I finished dresden recently and it was such a beautiful, emotional and devastating ride. This post is how I feel about it, it's not only a fanfiction to me, it really deserves so much appreciation.

When fanfiction is better than many published books

Aka, the small post I’ve been wanting to write about Shingeki no Kyojin fanfic “Dresden” by @hedera-helixwriteseruri 

Yes, small (well I fucking tried). I write essays but will try to keep this as straight to the point that I want to send across.

Although I assume there’s few people who like Eruri that don’t know this fic (and those who know but haven’t read yet, please), I actually want to recommend this to readers in general. Fans of other pairings, fans of other anime and manga, fans of reading. And the reason for this is in the title.

Dresden is an historical AU set in World War II. If you had absolutely no idea what Shingeki no Kyojin was, who Levi Erwin Isabel Farlan anyone else was, you’d experience this novel with the same pleasure - granted, probably not as much pleasure as a fan, because we get to see the wonderful in canon characterizations, but don’t let me digress. WWII stories are complicated and many people don’t like them, but when they are good, they’re memorable.

Finding an author that takes time and care to do research without spoon-feeding this information to the reader is hard to come by. To construct this complex story, to have these interactions between these characters, to write about such a dark and complicated time of Human History and to write about any form of war and the greyscale of human nature are all attributes I personally have to give praise to, and all examples portrayed in great quality of writing in Dresden. The descriptions in this, both surroundings, settings and most of all emotions and human interactions, are hard for me to put into words.

Yes, it’s a very long novel. Yes, it does feature romance between two men (and man, thank goodness it’s good romance. I’m sorry but I have to add this tiny really personal remark - this is good romance to me, a relationship that grows and evolves, starts off as strangers and rather complicated ones at that, rather than a *holy shit he’s hot I’ll ignore all common sense just cause wow I’m in love right now without knowing a single bit about this person wow* type of trope, thank fcking goodness for careful writing and in my opinion realism)  YES it’s fucking beautiful and emotionally draining and rewarding reading.

That’s what I wanted to say.

TL DR / So the whole point is to say: Dresden is an amazing novel, a memorable historical fiction book that’d be a wonderful read if you bought it from a bookstore and you’d LEARN STUFF too, history and writing skills alike.

 But that it also so happens to be a Shingeki no Kyojin fanfiction. Just our luck.

And you’ll hardly regret it if you invest your time reading. It’s wonderful.

With all the time travel shenanigans lately we still have not got an explanation for the first scene in the manga, despite these chapters having already been connected to the present day (to you, 2000 years from now, from you, 2000 years ago). Due to the structure of the final arc paralelling the first arc, I believe that the meaning of Mikasa’s words will be revealed in either the final chapter, or the penultimate chapters leading up to the final. In other words these are Mikasa’s first words to Eren in the manga, and they will also be her last. Because these are the words she’ll say to him right after she kills him.

First highlight is the change of “if”-suffix, second highlight is the addition of “go and/to”

(The change in wording from わかる wakaru to 理解する rikai suru in Hange’s words is minor, I would take both to mean understand here, although わかる would have a wider range of other meanings, likewise the change from こと koto to もの mono)

Hange’s words are an amalgamation of their own with the way that Erwin said it.

//Spoilers 136// Hi! What did you think of Levi's monologue? Did you see it as Levi moving forward by letting go of his revenge against Zeke, asserting that his choice to chose Armin was the good one and overcoming his survivor guilt? Or did you see it more as a farewell, a potential death flag, a sign that his role is over? Maybe something else? I'm a bit confused about this part so I'm looking for op thoughts!

It would be an understatement to say I loved it. Levi’s monologue was a reiteration of what I already knew, a clarification of things I’d suspected, and mostly just an affirmation of everything I love about Levi. 

 I’m going to take it panel by panel.

“Where is Zeke?  Where is he?  

“Must kill monke” has become a meme at this point so it’s no surprise that Levi is still hyper focused on Zeke. He opens his monologue with the thought that’s been in the forefront of his mind since RTS.

Even if I did find him, I’d just be a burden in this state.  Dammit… 

We get a look at the damage from the titan bite last chapter. Levi’s gear is mangled. His leg is as well. Levi is accepting that he can no longer fight. 

My interpretation of this is that Isayama is managing our expectations as well. We’ve been asking for 55 chapters whether or not Levi will kill the beast titan. This might be our answer. 

