Happy Pride Month! I really like the way Jon's queerness gets portrayed in canon.

The most common narrative for queer people is one of shame. Shame about our identity, our feelings, the society-instilled guilt that comes with being attracted to the same gender. Often, this is the narrative that gets portrayed in media- one of ignorance, then shame, turning finally into acceptance. Its a common experience, especially!

But its not the only experience.

Some of us, including myself here, grew up in queerness from the start. Not only did I basically always know I was attracted to women, I've had amazing queer role models from the start (my grandmothers, who were finally able to get married when I was six months old), so I never dealt with the shame or guilt. What I did deal with was the pressure from both heterosexual and closeted queer people to stop being so open about it, as they put their own hangups onto me, in order to try and force me to feel the shame THEY did.

And this is pretty much exactly Jon's experience in canon. He grew up around Diana, for gods sake. He never questions his attraction to Jay, or feels shame about his bisexuality, but he does feel the influence of social pressure TRYING to make him question whether or not he, as Superman, is allowed to be open about it.

Its nice to feel represented! I see a lot of people wish they saw him 'struggle' more with his attraction to men, or have this big realization moment... but I urge you to consider that in a world where thats the dominant queer narrative, maybe Jon is for the rest of us.

as someone who does find it hard to be nice

be kind. i know the world is horrible and its so difficult to be kind to everyone you meet. It is so, so difficult to not let the slightest annoyance turn you into an asshole when you're stressed. But you need to be kind despite that, you need to choose kindness because it will make you feel better. It will make others feel good and want to be around you too of course, but I'm sure you know that already. You need to be kind for yourself because when you are kind to others it genuinely makes it easier to be kinder to yourself.

I know you might not care, but I love you. You can get better and it's not hopeless. Continue being kind especially when it's difficult.
