Been thinking about how the new Superman movie did a really good job of giving Clark interests beyond “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” He likes pop punk rock. His favorite meal is breakfast for dinner. Clark does a little dance when he gets the front cover byline. He likes to doom-scroll. Unclear if he’s a dog guy. His girlfriend makes him hot cocoa when he’s sad. So often Superman in film has zero personality beyond tortured alien that must guide humanity. Giving him these small details made the character feel so much more real. He really is just a guy doing his best.

Is that a super-powered villain played by Nathan Fillion?? I almost scared to watch it now due to how strongly Captain Hammer got into my heart 😨 /hj
hahaha, oh no, not quite!! although you'd be forgiven for thinking that 😂💖 Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner, and he's a superhero—specifically a Green Lantern!! 💚💚
Tumblr media
the lore is that 'Green Lantern' is a name applying to a whole host of superheroes, including those who are members of the Green Lantern Corps, a kind of intergalactic peacekeeping org!! every Green Lantern wears a 'power ring' which gives them incredible powers, and with the green one, it's usually physical constructs made of light/energy (as you can see Guy so artfully summoning here 😂).
but the fun thing about Guy is that he's universally considered the worst. he's arrogant, he's loud, and he is absolutely in love with himself 🙈 honestly he's such a funny character and he was amazing in every scene!!! please go and watch Superman, it's so so good and i have no doubt you'll walk away with at least one new blorbo 😉

"Maybe I'll kill that reporter who does all your interviews. Maybe I'll kill Clark Kent."
This is the most important line in the movie. I'm 100% serious. It tells you everything you need to know about Lex Luthor's character. It shows the audience that, despite being almost omnicognizant from the get-go, Luthor clearly has no fucking idea who Superman is, only what he does.
I've never seen anyone go from All-Knowing Evil to Absolute Fucking Loser so fast. In fifteen words he went from unstoppable criminal powerhouse to flailing manchild moron. He gave his Evil Dictator demonstration and then turned around, dropped his pants and showed his entire ass. He proclaimed his manifesto of unrelenting ego, turned around, slipped on a banana peel and landed on a whoopie cushion.
And he was so mired in his own sense of superiority that he never even knew it.
Lex Luthor, folks. Ten out of ten, no notes.

Erase the idea that a woman is no longer free after having a child. Erase the idea that a woman is no longer capable of chasing her dreams after having a child. Erase the idea that a woman will lose her beauty after having a child. Erase the idea that a teen mom’s life is ruined after having a child. Erase the idea that single mothers can’t be independent after having a child.
Erase the idea that children are a woman’s biggest enemy.

I see this headline:

As a former cakewrecks lover, I figured sure, I’ll bite. Let’s see this cake. Literally nothing could have prepared me for this cake.
They paid $49 for this “frog-themed” cake and honestly no amount of money in the world could be put on this masterpiece:

just saw the new Superman and yknow what I keep thinking about?.. when he’s fighting Luthor’s diversion in Metropolis, Clark is making every effort to isolate it to a relatively open space (the park). damages are at a minimum. but that takes time, it’s not efficient enough, so then the corporate-funded Justice Gang shows up - and oops, suddenly buildings are being swept off their foundations, civilians in direct line of fire, the city core is getting ripped apart. he’s scrambling to save children, squirrels, people caught in the red zone while the others are more interested in punching the big monster. the story makes it absolutely clear that corporations don’t care about life or harm reduction, and in a world in which superheroes are already normalized, this kindness is what sets Superman apart

Vague Superman spoilers ahead but what does it say about movies lately that I was genuinely surprised that they beat the bad guys without some big catch or sacrifice. Like sure there little things and emotional ramifications but at the end of the day they won.
Lex even tried to do the whole “force the hero to make an impossible choice” thing and it didn’t work because Superman asked his friends for help!
Anyway I’m just obsessed with the theme of “Good can win. It may be hard and it may seem hopeless at times but with love and friendship and a radical determination to save as many people as you possibly can, good can win.”

I absolutely adore how normal Clark's parents looked so normal. I realize the ideal of them is a strong farmer and his wife and that might be a beautiful older woman and her sturdy handsome husband. Nothing wrong with that. But Martha and Jonathan Kent in this movie were the kind of older couple I'd see at the grocery store in my own small-town. The kind of people at the community hall and auction grounds picking up hay bales for the cattle.
They were warm and just so normal it almost surprises you. They also don't resemble Clark at all which I think is important in driving home the fact that they aren't his biological parents. He stands out amongst them it's so clear he's different and special even. And my god do they love him.
The way they call for him and sit on a rusty bench outside the creaky screen door. That feels like home to me having grown up on the prairies. How authentic they feel only grounds Clark even more. It feels less like a dream or idea of a perfect farm family and is more two people who tried their best and will bake apple pie with calloused hands full of love

This Superman is such a sweetie. He’s kind to the robots. He makes his girlfriend breakfast for dinner. He pretends he doesn’t care what social media thinks of him but gets genuinely upset over juvenile name calling. He tortured a despot with a cactus but the spines “weren’t that big.” He tries to capture the giant monster alive. He loves people and does his best to help them and he’s not an idiot he knows people are complicated, but he’s genuinely heartbroken when they turn on him. The idea of him having a harem is utterly ridiculous. He loses it over a pain-in-the-ass dog. He makes fun of the despot for pissing his pants. He wept at seeing an innocent man murdered. His open devastation over Mali’s murder is part of what brings Metamorpho to take the risk of helping him. He saves that weird baby. He saves a squirrel. He not only would not fuck his clone, he killed him. He makes that shithead Lex cry. His flirting with Lois is so swagless and unsubtle that her boss immediately clocks that they’re together. He loves his parents. He’s good all the way down, not because he was born that way but because he chooses to be.

Violence set to happy music will never get old to me. Blood splattering to an 80s pop song is like a sister to me because I'm not allergic to fun.

James Gunn’s thesis statement for his Superman is simple and effective: "Be good. Do good. Be human despite the bad things. That is the most punk rock thing in a world so stoic and cynical."
And that’s how it should be. That’s beautiful, the new Superman movie is beautiful.

Something I really loved in the new Superman that I haven’t seen anyone mention:
When that building is falling down over the bridge, Superman is saving one woman in a car. Usually in superhero movies or TV procedurals with emergency services, if it’s a woman in a car she also has a child or a crying baby to “raise the stakes” and make you care. But for this Superman, and in the context of this movie, it’s enough to just be a woman alone in a shitty car that won’t start right. She doesn’t need to be a mother for the stakes to be high enough that Superman uses his body to stop an entire skyscraper.
It was small, but it felt really powerful to me the moment I saw it.
