Project 2: Scale Shift - This was a group project between myself and two others. We initially started off with the concept design of simple tentacles, which morphed into an anonymous sea creature crawling on its side. This was a challenging material to work with, and working with a group can pose difficulties, but the overall result was pretty satisfying.

Project 2 - “Scale Shift” - Part #1 - The initial design of this miniature clay model was designed heavily based upon my the design and movement of my stabile, as seen in the first photo. I then did some sketching of more fully realized designs, trying to keep my stabile in mind while doing so.  Design 1 (blades of grass):This design was heavily based upon the movement associated with my original stabile. While I enjoyed the motion of the piece, I felt the actual shape of the pieces was stagnant to a point. This conclusion led me to my next two, more creative designs.
Design 2 (swords): The second design was playing off of the sharp angles that my stabile possesses. The rigidity of the piece led me to think of things like swords. Additionally, I found it interesting to explore the idea of something traditionally sharp and dangerous being transformed into something soft.
Design 3 (tentacles): The final design that I was most intrigued by was a more organic tentacle-esque piece, again based on the general motion of my stabile. To reflect the same emotion that my cardboard sculpture had, I felt that implementing the original colors (black, orange, yellow, green, blue) was the smartest option. This along with the fluidity of the form drew me to this design the most.
Following the third design was a more detailed sketch of the hypothetical inflatable, followed by both a sketch and final sculpture of the design that shows context in location.

Stabiles - “Nostalgia” - This piece was made from the shrunken shapes of Elmo’s pattern pieces. I titled it “Nostalgia” because I chose to cut the shapes from an old shoebox that my mom mailed me some nice things in from home. I decided to implement some playful, expressive line work in fun bright colors in an attempt to express my nostalgic emotions for home and my family. I also decided to leave certain pieces black in order to provide contrast of shapes against lines and color. Because it is necessary to work from every angle, the creative process of this piece took a bit of reworking throughout.

Project 1: “Soft Sculpture” - This project began with choosing a stuffed animal, and then essentially skinning it and tracing its pattern pieces out. I then had to decide what kind of soft sculpture to create out of Elmo’s various pieces. My initial thought was to have Elmo committing some kind of sin, because I found it dark yet also sort of morbidly funny, so that’s what I went with. I decided on gluttony in order to reflect our nation’s habit of overindulgence in every sense of the word. The piece ended up with the title “I’m Stuffed”.

Mini Assignment #1, “Happy Birthday”
The progress of this wearable was actually quite simple and fun. Much of the creative process in the beginning consisted of actually collecting the natural materials around campus, (and probably looking suspicious while doing it). From there, it was arranging, hot gluing, and testing (hence the late night photo of me in the middle of the process in my dorm). The photo on the white background displays the final piece.
