i rewatched thunderbolts tonight and i have thoughts!!!

as a nineteen year old girl who has always felt everything so deeply, this movie is everything to me. mental health awareness, action scenes, heartfelt moments, and of course, bucky barnes, this film has everything a nerdy teenage girl could ever need or want.

i love the characters and their dynamics, they feel so real. my favorite is obviously bucky, but besides him yelena and bob hold very special places in my heart.

yelena belova, the love of my life. i am so so so happy they didn’t give her the black widow treatment in any way. natasha romanoff walked, was sexualized from day one, and had her potential wasted so that yelena could run. i loved every moment of hers. from her stepping into the void and her protecting her younger self in her shame rooms, to her making light banter along the way. not to mention it’s so refreshing to see a character struggle with their mental health and the loss of a loved one, not because i want to see that, but because it’s real. it’s life, it happens to us all, and it’s refreshing to know that we’re not alone - which is a huge message in this movie, obviously.

when she speaks to alexei and says “daddy, im so alone. i don’t have anything anymore” AUGHHHHHH it gets me every. single. time. florence pugh i love you so so much and yelena belova i might love you even more.

and then there’s bob. god, lewis pullman did such an incredible job as him. i cannot imagine having to play technically three separate roles in one movie but he did so great at them all. he was truly the perfect casting for these characters and i’m so happy that this was my introduction to him! as for bob, god, where do i even start??? he’s also so, so real, so raw. i love that. to have a character that had struggled with addiction but it’s not all there is to him. to see him, like yelena, struggle so openly with their mental health, and to see them work through it and overcome it together?? hell yeah.

like i mentioned before, i just love the character dynamics. the banter. the jokes. yelena and bob together, helping each other through it all. bucky and walker still butting heads. alexei as comedic relief. ava’s wit. they’re such a fun group and i need need need more of them asap!! none of them are allowed to die in doomsday!!!!

and yeah, okay, some of the fight scenes are kind of silly. the one with everyone vs sentry? yeah, i giggled a bit. it’s definitely not the best i’ve seen, but ohhhh boy have i seen worse. i think it’s charming, in a way.

also dare i say i think sentry and the winter soldier are foils of each other?? maybe it’s painfully obvious or maybe i’m just stupid but it was really interesting seeing the similarities and differences between the two — especially considering valentina’s identity reveal in the comics… hmmm.

i, like many others, have struggled with mental health for practically as long as i can remember. this movie makes me feel seen. everyone involved in this film really brought it to life in so many ways. i love how it tackles it’s serious topics while also intertwining humor, love, and acceptance of yourself and others. i refuse to believe it “flopped” in the box office, i don’t care what the numbers say!! thunderbolts is absolutely one of my favorite movies of the year and definitely makes my top movies overall.
