I recognize that it's 1:00 AM but it just hit me that Dear Evan Hansen would have worked so much better (coming from someone who genuinely enjoyed the original play) if Evan was the one who had died and Connor was the main character trying to come to terms with the fact that his bullying might have driven Evan to take his own life, while also pretending that the two of them were friends in order to appear innocent but being haunted by Evan due to his own guilt, and by the time it gets to 'You Will Be Found', he's genuinely helped out so many students in his high school (and they've helped him) and it feels good and he's no longer the bully he once was but he's crushed by the realization that if he had just been this open-minded and kind from the beginning, Evan might still be alive, and the emotions just spiral out of control, and you hate this character but you also sympathize with him and it's complex and nuanced and tragic, and the whole time, he's writing these fake letters, which would honestly give the title a bit more meaning: Dear Evan Hansen.
