- Phoenix was quite a handful as a child, often terrorizing the poor creatures of the Everfree Forest. Often giving her mother’s quite a scare when she’d return with a Timberwolf leg in her maw and several splinters, saying “I never found the ingredients I needed!” When in reality she could’ve just went to the market only a few ways from their cozy home.

- Growing up with a shy mother and often busy mom, Phea never really had a normal childhood. Often spending time at home with Flutters while making tea for the animals. When she could, she’d follow Spitfire to work and practice her flying. Being the daughter of two fine fliers (even if one hadn’t been an avid), she expecting to have her cutie mark in some sort of flying but one day when she was brewing tea for her mother’s party she found an image of a steam cup of herbal tea. This couldn’t be, she was destined to fly beyond peaks of ice! To burn trails of fires in her speedy wake! Not make some filly tea for some pretty upper crust’s party!

- With this knowledge she begged her mother’s to enroll her in flight school although they’d both already agreed prior that they’d take her there anyways. After enrolling, she quickly rose up the ranks. Eventually becoming one of the youngest fliers to graduate flight school. Afterwards Phea worked to become part of the royal guard, and now is the guardian of Prince Apollo Helios.

- her favorite color is purple, and she hates the color blue.

Background information:

- Arrogant in every aspect, Dawnovan believes his skills are surpassed by no one but his mother and father. He is very prideful of his mother and father almost to a fault, often bragging that they were the best ponies in equestria.

- As a colt he’d often find himself in some trouble as he’d pick fights with his fellow flight school students, including his best friend; Phoenix Rise. Longtime rival and best friend. During his time as a student, he’d often claim he would surpass his parents and become the fastest Pegasus in Equestrian. Unfortunately his speed averages only a little below his friend Phoenix and sister Iris.

- Dawn isn’t the brightest in the bunch, but he when he knows he’ll put his words where his hooves are and make it work. Even if he doesn’t entirely understand.

- Even though he’s rougher than diamonds in stone, he’s very caring for those he’s close to. Especially his family and friends. But often he remains oblivious of new people, forgetting names and not acknowledging them.

Trivia:

- He knows he will never really be as fast as his parents or sister. To be honest, he is the slowest in the family. Only faster than the average Pegasus but nothing more than that.

- He, Apollo and Cassandra are the only ones who know Phea’s secret about wanting to open a tea shop.

- His favorite color is blue and his least favorite color is green

- Soarin and Rainbow were concerned for him when he was younger because he had impulsive tendencies.

- One time when he was at the store he forgot to take Iris (his little sister) back with him home. Dawnovan has a tendency to forget about Iris, but in truth he does care.

- His parents instructed him on his flight skills in hopes of helping him improve. But with time, his ability to read the environment very much helped him standout.

- He is best friends with Phoenix Rise.

- Cassandra De Li, daughter of Fluer De Li and Fancy Pants, is his girlfriend. Although rumor has it that they are a bit on the rocks currently.

- He tried to become part of the royal guard and ended up dropping out and rejoining the races

Background information:

- being the younger sister isn’t fun, but she’d rather be that than some stupid noble. Which is what she’d claim and swear to her best friends, Duchess Gala and Princess Arte. At a young age she discovered how much attention you get when your the oldest, and being the youngest you often are overlooked which brings some good luck when you accidentally broke your mom’s favorite trophy or punched that filly in the face for calling her a birdbrain.

- Iris noticed how she had a talent in looking, watching, observing. She’d seemed to inherit her mother’s speed and sight, making her a good pony in rescue missions.

- Iris never really was close to either of her parents, due to them often fretting over her brother’s mishaps. She didn’t care, maybe a little bit, but either way she didn’t care. If someone needed help, then as long as they got it it wasn’t her problem.

- When her team wasn’t out in search of some missing pony or some pony in trouble, they’d station in Canterlot and rest till they were called up again. During this time, she’d become good friends with Duchess Gala and Princess Artemis. Even though she’d already met the night princess prior due to Aunt Rarity being such a close family friend. Sometimes, the two royals would even accompany her on missions.

Trivia:

- she is faster than her brother and father (barely), but cannot surpass her mother.

- One time, she was forgotten at the store and it became a traumatic experience for her as she wandered for hours in search of her way home. Eventually her mother found her and took her home then gave her hot cocoa and cookies.

- She’s close with Phoenix but not really, mostly rivals to a certain extent.

- Gala and her dated briefly but nothing really came of it.

- She holds regret over a certain mission she was apart of, one night a bat pony settlement in a valley caught fire in the night so she and her team went to help rescue and evacuate people. When a single mother was screaming for her lost filly, Iris went back to search for her but could not find her due to the dark and smoke. She was forced out due to the place going down in flames, the filly’s body was never found but it is assumed she burned to death. Iris still holds regret over this incident, never really forgiven herself for not being able to find that little filly.

- Artemis tried to help calm the nightmares that followed this incident for Iris, but ultimately could not help her with her grief.

