Astrid jumped back, startled by the person and skateboard coming at her at a high speed. “I’m fine,” she said, her voice a little shaky. “My ankles are also fine.” She smiled to show that she was okay, despite her heart pounding in her chest.
Adi jogged the rest of the way to the stranger she’d nearly killed, grimacing despite the response. “You sure? Board bruises can hurt like hell,” she asked anyway, leaning over to grab the longboard and glancing at her feet. “This sand always -” Adi cut herself off and sighed, hearing the shakiness in the girl’s voice. “Sorry for scaring you, I didn’t see you at first.”

nealpercz:
Neal stopped in the middle of his stroll from the bakery to check what seemed to be an interesting email, and soon discovered that he had been given an invitation to attend a fairly informal event regarding local foodies. As he was scrolling through the information and contemplating whether he should attend, he heard a familiar roll of skateboard wheels gliding bumpily over the sand spread scantily over the boardwalk, and he looked down as it lightly tapped the side of his shoes; he looked up in surprise, and there was a girl, with a look and questions of concern.
Tumblr media
Providing a reassuring smile, he waved a hand and shook his head, priming his answer, “You’re good. I’ve straight up smacked into someone” — someones — “with my body while riding my board, so I deserved to be hit anyway.”
Adi wasn’t sure if he’d react in time, or if he’d even see her, since his eyes were on the phone. She tripped and caught her bearings, walking slowly to where her board had landed. As she picked up her board, she caught onto his words, chuckling at the comment. “Nah that's no reason to get your ankle cracked - I mean, I’ve knocked into people, so...” she trailed off with a laugh. “If it’s some karmic shit, at least you’re off now?” Adi’s lips twitched into a smile, making light of it. “Better this than texting and walking into a bus? But -you didn’t stop before you full on bodied someone? That sucks.”

“Is it really that obvious I haven’t smoked from a bong before?” Naura didn’t have a problem with marijuana; she’s smoked a couple joints with friends at parties before but she was never one to dabble further into it. Richard Linklater was casting for the female lead in this new movie of his and Naura wanted to consider herself somewhat a method actress. Which is why she enlisted help. “Why is it better than smoking it from a joint?”
Tumblr media
Adi hummed and turned the glass piece in her hand, wondering for a second if she should pretend she was some expert. “Honestly? I don’t know,” she shrugged and let out a laugh, flicking her lighter distractedly. “It’s what my roomie used in art school, so it’s what I’ve always used since.” Adi didn’t smoke that often, but when she did, she stuck with what she knew. “Something about the water and the smoke and your lungs, bla bla...” she waved her hand in the air, obviously not recalling most of the reason. “It’s easier to feel it yourself than explain it...”

When she asked if she was holding him up, Callan anxiously replayed his words and actions in his head and tried to see if he came off rude. “Oh, no, I’m sorry. You’re not holding me up.” He was a little nervous talking to a stranger about a topic she clearly knew more about, but he really had nowhere else to go. He told her the title of the comic. “No, this is her only series—at least, her only series that’s been printed. She has a big online following so she may have more works there.”
Adi hated awkward conversations, and she didn’t want to be the jerk that couldn’t take a hint - so she was relieved by his response. “You’re good, just...y’know,” she waved vaguely, reaching in her phone for her pocket. “Cool...” she nodded as she typed out the title on her phone, adding it to a list she had. “She does webcomics?” Adi’s interest piqued even more at that, and she made a mental note to look up the artist’s other work. “I’ve followed some artists that started online, the transition’s fun to see. So - are you more of a lit person, if you don’t read comics that much?”

camilabeaumont:
Camila thought about this for a moment. She was trying to collect as many things as she could, so maybe she could get the Funko and then continue looking for the figurines she wanted. “You might be right… Uh, I didn’t do a lot of research. The moment I saw them, I knew I needed them but I didn’t really… Google this properly.” She sighed. “You did? If you still have it, I totally want it! I love Gir.”
Tumblr media
Adi nodded slowly, a soft smile on her face. “That’s cool - people do that all the time, every shop has something different.” She chucked at her enthusiasm. “They could’ve sold it since then but maybe they have it still. I think I saw it in a case, so it’s probably more than the floor Funko, but...” Adi trailed off, gesturing for the girl to follow her. She stopped at a glass case with more Funko boxes, with prices that ranged in the twenties and up. “I swear I saw it a couple weeks ago..” she started, scanning the case before pointing at one of the boxes behind some other figure. “There’s your Gir!” Adi squinted at the price, looking back at her companion. “It’s thirty bucks? Is that less than it was online?”

