He feels like the worst person to be asked this person, his past had been so steeped in a false sense of duty and destiny. “My purpose is to keep you safe, and under control.” Neji answered immediately, knowing it wasn’t what the other man wanted to hear.

Tilting his head back, he let outs a faint sigh. “ I don’t know if we have a set purpose, maybe those purposes change. Some are fulfilled and others then take its place.” Neji turned pale eyes on the Hokage, the man who was honestly part of his purpose at this time. “You probably never thought your purpose was to be Hokage, and I never thought my purpose would be to feed an army of dogs twice a day.”

"Oh? It's Hyuuga-kun, huh?" Grinning lopsidedly at his comrade who stands by the entrance of the quaint sushi place, he props an elbow on the bar counter and beckons him over. "Y'alone? Come, come. Keep me company for a bit. It's been a while, ne?"

"Arashi-san.” He greeted, dark eyebrows raised in mild surprise at the invitation.

Hesitating momentarily at the entrance of the restaurant, he finally finished his motion of pushing the curtain back and stepping through. Easily ignoring the gazes that rose to follow him after Arashi called out to him.

“Of course i’m alone.” Neji scolded, though it was somewhat jokingly. Taking a seat next to the older man he nodded along in agreement. “It surprising, considering we work rather well together. Unless you decided enough was enough and demanded to stop working with me.” 

Figuring it was with Arashi of all people - Neji waved over the owner and even ordered a cup of sake. At the very least he could trust the other anbu to watch his back and not tease him too much for having a rare drink. “What are you doing alone? You’re one who can find company rather easily.”

Somehow he always did end up with teammates far more social and easy going than him. That must either be a stroke of luck or the world making up for his own shortcomings.
