omg tng also did an episode with a betazoid interrogator (well, an investigator, but they're doing similar things). Every time I think of star trek concepts I feel like I'm coming up with something that's already been done.

Jadzia is a very frustrating character to me because she is written as very open-minded and understanding and I think that that sometimes leads to some shitty places, when she's written that way because otherwise the writers would have to grapple with some more difficult writing choices. So it's easier to have her be this enigmatic, smiling vessel and a result she's just not that well developed.
Jadzia seems to very accepting of various men's bullshit. And my impression of this is colored by the fact that it was mostly men writing those - like, of course you want me to see your male character being endearing, so you are going to make the female character be endeared by them. And then on top of this we have the whole gender-changing nature of the Trill - so we get to see Jadzia's extremely written-by-men insights into womanhood. Like, Dax finds being a woman refreshing, and she comments on how nice it is to get attention.
And then we obviously have Julian's flirting with Jadzia, Quark's sexism, and Curzon rejecting Jadzia from the program because he was attracted to her - all of those things Jadzia is forgiving towards. (those things are all different and probably need some like more in-depth analysis but I think it's safe to say that Jadzia's usual reaction to most forms of misogyny she experiences is like, a headshake and a smile, more or less.)
And like. That's bullshit.
And you can't even argue that it's because Trill society/Trek future is not sexist, so it doesn't bother Jadzia as much, because it's like, novel to her or whatever, because we have Emory Dax!
Dax's first host, who was "one of first women to be on the council"! So Trills explictly are a society who used to be patriarchal! And not only used to be, but a Dax host was there and had to combat that, so Jadzia literally remembers it. In first person! So this isn't even like, generational trauma, it's her trauma, or Dax's. She was there.
And like, this is interesting, because Jadzia indentifies strongly with Curzon, and Curzon himself was sexist. And like, you could probably make something nuanced out of this, like with many things about Trills - the psychology of joining is more messed up the more you think about it, (like the episode when a man tries to kill Jadzia to grt Dax - a murderer now shares a body with his victim. That's gotta mess you up) so it probably could lead to Jadzia excusing some things that she probably shouldn't, because Curzon's conciousness is such a strong influence on her life.
But like, I'm not sure if I want to give this so much thought. Bc Trek writers are fucking notorious for bringing misogyny in because they think it's funny, or because it's just the Default thing they think a society does, but not want to at all think how this affects their female characters. Sexism is an annoying personal flaw impolite people do, but in the end you can just brush it off and laugh at it, and do what you want either way - because the writers are men and they want to think about this way. Otherwise they would have to grapple with why they and their bosses are mostly men in real life.

out of all the star trek chief engineers i think miles o’brien is the least likely to be a machinefucker. i think he loves his job but does not eroticize it. trip tucker is in the middle he would fuck a machine as long as it had tits and a sexy voice. b’elanna and geordi would go a step farther they would fuck a machine as long as it had a vaguely humanoid form but are happy to get pretty abstract with it. scotty would fuck the enterprise as is

This was supposed to say a probably railroad-y annoying set of tags on a one-sentence post by @abilugarak (Garashir and Garak is cheating on Ziyal) but apparently it was too long & really tbh not that related to the post so I'm making my own post. Welcome to my post. Have a seat.
Garashir but Ziyal is getting cheated on. And she feels abandoned and upset over not being chosen but it could be worse, because you see, she's a fujoshi.
Ok hear me out on this.
Ziyal is a young, very traumatized young woman, who comes off as very inexperienced, innocent, and peaceful. And do you know why? Because she has found a solace in the storm and that solace is gay anime porn. Or whatever the Cardassian & Bajoran versions of this are called.
More arguments for this I collected: she is an art kid (have you met one? Yeah exactly) and she willingly hangs out with Bashir and Garak together. What other possible reason would a person have to witness their bullshit? If not the reason that they find the sight of their fatherfigure unclecrush flirting with a man strangely compelling? (yes i know that the time we saw was the changeling. garak flirted with the changeling too it doesnt matter.)
And like. Ziyal is Innocent. And that is something that I do believe is partly genuine (in a way that she is going to be sheltered - in a way that even though her circumstances were traumatic, they were also quite limited and monotone, so she doesn't have a lot of experience with a varied set of hardships) but also that she is projecting conciously. Ziyal is fawning to Dukat big time - it's always lovemelovemeloveme, and she makes herself very sweet, and childlike, and I believe, also pure. Dukat is definitely someone who would feel a Way abt his daughter's sexuality. And Ziyal knows this, partly maybe even subconciously. She doesn't allow herself to show Dukat an angry or upset side of her. She uses this allure with other people too - but she does drop it with Garak briefly, when she tells him she knows what kind of a man she is. And the image she projects, as is it often does, starts to take over her and causing an internal pressure to act according to it.
And, you know, Ziyal lover her father. She loves to be loved. And her father's dissaproval over her dating Garak, it doesn't hurt, not really, except she does find herself defending herself, saying to Father that Garak is not so bad, that he's sweet, that he's nice - she doesn't say "it's none of your business", and she doesn't want to do that...
And like, some of the reasons that young women so often gravitate towards mlm stories is the *fantasy* of it. Its otherwordly. It's different. When she finds these stories, she doesn't have to confront her identity, her needs or wants as a person, as a woman, as a Cardassian, with her father being very much in the patriarchal Cardassian society. She doesn't have to feel guilty about dreaming about being a different kind of woman - one that isn't a good daughter, a good girl, someone you want to love and care for - because she's not dreaming about being a woman at all. It's okay. It's safe. So it doesn't matter how explicit it gets, or how crazy - it's just not real, and it's fine. And reading BL can be an occassion to dream about love and romance that happens between two equals, coworkers, friends - a relationshil that isn't going to make her have to confont the very big power dynamic between her mother and her father.
So she likes yaoi. It's a thing. And when she finds out about Garak and Bashir, she's upset. She's sad. She feels rejected. She wonders if she did something wrong. But then, she thinks about it... and there was this novel she meant to read about a Cardassian and a human, so she'll look it up, and really, that Dr. Bashir is not a bad looking man...
So, back to cheater Garak...
He buys Ziyal's innocence 100%. He is someone who was robbed of his childhood violently, and then he was deprived of Cardassia - and Ziyal, being both outwardly childlike and also a skirt-wearing, walking manifestation of Cardassia's ideals for women (but with "imperfections" (being half-Bajoran and a bastard) that only make him project onto her harder) awakes a powerful protectiveness in him. He doesn't want to be the one to break Ziyal's heart. He needs to preserve her. And you know, he's a corruptive influence, he's defective, and he already damaged Julian considerably (guiltguiltguilt) so he should just really try very hard to not taint this beautiful pure beacon of light.
So, scene. Imagine this Garak. Convinced she has no idea. Internalized homophobia so bad it would kill a small animal. Picking up Ziyal's sketchbook thoughtlessly when she goes to the bathroom. And seeing a beautifully rendered picture of himself getting fucked in the ass by Dr. Bashir

Speaking of Garak/Ziyal I've always considered the premise of them fucking because Ziyal really wants to and Garak really doesn't want to but he does anyway and Ziyal has a great time and Garak does not.

Starfleet really is just Schrodinger's military because they keep saying we're not a military and then having military ranks and then doing military shit. Anyways I can't wait to watch the Starfleet Academy show where they're not in the military, but they keep doing really military shit like chanting "Duty, Honour, Service" and also probably doing drills, and maybe we'll have a hazing episode too. Yay boldy going and all that, I love space coloniza- I mean space exploration.