“Magical realism,” he repeated. “Yeah, that’s a good way to describe it.” He probably used that phrase in the article he wrote, but he couldn’t remember. He went on to describe very briefly what the series about. “—I recommend it, if you want to try out an indie title.” He glanced around to see if there was anything else he should look at while he was there.”
Adi nodded when he confirmed her question, and she listened carefully to his description. It actually sounded pretty interesting, unlike some of the suggestions she got from randos in the shop. “Sounds good - I’ll check it out. I like a lot of indie stuff, so,” Adi smiled and gestured to the book, “Uh - what’s it called? Do they have any other books out?” She followed his gaze curiously, unsure if he was looking for another comic or looking for an out from the conversation. “If I’m holding you up...”

Adi was on her way home after a long shift, her eyes on the verge of bleeding after printing out someone’s poorly designed business cards. She was speeding along the sidewalk, just a bit too fast for the amount of sand on the concrete. By the time she saw the person in her way, it was too late. She skidded to a stop, her board sliding out and rolling until it landed somewhere at their feet. “Shit- my bad. Are you okay? Did I hit your ankles?”

The other girl’s presence was a welcoming difference to the reception she received from the jerk that had now scampered off back into the corner he came from. “Yeah, I forget how territorial people can be over these things. With the current trend of superhero films and stuff like that, I guess I should know better” She had dealt with guys like that at work but there was just no getting used to it. “Oh, yes please. I feel like I’m gonna get swallowed up in here” Rory nodded enthusiastically when she offered to help her out. “Okay, let’s see…” Rory muttered as her eyes skimmed over the list written in her brother’s handwriting. “I’ll start with the toys—he said he wants a POP figure? He says that I should surprise him with the choice but I no idea what they are” She huffed. “I am way out of my depth here”
Tumblr media
“They’re like dogs marking their property, it’s gross. You’d think they’d want to get people into it, instead of scaring them off. Not your fault.” Adi shrugged it off and shook her head. It can be a lot but once you get used to it, it’s easier to get through the sea of stuff. Except sometimes the owner decides to move shit and the aisles are full of books and boxes, but that’s only once a year or something,” Adi laughed at her own half joke and listened carefully, watching as she read from what she assumed was a checklist of things she had to look for. “Sounds like Funko Pop - they’re like action figures but they’re all in the same style,” she explained, walking off toward the figures and gesturing for her to follow. “They’ve got a ton here, these aren’t even all of them, there’s more in the back. Honestly you can find something from most shows and movies out right now, depending on what he likes?” She stopped at the shelf of boxed figures and narrowed her eyes in thought, chuckling not unkindly at that. “So was I the first time I walked a place like this. But don’t stress, you’ve got a guide. Uh - what shows or movies does he like? We can probably dig something up for him in here.”

