LAPORTE — A LaPorte man was seriously wounded by a gunshot Monday.
He was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend due to the severity of his injuries, police said.
According to LaPorte police, medics found him before 3 p.m. Monday lying face down behind a parked vehicle in his driveway on the city's southeast side.
A roommate was awakened by a gunshot and ran outside to see the victim, who had already called 911 on his phone, police said.
Police said a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun, along with a partial gun cleaning kit, were discovered near the victim.
There were 15 rounds in the magazine, police said.
LaPorte Police Chief of Detectives Tom Thate said based on all of the evidence gathered so far, the shooting appears to be an accident.

A man was found suffering from a non-lethal gunshot wound Monday in the 2100 block of Georgia Street, and police believe the shooting was self-inflicted.
Carlsbad police were called to the scene at about 12:45 p.m. by a passerby who reported Joe Campos, 25, was picked up by another vehicle, said Sgt. Ernie Mendoza.
Mendoza said the man was on his way to the hospital when police intervened at the corner of Sixth and Church streets.
Police called emergency personnel and Campos was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, and later flown to Lubbock for further treatment.
He was listed in stable condition, Mendoza said.
"Apparently, the subject was walking and the gun discharged," Mendoza said. "It was possibly self-inflicted."
Police said the shooting was likely accidental, and the man is not being charged for any crime tied to the incident.
Similar incident are rare in Carlsbad, Mendoza said, but he warned gun owners to exercise caution when carrying in public.
New Mexico state law allows for non-permitted open carry of firearms, but requires a license for concealed carry.
"It's unknown if he was messing with the gun, what caused it to go off," Mendoza said. "If you're going to carry, it's probably not safe to have one (bullet) in the chamber so you don't have to worry about incidents like this."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A 10-year-old Kansas City boy get his hands on a gun and shot himself in the leg early Friday morning, police have confirmed.

The rental property was undergoing renovations and should have been vacant, the property owners told police. They had a caretaker watching over the house, but couldn't reach them when they went to check on the property Friday morning.

The unknown person the boy saw in the home grabbed the gun and ran off the scene, per the police account. Police launched a search to track the unknown man down.

MOUNT DORA, Fla. - One person has been arrested and one person is being sought by police after a shooting in the parking lot of a Mount Dora Walmart in July.
Mount Dora police said that following a thorough investigation they issued a warrant for the arrest of Kederick Hunter, 20, and Gabriel Dejkunchorn, 20, in the shooting incident.
Dejkunchorn was shot in the knee. Police said a third man, identified as Christian Watson, was shot in the back.
Investigators determined all three men were in a car that was in the Walmart parking lot. Police said Watson was in the driver's seat, Hunter was in the front passenger seat and Dejkunchorn was in the back seat behind Watson.
Investigators determined there were no other people involved in this shooting and that Dejkunchorn was holding a gun when it went off, police said. He shot himself in the knee, and the bullet then penetrated the front seat and hit Watson in the back.
Police said Watson ran from the car to seek help. Hunter ran off after the shooting, but eventually came back to the scene and told investigators he wasn't there at the time of the shooting, police said. Dejkunchorn also claimed someone else shot them.
Only one shot was fired. Police said Watson will not be charged with anything.
Hunter and Dejkunchorn face one charge of false reporting during the commission of a crime. Police said Hunter was booked into the Lake County Jail.

Two Union Bridge men were arrested Friday after allegedly shooting an antique rifle with the wrong ammunition.
Mark Wayne Forsythe, 54, and Manley Gene Raver, 27, both of the 4600 block of Priestland Road, were both charged with one count each of illegal possession of ammunition. Both were held without bail but released on $500 after a Monday bail review, according to electronic court records.
According to electronic court records, Forsythe and Raver were also charged with possession of shotgun or rifle with a felony conviction, while Forsythe also had a charge of possession of a gun as a controlled dangerous substance. Those charges were entered as nolle prosequi, or abandoned by the state, Monday.
Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to Forsythe's residence after receiving a report of someone injured in a firearms accident. A deputy spoke with a woman who took him to the firearm, which was broken into two pieces, according to the statement of charges.
The woman told the deputy the rifle was very old and used for decoration and that she had warned Forsythe not to shoot it. The wrong type of ammunition was used in the rifle, causing it to explode, another deputy explained, according to the statement. The second deputy identified the gun as a 1914 Mauser rifle.
After checking with the Maryland Gun Center, the deputy learned that Forsythe was not allowed to possess a firearm or ammunition due to a felony conviction. The deputy spoke with Forsythe at Carroll Hospital, and after he was read his Miranda Rights, Forsythe told the deputy that he had shot the rifle after Raver had loaded it. He knew he was prohibited from possessing firearms, according to the statement.
The deputy later spoke with Raver, who said that he didn't try to shoot the rifle, but he was the one to carry it to the shooting location because Forsythe had difficulty walking. A check with the Maryland Gun Center revealed Raver is also prohibited from possessing guns due to a felony conviction, according to the statement.
Raver initially told the deputy that he didn't load the rifle but changed his answer to say that while he put the bullet in the chamber, he didn't close it. He also said he thought he was allowed to carry the firearm because it wasn't at his house, according to the statement.
While Raver finished a written statement, a woman came in and said that she had hidden the ammunition because she and the other woman didn't want the men to have the ammunition and be able to shoot the antique rifle. She gave the bullets back when Forsythe asked for them. A check with Maryland Gun Center revealed that the woman is also not allowed to possess ammunition or firearms due to having a final protective order against her, according to the statement.
A summons was issued for the woman, but she had not been arrested, as of 8 p.m. Monday.
Phone numbers were not listed for Forsythe or Raver. They are both scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 6.

In what authorities believe was an accident, a 16-year-old Athens boy died Wednesday after shooting himself in the head while listening to music in a friend’s car.
Tremell Barnett was sitting in the back seat of the car in front of his Hollow Ridge Drive home at about 4 p.m., when he began “bumping to the music” that was playing, according to a 21-year-old man who witnessed the shooting and identified himself to Athens-Clarke County police as a good friend of the victim.
“He got particularly into one song and produced a gun,” the friend reportedly told police.
The friend said he did not know Barnett was armed or how he obtained the weapon, police said.
“(Barnett) was really getting into the music and kept pointing (the gun) at his own head with his finger on the trigger when he shot himself,” the friend reportedly said to police.
The friend raced him to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where police already were waiting to help bring the victim into the emergency room.
Barnett apparently was still alive and then flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
Though in shock, the friend who witnessed the shooting remained consistent in telling what happened and there was no evidence to suggest foul play, according to police.
A younger boy believed to be the victim’s brother also apparently witnessed the shooting and would not immediately speak with police. Detectives hoped to get a statement from him later.
“Until the autopsy is conducted, we can’t completely say this was accidental, but at this time it is being worked as an accidental death,” said Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County police Department.

WILDWOOD – Officials said Thursday they are trying to determine if the July Fourth shooting death of a Wildwood man was an accident.
Nigel Williams, 23, was shot in his home on County Road 229-P just after midnight Tuesday and taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center where he died, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Lt. Jon Galvin, sheriff’s spokesman, said deputies believe drugs may have contributed to Williams shooting himself, but he wouldn’t elaborate on where he was shot.
Detectives have been unable to find the witnesses who were in the home at the time of the shooting. Galvin said they left after the shooting.
“We want to see what their versions are,” he said.
According to Galvin, at least one witness had a warrant out for his arrest and he believes others may have fled “out of fear.”
