person), I’m extremely happy to find that my work is becoming more difficult, more complex, with the arrival of each new cub. Here, we see the latest one. Born at the Arabian leopard breeding center in Taif, Saudi Arabia, these apex predators will one day be released back into this ecosystem. The center is operated by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). We are honoring the pioneering deep-sea photographer and longtime National Geographic Explorer Emory Kristof, who passed away on February 6 at the age of 80. Known particularly for his iconic photos of the discovery of the Titanic, Kristof took readers to places they could never reach. “Emory made a difference in how we see the sea,” says David Doubilet, a fellow photographer who collaborated on stories with Kristof for decades. “I covered the first 200 feet [60m] of depth, and he took the rest. As a reporter, I often work abroad, but over the last year I turned my eye to my own country—France—to document climate change. According to the national weather agency, 2022 was both the hottest and driest year on record and marked by multiple disasters. Forest fires reached a record, with more than 62,000 hectares (153,000 acres) burned. Drought brought historically low harvests for farmers. The summer accelerated the decline of ice mass in the mountains, which show an unprecedented loss—experts estimate that glaciers will disappear in the Pyrenees Mountains within 30 years.