“Oh I’m sure it would be, but  I’d rather warm my self  up for the big stuff rather than just jump in the deep end. Slow and steady, ya know? Yeah I’ve noticed that. The way they drew some of the female superheroes were just…hmmm, super questionable.” Aditi nodded along as the conversation went on. “He is, maybe too smart at times,” Aditi said with another chuckle. “Oh yes, it’s a lot like that! Someone just needs to shake their head disapprovingly at you and say ‘no. only one wish’. I kid, but that’s a good power though. I may steal that and say it next time he asks. Or I could add in fire power just for the hell of it. Wouldn’t you be scared if you saw me 50 feet in the air throwing fireballs around?” She didn’t know about the other girl, but Aditi was having a lot of fun with this conversation. “Instead of the vodka aunt, I rather be the flying fire aunt. That’s my mutant alter ego.”
Tumblr media
“Smart. Diving in and trying to read that much at a time is a lot. It’s good to start small and work your way up,” Adi agreed with an awkward laugh. “Yeah - it’s not that much better but it’s something. That’s why I like some of the smaller indie books, though - more of ‘em are written by people that aren’t gross.” Her lips quirked at the comment on her nephew, the fondness for him making her smile. “People say that about the best kids though,” she joked, laughing harder at the playful disapproval. “You’re probably right, I’ve gotten away with it for too long,” Addi sighed, like it was some big burden. “Try it out, see what he says - he might tell you you’re cheating, but...” she trailed off, a hard laugh at the mental picture of the woman barreling toward her with fire. “Yeah that’d scare the shit out of me - you wouldn’t even have to fly, but that combo? Unstoppable.” Adriela shook her head, “There you go, you’ve already got an alter ego and your powers picked out. You’re learning fast. I bet your nephew’ll be impressed. He’ll ask to join your hero team and everything.” Adi egged her on, “What would your mutant name be?”

“Phew,” Aditi said wiping the fake sweat of her brow. “I feel like with these long series, you’d have to be into them from a young age otherwise there’s a huge chance of losing pace or interest. I could be wrong though.” Following her through the aisles, Aditi patiently listened as they spoke, even though she had no clue about these things and couldn’t ask detailed questions about well anything, Aditi at least wanted to try and understand the comics lifestyle. “I think I’ll be using this book more than him,” she said with a light laugh. Quickly flipping through pages of the book, Aditi nodded approvingly. “Looks good and is easy to follow, it’s a yes from me.” Though Aditi’s intention was to just browse today and buy another time, the book she currently held was something she didn’t want to miss out on. “That’s exactly what I told him, like if your car broke down and you needed to go somewhere, just fly!” It was logical and made completely sense to her. “But you know what his reply was? He said my dad can drop me off, he’s such a cheeky kid,” she added with a shake of her head. “Oh, now that’s a fancy power. You’ll get a taste of every power, andif superpowers were real, you’d be super powerful.”
Tumblr media
Adi nodded carefully, not wanting to completely shut her down. “It can be fun to read the old stuff to catch up I think-like playing old video games. But you’re right, it takes forever unless you focus on just one series - and some of them are just shitty to read these days if you don’t have any nostalgia for them. Old comics weren’t really progressive,” she twisted her lips and continued, laughing lightly at the confession. “Well, that’s good, you’ll have a lot to talk with him about,” Adi encouraged, watching with a grin as she flipped through the book. She tried to hide some of the satisfaction on her face when it looked like she might take it, but it was plain to see as she continued. “He sounds like a smart kid, not putting himself in any boxes - I can see his point,” Adi nodded, a faux serious look on her face before she broke into a chuckle. “It’s kind of the ‘ask for endless wishes’ cheat of mutant powers, but I like it. As long as you can control all of it and don’t get power hungry...” she trailed off, not about to talk the girl’s ear off with what she’d do with an imaginary power. “I think your flying’s a good power, but maybe you can find something fun in here to change it up, see what your nephew thinks of a new one? Or an idea for a mutant alter ego. Either way I I bet you’ll be the cool aunt for reading up on it for him.”

This girl sounded awfully snobbish for having offered help and Naura held back a sneer that dared paint her lips. “Look,” she started pointedly, then she mentally took a step back and reprocessed her words. “Oh. Oh, nonononono, that’s not what I mean. I mean,” she chuckled softly with an apologetic grin. “I’m auditioning for this role and shamefully I must tell you as I am standing here in this shop I don’t know a single thing about teenage mutant characters except for the X-Men. And I know they’re not the only ones that exist out there. My knowledge is woefully limited.”
Tumblr media
Adi’s brow jumped at the pointed ‘look’, unsure of where the conversation was about to go. The tension in her shoulders fell with the girl’s laugh, and she slowly nodded as she explained herself. “Hey, there’s no shame in that,” she responded, waving the admission off. “Nobody’s born knowing everything - and how can you be converted if you don't start somewhere?” Adi joked, her eyes roaming around the store. “X-Men is a good place to start. You’ve got all your basic mutants there, what most of this era is based on.  You can check out the New Mutants, too - they’re basically teenage X-Men,” she gestured for the girl to follow as she walked a couple aisles over. “There’s also Generation X - which I haven’t read yet, but you’ve got more teen mutants there.” Adi gestured to another area, where the newer indie comics were. “Those might help you get started with - you said you’re auditioning for something, right? Research?”