Okay so you’ll need to listen to this to get better context but honestly. I felt like this really made sense for my two boys. You guys haven’t seen ‘em yet, but here is Peren and Lioes. I think you can tell who’s who, but Lioes being the over dramatic grif he is, he’s chosen to be a little extra today. And Peren my sweet child is usually his little follower of sorts (mostly tag along) but today he decided to play along with Lioes’s little scheme.

Hello one and all! And welcome to Icaredes. Land of the Griffins and Lupenats.

Here is the little study i made of the griffess in Icaredes, griffens vary from a golden-eagle/lioness to a Siamese-finch. Griffens live in flocks or family groups. Once long ago they’d lived in territories established by scents and fighting, but in modern day they now live in kingdoms marked in bloodlines and battles.

In the kingdoms there are ruling queens and kings who are established by their royal blood or by their battles. A common way to gain a throne is to fight the current ruler of the land. One of the longest reining families is known as the “Leonian” family or the “Phynianx” family. Rumored to have ruled since the Great Fall (thousands of years ago). The family has been pure lion-eagle for their entire bloodline, and but mixing their blood with other families (such as Siamese or Swans) they lose their connection to their all powerful goddess, Hestea Haven Phynianx.

The four of the Eclipse gifts given to the griffins are Winter, Hypnosis, Darkness, and Flame magic (although now named Pheonix). Given to the special species known for helping the griffin goddess and god’s child, Eclipsen to create the Order of the Moon.

While the Phynianx is a prominent family name, so are the branching houses below:

Ambrevin: the house of Peacocks & Pumas (once tigers), they were known for their hypnotic abilities with their tail feathers. They aren’t the only griffens species capable of hypnosis, although their control over it is very powerful. (Bengals [small], Tigers, Owls, and Jaguars all have minor control over it)

Aquarius: while technically a minor family, swans-jaguars, the Aquarius still hold great power in the arts (they also once had a water affinity but lost it for unknown reasons). Even though they’re performers, they still hold the titles of royalty in their own lands owned by their ancestors.

Demetrias: the Siamese family (the only family branch that as long as your part siamese, you have some access to the family fortunes). Owning very high amounts of gyns due to being distributors of silk and other fabrics.

Meladora: lost to the previous wars of time, (such as the Great Fall, and War of Haven Claws) the Meladora family are the caracle-peregrines, currently the only known survivor in this family is Duchess Sparence, although her title is unnofficial. Due to the outbreak of the Haven Curse (an illness) her children and grandchildren died and she was left as the only known survivor of her family flock.

Pandora: with notable similarities, the Pandora’s are the branch off of the Meladora’s with griffin species , the barn owls-pumas. The spies of the Soln Kingdom.

While these aren’t all the families, they are the primary blood flocks of the Soln Kingdom. This is some of the bio of the griffin species in the land of Icaredes, next I’ll move onto the Lupenats, then the Ruin Foxes, and so on.

I have a feeling their relationship has been like this throughout most the series, as we’ve seen Brambleclaw struggle with even continueing a relationship with her and they’ve only ever argued with eachother (and sure I’m a bit bias cus i don’t like brambleturd). Squirrelflight is just too used to the abuse to say anything about it, and i think sandstorm and leafpool, to an extent, know it too.

Regarding Bramblestar’s behaviour in Squirrelflight’s Hope

Minor spoilers for the book ahead but I won’t be tagging them as I feel these issues are something everyone should be aware of if they are even considering reading this book.

Heads up I will be talking about emotional abuse a lot in this post, not only in the context of this book but with my personal experiences with this kind of abuse so if you feel uncomfortable with these topics then feel free to stop reading.

In this book Bramblestar uses several abuse tactics against Squirrelflight and by the end of the book they are back together (I’ll talk more about that further down). I’m not sure how intentional these themes of abuse were in the book but it is handled poorly. Even though I don’t have time to dig out every single example of abuse (and I can’t remember what specific points of the book they were at) I will just name and discuss the abuse tactics used rather than show the examples, I am with two other people who have read the book and I am consulting with them to make sure I don’t misremember anything. If anyone does want a specific passage I will try and dig it up for you.

Abuse Tactic 1: Gaslighting

For those of you who don’t know what gaslighting is, it’s where an abuser will make their victim question themselves even though the victim is usually right. This is something done by an abuser to get more control over their victim by making their victim feel insecure. They will make the victim question their memory, judgement and even their sanity. It is a tactic that has been used on me a fair few times. Throughout the book Bramblestar makes Squirrelflight question her judgement with the Sisters situation, constantly telling her that she has bad judgement, is disloyal to her Clan, and that the Sisters are bad cats. He does it in a way which makes Squirrelflight both question her moral judgement and her place in ThunderClan, throughout the book she even fantasies several times about potentially joining the Sisters. Even though the audience can see that Squirrelflight’s plan is really good and probably the best way of solving things, Squirrelflight increasingly doubts herself and starts questioning herself more and more as the book goes on due to Bramblestar’s relentless attitude.

