Every integral component of Addam’s story is a queer allegory.

His introduction is when he claims the dragon that belonged to an openly gay man. But Addam holds a lower social rank, and in order to belong to his new life and family, he must live a lie and pretend to be someone he is not. Addam then spends the next few months being metaphorically entrapped in the place that was built to contain dragons, and which ultimately hinders them. Though he does eventually escape, even if the circumstances are not ideal. Then Addam is next shown taking part in the one and only dragon battle of the war that was called a mating dance, and which gave the name to the very war itself. The mating dance involves the dragon belonging to another boy. For just a short moment, in flight upon a dragon, Addam is no longer hiding his true nature. The other dragon battle Addam fights in is against the dragon whose riders champion the oppressive power structures. Vermithor being Seasmoke’s father adds an extra sting to the situation. The father kills the son, just as Corlys’ control over Addam’s life ultimately led to his death. In the end, he was laid to rest by another boy, in a scene that is meant to evoke one of the canon gay relationships of the series. But Addam’s bones don’t stay where they are and instead his family gets him back to bury his remains as they see fit, because the patriarchal expectations placed on queer children will always triumph over their personal wishes.

They had lost a third of their number, and still the waste stretched before them, bleak and red and endless. The comet mocks my hopes, she thought, lifting her eyes to where it scored the sky. Have I crossed half the world and seen the birth of dragons only to die with them in this hard hot desert? She would not believe it.