“Oh, I don’t know! I was on my way to get a churro and then I saw this place and remembered that I had seen something about people selling Invader Zim stuff so I decided to get my churro later and come check out the store! If you can order it, that would be super cool! For some reason every time I try to get it on Amazon, it’s out of stock! I don’t remember Invader Zim beng this popular before…“
Tumblr media
“Well they’ve got some stuff - probably the Funko figures and some comics, but...” Adi knew all about the original series, but she couldn’t say she was an expert on the collectibles. “If they’re sold out on Amazon, maybe it’s something you have to special order?” she glanced around with a frown, trying to remember if she’d ever seen anything in the locked cases. “Maybe it’s nostalgia? Some of this stuff gets so expensive - people our age probably started collecting for it. But...the Funko are newer so if you’re not looking for the rare stuff maybe you can get one of those? I think I saw a Gir here the other day...”

He nodded in agreement. “Yeah, she’s talented.” He idly flipped the book over and then back to the front. “Uh, I’ve only read the first three issues and I enjoyed it. I’m not a big comic book reader though. The world the writer created is very normal with just a little bit of fantasy thrown in.”
“Oh...what’s it about?” Adi glanced at the cover again, trying to get a read on the title. She didn’t always trust strangers’ taste in comics, but it never hurt to check out a new series. “Hm...like magical realism?” Adi grinned at the admission, an encouraging gesture. “If you usually don’t read comics that might be a good sign, “ she added, with a light laugh. “You don’t always get good art and a good story.”

fkaramona:
There aren’t many things that Rory wouldn’t do for her brother and that included going to a comic book store in search of items he had requested she get for him. Rory had some free time from work and went to visit her little-but-not-so-little brother Oscar after her mum told her that he caught a bug going around his school. In an attempt to brighten him up, Rory paid a visit to the comic book store to get the novels he had asked her for. She had made the mistake of asking a disgruntled man who she mistook for someone who worked there who then went one a tirade about how vague the titles listed on Oscar’s list were. It was another girl who had come to her rescue and shooed away the man while she bit her tongue. “Yeah, actually. My little brother wanted a few things from here but I’m not really sure where to start looking…” Her eyes flittered over the numerous shelves and racks around them. “…thanks for that by the way, I didn’t realise there were laws to a comic book store”
Tumblr media
Adi rolled her eyes at the comment, the gesture directed at the jerk in the corner. “No problem, they pull that shit all the time when the owner’s not out front,” she replied, playing it down with a shrug. “Nah, there aren’t any laws. You don’t need to know anything to be here, some assholes just like to feel important.” She waved it off and followed the stranger’s gaze, trying to see if their eyes settled anywhere specific. “Well if you want some help finding what he’s looking for?” she started, with a friendly smile. “They’ve got books, some board games, figures, posters, cards...I can point you in the right direction if you know what you’re looking for?”

“You’re joking. you’re telling me there’s not only 51 issues but also multiple universes in that series? Amazing. How can anyone keep up with it?” Aditi’s head was spinning already. It’s a wonder how invested people are in comics, Aditi would’ve lost interest ages ago. “A big yes for the early stages! That way I can keep up with it too. I heard him mention X-Men a lot, like he keeps asking me what mutant powers I’d have… apparently flying is too simple.” Aditi said with an eye roll. “Off- topic..oh no actually it’s in topic, what would your super power be?”
Tumblr media
“Don’t worry, not every series is that far - or complicated,” she explained, with a friendly laugh. “Some people just read the universe they like, or start with the newer stuff. Or just read indie comics with short runs - which is more fun sometimes.” Adi grinned and nodded, trying to remember where the X-Men comics would be in the shop. “I read some of the older stuff for those - but if you want a crash course, they’ve got the X-Men Grand Design. It’s like the timeline breakdown of the whole universe. He might like those? And you could learn about the universe, too...” Adi inched toward the aisle, pointing to the first book. “There’s also a series he might like - The Movement - it’s a smaller run about this group that has powers and fights injustice together..” she trailed off  as she looked for the right shelf and chuckled at the comment about flying. “It’s only too simple if you don’t think big - it can be the perfect power when you want to go places - and see things you wouldn’t get to see without it,” Adi paused, a mischievous look on her face. “I always cheat and say I’d want to absorb or copy powers. Like Rogue, but without knocking out anyone I touch. It’s useless without other people with powers, though.”

