Okay but genuinely, why did The Star call The Vampire King "dad" but our Marcy doesn't call Simon "dad"? Like, that's just really interesting to me?
#fionna and cake#adventure time#marceline#did the vampire king ask her to?#did simon tell her not to?#is it because she never met her bio dad in vampworld?

Adventure Time meant so much to me when I was little.
Not to make things Political, but I was a weird little sapphic girl, and seeing such competent female characters in this show? Seeing female characters who were allowed to do bad things and be forgiven for them without being demonized? Seeing some of them be allowed to fall in love with other women??? That was actually so important for me during my childhood.
#adventure time#this is about bonnie and marcy mostly#because those two had the most impact on me#and were the resident sapphics#but theyre far from the only female characters in this show#who were allowed to be competent#and who were allowed to make mistakes#without being demonized#or held to higher standards than the male characters

I know Marceline never met Betty as a kid, honestly she probably still put Betty up on a pedestal as a kid and wished so badly that she was around cause simon spoke so highly of her and surely things would be better if she were there, right?
Thinking about Simon slowly losing his sanity. Slipping away more as time goes on, wearing the crown to protect Marcy but then accidentally hurting her when under its control, starting to pull back for fear of hurting her more, starting to think about leaving, and Marcy just desperately wishing Betty was there, cause Marcy knows that she'd be able to make simon happy, and Marcy knows she'd be real nice and fun to be around for Marcy too, and her actual mom thought she was a monster, but Simon trusts Betty, so Marcy knows Betty wouldn't. Surely she'd manage to make everything better.
I wonder how Marceline felt about actual Betty one thousand years later. It's a shame they never got to really interact.

I honestly adore how much kindness and forgiveness this show lends its characters.
Like, yeah, bad people exist. There are selfish people in the world who will hurt other people for their own gain and who will never ever feel bad about it or try to change. And those people don't deserve the time of day, frankly.
But sometimes people are hurt, or scared, or not in their right mind, or don't know right from wrong. Sometimes people do bad things without being irredeemably bad people. Sometimes people can- and do- get better when they have the chance to, because sometimes hurt and scared and confused people who hurt others just need to be shown kindness and given room to grow.
This show manages to hit that balance so well of showing people who don't care about other people and don't want to vs showing people who have done bad things but ultimately want to do better. It hits the balance so well of showing that people don't change unless they want to and that some people just don't want to vs showing that when given the chance most people want to be good and will grow and change if you let them.
I just love Adventure Time so much man.
#adventure time#this is about fern and marcy and bonnie and honestly everyone else#because all our main characters fuck up#and do bad things#because they were hurt or scared or confused#but they all cared enough to want to do the right thing#and they were treated kindly by the narrative for their willingness to do good

The thing that really gets me about Simon and Betty is that they could have worked things out.
Sure, Betty was always too self sacrificing, and Simon didn't pay enough attention to notice, but they loved each other. Simon never wanted to hurt Betty and Betty was only sacrificing in small ways at first. They were clearly happy together, and if things started really getting bad,
In canon, they didn't have a chance to. Not with the crown and the mushroom war and everything. They were put under severe constant stress and trauma. Their minds were cracked by outside forces. There wasn't anything they could do, really, to work things out in a healthy way.
But if it weren't for the crown or the war? I mean, they were both adults. They were both mature. They loved each other. This isn't one of those relationships that was doomed to fail from the start, neither of them went into it entirely healthy, but two stable thirty+ year old adults with multiple degrees between them can absolutely figure out some healthy coping strategies and maybe get to a therapist. They could've been fine. They could've been happy.
Yeah, half of the tragedy is the foundational cracks in their personal dynamics, but the other half is that most of the pain they both went through and put each other through was out of their control; that they could have worked (should have worked, would have worked) in another world if only the world itself had been kind enough to give them a chance.

I guess the thing I don't like about people portraying Betty as the Ultimate Victim as well is that it detracts from how incredibly proactive she is.
Like, she doesn't always (or usually) make healthy choices, but she always makes her own choices. Regardless of what anyone says. Regardless of what Simon says. Regardless of what literal cosmic entities say.
She chose to stay with Simon, she chose to jump through the portal, she chose not to give up even when Simon wanted to die, she chose to chase her research into magic, she chose to summon a literal chaos entity and then fuse with it. These were all her own choices! Not good for her, but still her decisions.
Betty is one of the most proactive characters in this show, and while she was clearly not in a healthy mindset and her story was deeply tragic for the most part, I don't think we should let that detract from the fact that she was a character who did things and actively made her own decisions instead of being dragged around by someone else or by fate.