I’ve never bungled one of his orders, not even once.  And yet for some reason, his final order is the one that I just can’t….

What’s so interesting is that Erwin never ordered Levi to kill the beast titan. That was Levi’s own promise in reaction to Erwin’s sacrifice. Levi has internalized this order and made it a focus on his own. 

Interesting too, this is the first time Levi’s flashback hasn’t included Erwin’s smile. I think Levi’s disappointment in himself is coloring his memory here causing him to see Erwin as disappointed. 

Recognizing that he most likely can’t kill Zeke, Levi now reflects on the bigger picture.

Our role may have ended there, we got those brats to the sea.  If that was the extent of our role, tell me…

Finally we get clarification on why listening to Armin’s dream affected Levi so profoundly.  It’s connected to the mission of the Survey Corps.

The mission of the Survey Corps was very specific. In simplest terms, the Survey Corps was the military division in charge of the exploration and reclamation of human territory from Titan-infested lands. That mission was fulfilled when the titan threat was eradicated and the entire Island was deemed habitable. Levi is acknowledging that reaching the sea fulfilled the original Survey Corps mission.

Listening to Armin’s talk, even before the basement truths were discovered, Levi recognized that Armin’s mission extended beyond the Survey Corps. Armin was looking, not just past the walls, but into whatever existed beyond the territory they hoped to reclaim. Levi valued that.

When you guys devoted yourselves, was that in order to trample the hearts and lives of others?

After thinking about the original SC mission, Levi is now reflecting on how those ideals would translate into their modern predicament. Their mission was officially land reclamation, but they wore the wings of freedom in symbolism of that. He’s asking how far would they go to secure their land and their freedom from threats.

 No…when we dreamed of a world without Titans I’m pretty sure that was an absurdly innocent and idealized world, because if it wasn’t, it won’t have been worth what they devoted.  

Their world was small before the basement. They couldn’t have known about the threats beyond their small island, but if they did, Levi is confident that they would never have devoted themselves to it’s destruction. Levi is here reiterating that no one would support the genocide. Not Erwin. Not Mike. Not his squad. 

This acknowledgement is important to Levi in the face of his acceptance that he might not kill Zeke. Reaffirming that the original Survey Corps would’ve fought on the side of humanity, might help ease any guilt he might feel.

I know my friend @lostcauses-noregrets​ has answered dozens of asks about whether or not Levi would choose humanity over Zeke. I’ve entertained a few myself. We’ve stated over and over (and in her case, and over again) that Levi cares about humanity.  But understanding now how Levi believes he fulfilled his role when the kids reached the ocean makes it easy to see why he could focus on Zeke. It wasn’t that he didn’t care about humanity, obviously he did, but he viewed himself primarily as a member of the original survey corps. This was the last item on his to do list.

Reflecting now on how Erwin and the others would prioritize humanity is likely a comforting thought for Levi. He might not kill Zeke, but he can still honor those he loved by continuing to fight no matter what. Perhaps he grips his weapon in the panel that follows as an indication of his resolve.

Erwin, I didn’t pick you, and I have no regrets about that. About entrusting the future to that kid who had the same look in his eyes as you.

If I die of heartbreak, this is the line that does it. I’ve written elsewhere that Levi would not regret his decision to let Erwin rest because that decision was never about who was right, or better, or deserved it, or was more pure, or any of the ideas I’ve seen floating about these last 4.5 years. Levis made his decision based entirely on his own feelings for Erwin. He couldn’t drag Erwin back into the hell of their existence after Erwin had finally found peace. Levi let Erwin rest, confident that he could fulfill the remainder of Erwin’s mission. That’s not something Levi could regret.  Entrusting whatever comes next to “that kid who had the same look in his eyes as you” is as poetic as it gets. I almost can’t believe it’s Levi uttering those words. But Levi sees Erwin in Armin and that why he can entrust the future to him.

A little reflection

It has always been my stance that Levi never regretted letting Erwin go, and I am glad to see vindication of that thought this chapter. I wonder whether this in some way will bring back the serumbowl in all its confusion, especially the idea that this confirms that Levi chose Armin because he was the better man.

Personally I don’t feel that there is a contradiction, but rather, that it clears up the final piece of the puzzle. He could let Erwin rest, because there was someone he could entrust the vision of the Survey Corps to.