riverolssen:
Honestly, River had no idea how he’d missed the comic book store until that afternoon. Sure, comics weren’t really his thing, but the store itself should have been enough to catch his eye before the one time he’d set out to have a productive day. He’d printed off a bunch of resumes even though he was sure places just wanted them over email these days, and had set about getting a more steady income—even a retail job would have been good. Instead, he’d stumbled across the store and stepped inside, and he’d quickly forgotten about his pile of papers, which also contained things like bank statements and the receipt for the repair his favourite guitar was currently undergoing. Without it, he probably wouldn’t be able to pick it up from the shop. He wasn’t one to get frantic, but if he didn’t find them… “Umm… yeah…” he mumbled trailing off. Truth be told if the guy had been trying to insult him, River hadn’t understood it (probably much to the other’s delight, but he didn’t really care). “Not to buy though. I put my things down and I don’t remember where..” he explained, before turning to look at the person offering their help. “Hi!” He added, his signature friendly smile. “Do you work here? I’ll buy something if you can please help me find them,” he said, never mind the fact that all his money was tied up in the aforementioned repair anyway.
Tumblr media
The longer she watched the stranger’s reaction to the situation, the more concerned Adi got. She’d had her run ins with jerks in her time, but he seemed really worked up. Adi watched him with concern as he trailed off, and she nodded when he started to explain that he’d lost something. “Oh...where- ah,” Adi cut herself off before she could ask where he left them last - that could be one of the most aggravating questions when she’d lost something. “Hi,” she replied mid-thought, trying not to laugh at the obvious afterthought. “Nah I don’t work here, but I can help you - and you don’t have to buy anything.” Adi furrowed her brows and hitched her bag over her shoulder, ready to help. “Did you bring your things in here? And...if I know what we’re looking for maybe they’ll be easier to find? What’re you looking for, exactly? A bag? Your wallet?” she added, glancing around the store with no real idea what she was looking out for.

kelseydrvke:
The moment she entered the comic book store, Kelsey felt a bit out of her element. Video games? She loved and could talk about them for hours. Comic books? There wasn’t much she knew about them and, truthfully, she wasn’t all that interested. The moment she was approached by a stranger, spewing comic book facts like she had asked for the Wikipedia article on it, Kelsey couldn’t help but roll her eyes. Before the pink haired girl could say anything, another came into the picture — and God, Kelsey was glad they had. A scoff escaped her as she watched the annoying guy scurry away, putting the comic book back on the shelf. She was completely lost so she was more than glad to accept the help that was offered to her. “Actually, yeah. A friend of mine adores comic books and I’m not really comic book savvy to choose a good one. I know he likes The Walking Dead video games and I know there are comic books on them too,” Kelsey began, sure she was about to say some stupid thing, “so, I was wondering if there was some sort of special edition that I could get? Otherwise, I’m completely open to suggestions.”
Tumblr media
Adi was encouraged by the scoff, and she eyed the comic for a moment as it was slid back into place. “Yeah, there’s a comic series on them - do you know if he’s read ‘em yet?” Her eyes roamed around the store, trying to remember where the series was. “To be honest, I don’t know a lot about their rare editions, but most comics have some kind of limited runs you could find,” she started, squinting as she thought and pointed across the shop. “They’re over there! I’m not sure they’d carry the rare ones here, though. We could ask? Really rare stuff can run you in the hundred dollars range, though,” Adi wasn’t sure what their price range was, but she wasn’t about to casually suggest spending that much. “If he’s into collectibles, they’ve got figures for the series here - if he already has the comics. You think he’d like one of those?”