Abuse Tactic 2: Control

I’m not sure what specifically to call what Bramblestar is doing here other than control. Throughout the book he makes up several new rules that Squirrelflight must follow otherwise her position as deputy is threatened. The main one I can think of is that she can no longer make her own decisions, he makes it so she has to run EVERYTHING by him first. Squirrelflight has no freedom and must run everything she does by him, she cannot make a single decision as deputy without him approving it first, and during the book he often goes against what she says anyway as a means to gain control over her. During discussions with other leaders he often contridicts her and shuts her up, making her suggestions sound ridiculous and out of the question. At one point he even tells her not to say anything during a gathering, despite her having the right to voice any thoughts or concerns like everyone at a gathering.

Abuse Tactic 3: Silent Treatment

Throughout a large portion of the book, Bramblestar refuses to talk to Squirrelflight unless he has to (e.g telling her what she can and can’t do like in the previous paragraph) and it is done without any kind of emotion or with a cold detachment . Again this is a tactic that has been used against me and it is horrible, to have someone you love and care about completely ignore you for extended periods at time with you having little to no understanding as to what you did to deserve this treatment. It is extremely unnevering and isolating and makes you feel like you have no one. It is often a tactic used to make the victim beg for forgiveness despite having little understanding as to why they are being treated like this (I unfortunately have done this several times despite knowing in retrospect I did little or nothing wrong in those situations). Bramblestar also refuses to defend Squirrelflight in front of the other Clans when they call her a traitor, he stands there and let her take it, thus making her feel even more insecure and alone and I believe what he did in that situation can also class as gaslighting.

The effect on Squirrelflight

Like I said before throughout the book she becomes less and less sure of herself to the point where she questions her place in ThunderClan several times. She also does something that is typical of an abuse victim (it is something I have personally done) and avoids her abuser. In the book there is one segment about her assigning herself onto every single patrol so she will not have to be around Bramblestar. This is not done out of spite, it is done out of insecurity and fear, she did it because she was scared of initiating conversation with him while he is giving her the silent treatment, a fear I too experience whenever this tactic is used on me.

How he conflict is resolved in book

After Squirrelflight comes back to life Bramblestar apologies. But how he apologises also raises red flags for me

The key word highlighted here being “we”. He makes it sound like Squirrelflight also has equal blame in their relationship problems. She didn’t. Most of the problems with the relationship stemmed from Bramblestar and his attitude towards her. Also in another bit he specifically apologies for being wrong for the Sisters thing. He never once apologises for his behaviour or even acknowledges it. Neither does the book. It is something abusers do, I’m not sure how intentional it is but it does succeed in making the victim overlook the abuse they have just recieved out of the relief of getting an apology (again, personal experience). And honestly if she didn’t straight up die I don’t think Squirrelflight would have gotten an apology, Bramblestar probably would have remained abusive until she apologised to him (probably repeatedly). The fact that Bramblestar never addresses his behaviour implies that he has not learnt from the experience and so is prone to perform that behaviour again, especially as it has gone unchallenged (I don’t blame Squirrelflight at all for not challenging the behaviour by the way, that’s the effect it can have on people).

Why it is such a big problem

The biggest problem with this is the fact that this isn’t portrayed as red flags behaviour within the book itself. As an adult I can regonise the signs of abuse but a child may not be able to see how this is particularly wrong and may think of this as normal behaviour. It is not. Even though I have never experienced this abuse from a partner, I have experienced several of these abuse tactics (and some others) by someone in my life. This abuse is what I believe to have caused my anxiety to be so extreme. This abuse over the span of several years has lead my to become an adult who may trick themselves into thinking they are fine, but I can guarantee every two weeks or so I will have a full on breakdown for a period of several hours where I can barely function. It’s horrible. This form of abuse is serious with often permanent long lasting effects but in this book it is largely shrugged off. If this was a book aimed at adults then even though it is an issue, it might not be quite as big of an issue as it is. But this is a series aimed a children, an audience as, like I said, may be unable to tell the signs of abuse and instead perceive this as a normal relationship.

Bottom line is, Bramblestar is extremely absusive in this book and doesn’t do nearly enough to make up for his actions. I fully believe Squirrelflight should have gotten out of that relationship rather than back in it, their relationship is extremely unhealthy for Squirrelflight and the worst part is that the book does not address it as such.

In actuality I’ve grown up with this fandom, whether I’ve fallen or grown with this messy road of mlp. I’ll always treasure it as my childhood , sure i do wish I would’ve been able to be a part of the bigger cons and post analysis videos like other MLP:FIM people, but i think it was time for it to end.

Not completely happy with how it ends, but i think it’ll be okay. Btw, not changing my next gen, its staying how it is and my story is still a work in progress.

Squirrelpaw: a Summary

An abandoned art piece i made of the gods in this side story i was working on. Titled “the moon deities” or “moon gods” . Very symbolic of the yin-yang symbol but basically, one is of light and the other of the dark. Duskalin the more introverted and closed off one, and Vilightus the open and flashy of them.