It was never that Erwin was less capable, rather, that he was pushing himself beyond his limit, and he couldn’t stop, because he had yet to justify the hearts whose sacrifice he had asked for. And the thing that enslaved him on this path, was the need to confirm his father’s theory. And the need to confirm his father’s theory, was in a way also the need to prove that his father’s death had not been in vain. The mountain of lives that he needed to make restitution for just kept getting bigger and bigger.

It was always a blessed relief to be told that he could stop.

Then there was the argument that Armin’s dream was better because it was “purer”. I would say that it simply didn’t have the baggage that Erwin’s had, although I also feel ironically that the purity of his dream became a curse in its way when the discrepancy with reality became apparent.

And so, Levi thinks that their own story may have ended there. In letting his liege rest, he also lost his liege’s vision, his remaining aim apparently only to clean up the nagging loose end on his side. Nevertheless, he continues to fight, because he too is a slave to doing all that he can while he can, and having put his trust in the vision of the next generation, he keeps on striving to help them bring it about.

He has done well, though sadly he is also his harshest critic, and always, I hope that if he meets his end, that someone would convey this to him the way he has conveyed it to so many before him, his liege among them.

Regarding Levi's choice during serumbowl

After chapter 84 there was this misconception that Levi's choice was a completely selfish one, that him allowing Erwin to rest meant that he had also doomed humanity. On the other hand, there was also another misconception, which surfaced again after chapter 136, that in the end Levi's thoughts led him to the conclusion that the only right choice for humanity was Armin. Well, the first idea contradicts the latest chapter and there's no proof for the second. Seeing it in black and white, I believe oversimplifies things and takes away the beauty of the moment.

To be honest, I still believe that the driving force for his decision was that he realized the fact that they couldn't be cruel to Erwin anymore, that he needed to rest. Let's remember chapter 84 and 85.

After saying that it was him who chose Armin and he was not forced by Eren and Mikasa, he quickly corrects himself and says that no, he rather chose Erwin to die there.

Furthermore, during chapter 84 when he was directly asked by Floch "why" he only chose to give the explanation as why they had to let Erwin rest.

There's also Isayama's interview but I think these two instances are enough to prove my point.

That being said, what made this choice at least easier(meaning he wouldn't betray humanity), is that the other "candidate" to receive the serum was SPECIFICALLY ARMIN. Yes Levi stated that Erwin was irreplaceable but he admitted that Armin also had unique qualities.

Despite the fact that Armin lacked self-confidence, he had proven his ability of getting them out of difficult situations and thinking quickly, observing things that others couldn't. Armin was indeed a kid who could be entrusted with humanity's future. He also carried that hope that the survey corps represented. I believe there's no point in arguing wether Erwin or Armin was the better choice. Erwin needed to be freed and rest at last and Levi was the only one who understood that because he saw his pain, and Armin was a kid who was capable to take this demanding role of being humanity's saviour. At least that's what Levi thought and he doesn't regret it.

Levi's choices with no regrets

**sobs** Levi doesn't regret his choice because at the same time he freed Erwin of being a demon, from his guilt and gave him peace while entrusting the future to a very capable kid, that has proven himself time and time again, whose eyes are like Erwin's. Erwin, humanity, the kids, his comrades all live in Levi's mind and he will not stop fighting.

I'm so emotional by Levi's monologue this chapter. It took us 84 years but it's finally here and all this time I knew it's going to break me. Levi is giving his all to humanity because that's what they always fought for. That's what his comrades devoted their hearts for. His comrades and their goals are still the center of his thoughts and no matter what happens he won't give up on honoring their sacrifice. That's grand, really grand. He's not regretting letting Erwin go and entrusting the duty to Armin because he knew he's going to be the savior of humanity.

It's just so emotional, for this is most likely a death flag for him and again I'm not at all ready for it; however, I'm just so glad we got to see another precious moment with all the veterans dreaming about a better world even though it was just in Levi's imagination. I also love how a special panel was dedicated to Levi's closest and most dear people aka Hanji and Erwin in his life. I still believe he deserves happiness and a life post-war. Idk what Isayama is planning. Levi's story might go everywhere but one thing I'm sure of is HE'S NEVER GONNA GIVE UP ON SAVING HUMANITY AND HONORING HIS DEAD COMRADES.
